The Complicated Mess of FrSky ACCESS and FrSky R9
#1
What a complete shambles FrSky have made of all this, along with the BS naming conventions they use for their kit & firmware which just causes even more confusion. Someone at FrSky needs to be fired.

It seems that if you are using the R9 system and you want continued support and firmware updates going forward, then you are likely going to have to buy both a new radio (one that supports the new ACCESS protocol) and also one of the new R9 modules that is capable of supporting the ACCESS protocol, which is either the R9M Lite, or the R9M 2019 edition. While both of these modules support the ACCESS protocol, with that protocol installed, neither can run that protocol if fitted to non-ACCESS transmitter. It is unlikely that FrSky will further develop the non-ACCESS firmware for the R9 system so if you want to benefit from future R9 improvements and you have an ACCST transmitter and/or one of the older R9M (non 2019) modules, then you are going to have to upgrade all of your transmitter kit. If you want to know the technical details then watch Pawel's videos below.

Although I hate to say it, right now Crossfire is starting to look more and more like a better and more economically friendly option in the long run, and people would probably now be better advised to go down that route than become a victim of the spaghetti mess that FrSky have created with the compatibility minefield of different transmitters, modules, and firmwares you have now have to contend with and get your head around. Trappy must be rubbing his hands in glee knowing that FrSky have royally shot themselves in the foot with all of this.

My thought: This is a continuation of the Jumper T16 issue. FrSky was really upset that the Jumper T16 runs OpenTX (or a fork of it). By design, open source software is supposed to run on ANY compatible hardware, but FrSky seemed to think that OpenTX was theirs. Now, consider this: does the original R9 module work in a Jumper T16 radio? If it does, then you have your answer. FrSky simply changes the "link" between their new modules (R9 or anything else) and the radio transmitter. Basically, they changed the bay in their new radios so that new modules will only work in new FrSky radios, period. Simple, that cuts out any radio with a compatible bay for the modules including, but not limited to, the Jumper T16. I would presume that any future modules whether R9 or something else will have the new bay link and only work in FrSky products. Yes, FrSky has really made a mess of things. Looks like my long range gear will be Crossfire.

yea, from what i've seen, they tend to release whatever they develope the day before, and doesn't spend enough time testing them properly, hence the frequency patches/fixes and the confusing amount of different firmware...
I want to support them more because of my long love for the Taranis, but it's really frustrating sometimes - I feel they treat their customers like guinea pigs, who spend money to beta test the new products for them.
Right now I am at a crossroads - continue with Frsky's new system and hope things will get better, or invest more in Crossfire which I already have the Micro TX module, but the receivers are very expensive and I have so many models...

Frsky has became a bully. Maybe a good time to jump ship. I have the pre-2019 R9M, which I got free with my radio. I can still jump ship without much lost. Crossfire is looking pretty good.

I wonder if anyone can write an open source firmware for the R9M module.

I have a feeling they'd sue anyone who attempt to do this Big Grin

ACCST (D8 and D16) are still theirs, even if OpenTX is the real power behind the throne. But it's not like China cares.

On the plus side: the fact that FrSky are now behaving like Poop means that I feel less guilty about looking at Crossfire. I mean, TBS are also Poop , but their protocol is better.

The ground is for dead people.

What are the radio chipsets used for ACCST and ACCESS?

Multi-protocol module is already using D16 ASSCT. Frsky seems to have left them alone.

I also have an R9M module (the pre "2019" version) and an R9MM (the pre "OTA" version) which I got in the FrSky promotional sale last year for a bargain bucket price so I didn't pay a lot for it. Even though I don't do long or mid range, it has always been my plan to move onto a 900MHz (868MHz in Europe) control system purely for the extra security and reliability factor to give additional peace of mind when flying.

After all these shenanigans with ACCESS and the compatibility issues with old and new equipment working together I'm now seriously considering moving to Crossfire instead which I will be able to use with my existing X9D+ (pre "2019" version), and which I have some confidence (at least more than I do with FrSky) that TBS won't shaft me a year two down the line like FrSky are doing to their existing customer base. Thankfully I only have a couple of quads, so from a receiver perspective I wouldn't have many receiver to replace if I was to jump ship to TBS.

I am pissed after buying all the R9 gear and a few months later frsky tell you your old equipment won’t work with the new software you have to buy it all again , I will not be doing that , I will keep my old taranis and get xfire up yours shit sky

LOL @ Frsky.

I think they will backtrack. When the Xlite Pro released, it seemed it was going to be ACCESS only ... and there were no ACCESS receivers at the time LOL. The internet went bonkers (I may or may not have been a participant in that bonking). Our only recourse to keeping the Xlite Pro from becoming a super expensive paper weight was to use a MPM so we can at least use ACCST to fly something. OpenTX obliged with the 2.3 nightlies. No sooner does the ominous "Ashley" from Frsky start posting up news of ACCST firmware.

I'm pretty sure they'll backtrack lol.

If what Pawel said is true then it's too late for that and they won't simply be able to backtrack because the dependency is down to the hardware design which is already manufactured and on sale with retailers. So it's not simply just a case of just changing or enabling stuff in the firmware like they could with ACCST backwards compatibility in the ACCESS firmware. If they were to backtrack with a hardware redesign (which I very much doubt they will) then they will create an even bigger mess by alienating the people who already bought the new "2019" versions. So it looks like they already committed themselves and headed down a dangerous path with no easy way back.

Now Drone Mesh is also pi***d at FrSky about the X9D+ "2019" edition. You can watch his rant about it at 3:06 in the video below...

To what he said in the video, I have non of the flashing issues he talked about, I flashed mine and it's working as expected. But yea, D8 is not supported, but with the Crazyboard you could bind with D16 and turn off Telemetry so it wouldn't lock up.
