The Complicated Mess of FrSky ACCESS and FrSky R9
#46
I also wrote into Frsky to see what they say, I guess Oscar beat me to it. I agree with Snow, for $20 and I have to pay shipping, then it is not worth it. Even though shipping would probably be about $7 for me.

I'm pretty unhappy about this mess around the ACCESS protocol. I bought the Horus X10 less than a year ago and if I understand it correctly this radio doesn't support the new ACCESS protocol. I thought that such new "flagship" radio would be compatible with this new protocol. So this trade in makes no sense for me Sad

Unlike with the other transmitters, at least with the Horus you can buy an upgrade ISRM board which then makes it compatible with the ACCESS protocol, although it will cost you $80 + shipping for the privilege...

I am in the same boat. I have the Horus X10S. They already screwed me with the USB C charging port debacle. Now this. At least there is fix. But $80 for the ACCESS board and another $40 for the R9M 2019 module. I am going to wait this out.

Yes it's quite unfair even the upgrade kit option is just a sugar coating... Moreover I really afraid that Frsky will make the old protocol obsolete totally in the near future and we won't have other option than buy a new radio or do the upgrade if it possible as new features and receivers will require ACCESS. I don't know if it's true or not but but rumour has it Frsky did it because of the Jumper T16 which is pathetic. I'm also waiting for the outcome but I'm a bit (quite) sceptical. Maybe my next radio gear won't be Frsky...

I am thinking the same. Abandon Frsky if old firmware is no longer accessible.

I wonder if Frsky will end up like DYS..... I definitely won't be giving them any business.

I'm an aging Spektrum user (both myself and my transmitter are aging Big Grin ). I recently purchased the X9-lite and the R9M Lite module (and Rx - all ACCESS). I'm still waiting for both to arrive. I may not have ordered these had I known about all of this ahead of time, but I may be what FRSKY are most interested in - a new user who wanted to get into the FRSKY world at a reasonable cost. It may bite me down the road, but I mainly did it to get the benefits of 900mHz cheaply. I'm not planning on switching my entire fleet from Spektrum, but for when I want 900mHz, I'll use this. Just thought I'd offer this as another perspective...

Did you get the original X9-Lite of the new X9-Lite Pro / S?

Only the Pro and S are ACCESS compatible. Also, there were initial reports when the X9-Lite Pro / S came out that the R9M Lite module wasn't compatible with them and was one of the reasons being touted as to why FrSky also brought out a new R9M Lite Pro module. It's possible that those compatibility issues may have now been addressed but I would need to go back and take a look to be sure. Either way, it's a whole load more confusion, even for new users of the kit.

I love the FrSky transmitters. I really wish they hadn't done down this rocky path.

Must not be the original then, but it is also not the Pro or S?  It says it will do ACCESS and ACCST D16.  I'll be p**sed if it doesn't.

It's this one: https://www.banggood.com/FrSky-Taranis-X...house=GWTR

(And the module I got was the R9M Lite Pro - I understood the main difference to be maximum power output.) . I guess I'll see when it all arrives.....

I also ordered the R9M 2019 combo with the receiver, still waiting for it to arrive. I'm planning to use the flex firmware since I'm in Europe and and don't want to mess with the 900mhz but still getting the multiple output power with telemetry included. I'm just hoping that FrSky doesn't abandon the development on these platforms. Alternatives are good but not like this.

Sorry, my bad. I confused the X-Lite with X9-Lite. Too many similar names. That one should really be called the X9D-Lite. So what you ordered is fine and fully compatible with all the ACCESS stuff.

Just so you know, when using FLEX firmware in EU mode (868MHz), you lose the ability to select the full 1W power output that FCC mode (915MHz) offers. EU mode restricts you to a max output power of 500mW for some reason. Not that it really matters unless you intend to do proper long range stuff.

Thanks Snow. No problem with the 500mW, I'm not that confident for the proper long range stuff Smile
My XSRs fall a little short on range. Maybe it's the antenna position, or something else, but even on my 500meters and below radius, I get RSSI low warnings. I think the R9M will give me the reliability I need on my typical flying range. Of course if, later, I get a proper VTX with the power output to go for a full killometer or more with solid image, I'll give it a try Wink
