Skyzone SKY04X OLED Goggles
#31
Dodgy   I was hoping not to own this video. I'll have to ask Skyzone for a raise. Wait! I'm paying THEM for this!!

So I christen a new YT channel with Skyzone's video! Here it is ...

You'll note that the video starts with the case screws already removed. It does show a good technique to get the clips to release - open the goggles leading from the back side. The video is somewhat like a cooking show - in the first 10 seconds they've already taken the goggles apart! I'm not sure if the tech just yanked the ribbon cable unplugged, but that detail is glossed over. The fan replacement is well illustrated.

Great work! This hobby is all about fixing ain't it. I'll probably share my first impressions on the 04x in a couple days since I'm so busy right now. Or perhaps a full review after a week of testing...or both Smile

eeeeeeee...mmmmmm Thinking yyeeeeeaaaaaaahhh, but doesn't the credo go "you bought it, YOU broke it, you fix it"? Have we streamlined this to "You bought, you fix it!"??! Tongue
Does that count as my 1st build? Big Grin

I'm still using the old sky01 goggles that I basically got for free so (even though I upgraded it with a comfortable faceplate, a fan and a DVR) I was thinking it's about time I invested in something better.

There's a good deal for these sky04x on Banggood right now so I almost hit the Buy button, but this thread makes me doubt it's worth all the money  Huh

Actually I want to punch myself now because there was a great deal for a sky03o on a local second-hand website last week. It just bothered me that it only supports 4:3 images while I'm flying 16:9 right now, but I forgot I can reconfigure all my cameras to use 4:3 so that shouldn't have been a dealbreaker Dodgy

It sucks that the module bay on the sky04x has bad compatibility, but I think it's even more crazy to buy a Fat Shark where you must spend extra €€€ on a module.

Not sure what to get now. Off course anything would be better than a sky01, but I still want to get my money's worth. Maybe I should just wait for the next Fat Shark with integrated Shark Byte 2.0 or something like that? Big Grin Whistling

I also came from SKY01s. My first impression was WOW! The image is just mind blowing (especially when stepping up from SKY01s). I'm a 16:9 FPVer. I had a problem with a noisy fan, but Skyzone sent me a replacement and it was very easy to replace. Having not been a user of external Rx modules, the external module fit is not an issue to me. IMO the Steadyview module works fine. If you get a discount from the $499USD street price, they're a bargain. Great screens. Good Rx diversity module. All for a really good price.

They are on sale at Banggood for US$ 453 https://banggood.app.link/b3I1vV0RTcb

Initially they were around the US$ 499 price which along with a vrx module made it an attractive offer.

However, not many online shops are carrying it. None of the local Australian shops are carrying it here either. This is unusual to me as such an awaited product (aka the Fatshark killer) would hit Australian shops in a couple of weeks from launch.

I posted the Fusion module issue in the TBS Lounge since they were selling the o4X on their store and Trappy’s response was that he knew and there was nothing they could do about it. Soon after their shop listing for the Skyzone o4X is out of stock.

And i have posted comments on several youtube reviews regarding the module bay issue and apart from Gal Kremer, no one else responded.

I guess its not doing as well as the hype created by youtube reviewers.

But it is still good value for money for the oled screen’s, better dvr, included vrx module and a much modern menu.

They are great goggles. I got mine for $425 and it was a steal. IMO the steady-view receiver is on par with rapidfire and fusion so doesn't really make much sense to want to use a third party module other than maybe the screen. Read my Skyzone Sky04x First Impressions thread for my experience. I might also post a new thread of my 1 month review.

$425 is definitely a steal.

Based on the video comparisons seen online, the bundled vrx module is definitely on par with high priced analog modules in terms of video quality.

Besides there is not much point investing in high end analog modules now that the dynamic is changing towards digital systems.

And for whoops or light toothpick size builds there is not much video range with built-in vtx’s on the AIO boards.

Not sure how well it handles multi-path but even my RF looses sync with my mob6 when running RF mode 1.

Fusion is different because of the ecosystem they are developing around XF and TBS cloud. Apart from dynamic vtx power and channel/band switching (great features) but not enough for me to buy another module.

Thanks for all the replies! I just hit that Buy button - byebye €€€, hello perfect analog image! Cool

From what I read, this goggle should be the nearly the best, apart from more expensive HDO2's or Orqa's paired with top of the line modules. If any of the shortcomings really bother me I can still sell them on eBay, probably without much (if any) loss.

I'll definitely leave some feedback here when I get them and have done a few flights.

(28-Nov-2020, 02:07 AM)Santiago Wrote: Newer isn't always better. Breath a sigh of relief, because you still have the best goggles from Skyzone. Thankfully I have the 03Os too, to fall back on. Id have lost my mind if these 04x were my only goggles... Anyway, below are my initial thoughts on the 04X goggles (which I copied here, with minor edits, from the blog comment where I first wrote them.)

After a great year with the SKY03O, I just received my black 04X. The goggles are super bulky/chunky, awkwardly big at module areas, and the fit is not good. The wide face plate on the 03O feels like a tailored fit, while on the 04X it is sloppy, and too wide at the edges, the narrow plate too small. Wide plate fit is okay at center of face, outward, until the area just outside both eyes, where it quits hugging, the contact pressure fades away, and the fit just loses contact out off the side of my face, making them feel insecure when worn. The receiver module I received is not usable, suffering from a massive color and frame glitch, then progressing to a downshifted, continuous right to left rolling frame. This happens after a minute or so of clear video, the glitch lasts about 30 seconds, then returns to clear video for a minute or so before repeating the cycle. Switch to 03O goggles and everything is great. I got a fusion module to try to make the 04X usable and there is not a chance it will fit (this was not mentioned anywhere prior to purchasing.) The bay is too small top to bottom, and the pins are at least 3-4mm out of alignment. The relocated 04X power button is small, and has been made flush with the goggle housing, so finding it by feel is difficult, making it fiddly to operate (at least for now.) The plastic housin lots of rough/not clean edges, and a lower quality overall fit and finish compared to 03O, and there’s a small, random Philips screw sticking out slightly, installed at a crooked angle, upward into the “ceiling” of the 3rd party module bay.. With the focus adjust, you lose the ability to put a flat/zero diopter over the lenses for protection. The flat diopter in the 03O is easy to wipe clean, and can be replaced if they get worn, where the 04X has nearly half spherical lenses that are difficult to completely clean, and seem to be much softer plastic than the diopters in the 03O. The IPD and the focus adjustments shift/get bumped/or jiggled slightly out of position during regular use/handling of the goggles, often requiring small readjustments each time I pull them down onto my face. These seriously are not good in their current form, mine in particular are literally unusable since the module doesn't work right. I can’t even comment on the bigger field of view because i haven’t gotten to use them properly. I can’t believe Skyzone had Eachine build the 04X for them. Seriously though, the wide, sloppy fit, and cheap finish of the 04X feels very much like my Eachine EV200D which were meh (and cost $300 and lasted 35 days before a screen failed.) I struggle to understand how these are the new “gold standard,” in goggles, unless mine are just an outlier. So far, I 've seen more to suggest they are basically public beta. I didn't' know Skyzone did that, or Id have waited. Maybe I got a particularly bad pair.

Note: This review was originally a comment I made on a blog post. I just copied it to here to get the discussion going, start/add to public record of first hand experience (that can potentially balance out the biased reviews done by paid to praise influencers,) and so that people considering spending $500 like I did, can be a little more informed before they make a decision. In their current form, I wouldn't pay more than $100, actually, I just wouldn't by them at all. With the buggy unusable receiver module, they aren't worth more than the materials which comprise them.

I have reached out to Skyzone about the receiver module a couple days ago. The bulk of my oberservations have been made since then,as I wait for a reply, so they weren't included in the initial request for support.

I read your message before I purchased 04X after selling my beloved 03O’s. Mine came with the never firmware and I didn’t have that rolling frame or color shift problems. But, everything you mentioned were unfortunately true. I can’t describe the problems better myself. The fit is the most annoying one. They made the strap shorter, it’s not usable for me so I had to change it. I can’t understand why they changed an already great fitting goggles and made it worse. I am very disappointed I can’t even enjoy the new features.

Fits me great...the only issue I have with mine are the extremely extremely extremely small paint chips which mess with my OCD lol (don't actually have OCD don't take me too seriously). If you have screen rolling or syncing issues just switch to diversity for that camera until Skyzone gives us better firmware.

Fit is different for everyone, sorry about your experience. You tried both face plates?

Got my SKY04X last week and here are my personal impressions:

Manufacturing quality: I got the grey version and it kinda looks like the color has been sprayed on, so you get some imperfections in the seams between plastic parts. I don't care all that much since goggles MUST be pimped with stickers, but still it doesn't give the best first impression.

Fit, comfort: I chose the narrow face plate since it has the same shape as my SKY01 goggles (which I had modded with an EV200D faceplate). I don't like the foam nor the fake leather padding that came with the 04X so I'm actually using the URUAV lycra fabric sponge pad made for the EV200D faceplate. You can simply stick it on the thin velcro, and it's easy to clean. The head strap seems nice but like others said it's a little too short, so I've ordered the Ethix strap and I'm using the (narrow) strap from my SKY01 for now, which actually isn't bad at all. So yeah, out of the box the comfort of the goggles isn't great in my opinion, but with some creativity you can easily improve it.

Display: The image is just fantastic; super sharp, great colors and great contrast. There's really nothing left to desire.

FOV: The FOV is very large and the corners of the screen were not perfectly visible when using the 4:3 aspect ratio. But I switched to the 16:9 aspect ratio since I was used to it, and now there's only a tiny bit of blur in the outer corners, which in practice is no problem at all.

IPD, focus: I had a bit of difficulty to find the best IPD and focus with the sliders, it's pretty fiddly and I might put some tape over them to keep them in place. When checking all the menus and options for the first time I got a bit of a headache after a while because it's hard to force your eyes to focus on the "nearby" OSD image. I don't know if this would be the same with other goggles; my old SKY01 goggles don't have any OSD at all. Luckily when actually flying I was relieved that my vision seems to focus on the environment "beyond" the screen and it was totally fine. Still it does make me wonder if box goggles like the Skyzone Cobra are (literally) easier on the eyes.

HDMI: Since the winter weather sucks I tried to use the goggles with the Liftoff simulator, but it seems my mediocre graphics card has a bit of latency on the HDMI output. Only when I unplugged my main screen and changed the display resolution to 720p the latency seemed to disappear. I was hoping that using the goggles would give me a fun realistic experience but I don't know, I still prefer my normal display to play Liftoff. Is there anyone who does enjoy using the goggles with a simulator?

Power: These goggles are twice as power hungry as my old ones, and it turns out the 2S battery pack I made out of some aged 18650 Li-Ion cells from an old laptop really doesn't like the increased current draw. So until I get a pair of fresh 18650's I'm just running it off a large 3S LiPo in my pocket.

OSD menu: I had more trouble figuring out the menu controls than I expected, but it turns out to be very practical. There are lots of good options and adjustment possibilities, but I'm not sure if the battery monitoring and automatic DVR recording actually work like they should. Need to do some more testing.

SteadyView: I can't comment much on this yet because I only had some short distance test flights lately. At one of my favourite flying spots there's a corner behind some trees that would give me lots of static and rolling images with the SKY01 so I can't wait for the weather to improve and try it out with the new goggles. In any case I didn't have any weird issues with incompatible cams; the Runcam Phoenix 2, Foxeer T-Rex and Caddx Tarsier work great.

So yeah, all in all these goggles have a few shortcomings, but the amazing picture quality makes up for all of it, and that's simply what counts most to me Cool

I did some testing of the automatic DVR and it works great; once the goggles start receiving a video feed they beep once and start recording. It doesn't stop when the signal disappears so in some cases you may want to stop the recording yourself. The DVR also saved the day when my Gecko crashed into a large puddle in a field. After replaying the footage I had a much better idea of the crash location and it didn't take too long to find the kwad back.

The power draw of the goggles isn't as bad as I initially thought; I've made a new 2S pack out of some flat Li-Ion cells I got from a Lenovo T440s laptop, and this 1800 mAh pack could keep it running for almost two hours. I'm a little disappointed that the battery monitoring of the goggles does not give out any warnings though, because I ran a this pack down to 2.7 V per cell and at that point the VRX just stopped working...

After a few more flights I can now confirm that there are no issues with the focus of the screen, the image is great and it all feels very immersive. The SteadyView module also seems to be doing a great job, so all in all I'm very happy with these goggles!

Bruce also seems to be a big fan:

Automatic DVR recording upon receiving video signal is an awesome function.

I wish my HD02’s did something similar.

The simplest of functions make the user experience all that better.

Cannot wait to receive mine. They are scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday and will be replacing my beloved Attitude V4's. Will be interesting to see how well they stack up to my experiences with HDO2's that I have tried. The picture difference always been WOW inspiring.
