For those that are still in the Frsky ecosystem, Frsky has released a new premium radio Horus X20. I am not going into all the details, you can read it for yourself. But some keys features.

- both 2.4ghz and 900mhz transmission. Can work simultaneously with compatible Tandem receiver.
- Color touchscreen
- Ethos OS (not OpenTX)
- wireless audio Bluetooth.
- HD video receiver to the screen (not sure what is the source of the HD transmission). Looks like just HDMI with 0 latency.

But no OpenTX? Is Ethos OS a closed source OS meaning the manufacturer controls what features we get and what we don’t?

Yes, Ethos OS is closed source and is controlled by FrSky like FrOS is. There are some more details in the threads linked to below. The controller looks a bit like a QX7 form factor with a screen slapped on the top and a few hundred dollars added to the price tag.

Well isn’t that grand. Another system with zero support from frsky. Until they can support their products I will not buy anymore. I’ve got 3 receivers left and once they are used up I will be changing to something else. From what I can tell from their own website the entire gimble is no longer cnc. It has cnc metal face plate.

That is true that Ethos is closed. But OpenTX developers also control what features you get. Although OpenTX is open source, how many of us really write code for OpenTX and add the features we need. In Frsky defense, FrOS (OS on Horus X10) is surprising easy to use. It was powerful enough that I decided not to load OpenTX. The one thing that it lack was Lua Script and Crossfire support.

If the goal of Ethos is to make a power programmable OS but make it easy to use, then they will gain some fan. There are other hobby that uses this radio, not just FPV. Let's face it, OpenTX, in all its glory, is not the most friendliest to use.

I agree OpenTX is not the best but at the least we have a platform via github to request features, report bugs and provide feedback. Furthermore the hobbyist community will keep it alive or we will move to the next best thing.

I only own an FrSKY radio (they did make good radios) but the backward incompatibility introduced by the various protocols, the pricing (compared to other OpenTX radios available today) and the recent attempts to lock users and vendors into their proprietary OS/hardware (no Crossfire or LUA support) is not anyone can prove or advocate as a positive move.

Dual band is a nice feature but they don’t spec the TX output on 900MHz.  Probably is 25mw like the Jeti..... 

Really good looking radio, but difficult to switch as I am so deeply invested in crossfire and older ACCST D16/D8 protocols. I think most of us are in the same situation.

With the current popularity of the AIO boards and small whoops that use the D8 protocol, FR Sky's own actions seem to be the biggest obstacle to their success with the Horus or any other radio they bring to market. They have really painted themselves into a corner and generated a lot of ill will. But if they capitulate to the reality of the market they will just look like spoiled children. I am very new to the hobby and already I go out of my way to avoid anything to do with the company. One of the members here even uses the signature, I HATE FR SKY! That kind of wide spread sentiment (if it is widespread) is going to be hard to overcome for a product that will probably cost three to four times what the market expects (and can buy) for a good receiver. The YouTube personalities also openly question the relevance of FR Sky. FR Sky has a lot of work to do and an updated model of an old design isn't going to be enough.

You are correct. Switching is difficult. But not impossible. When I moved to Crossfire, I actually didn't switch my existing quads over. I just put Crossfire on new ones. I just keep the old radio for the old quads. But why would anyone even switch when the competition is doing a better job (eg Crossfire vs R9M). But I have to admit, the Horus line are well made radios.

No doubt if Frsky did not pull all these moves to lock down their ecosystem, then they could be selling much more radios. Although I am not happy with what they did, I can see why they did it. They are pulling an Apple type move.

It looks like a couple of people we know in the community have managed to get their hands on one of the new FrSky Tandem X20 transmitters  

Looks like professional quality.

I am still skeptical about external module support for Crossfire/ExpressLRS/Multiprotocol.

There was news on rcgroups that IRC was working with FrSky to get their Ghost module supported but I am not sure if that’s finalized yet.

Another interesting thing for me would be the HD video function people have been talking about.
