Skyzone SKY04X OLED Goggles
#16
Thanks for the detailed response santiago. I agree john.

My current goggles are the recon v3's which are actually pretty compact compared to most other box goggles. They are also very well built. I mainly want to upgrade for diversity, resolution, and form factor. I think I will wait and see how mine turn out.

Good luck on your situation, hopefully Skyzone redeems you.

Hey Santiago, in JB’s stream he said something about a firmware release to help with screen rolling. Apparently there were some compatibility issues with some cameras. Sadly it isn’t a complete fix because it’s just switching from fusion to diversity. Might wanna check it out though,

Also if you don’t mind, do you have any pictures or videos available?

I also want a definitive answer to the supposed issue with other modules like the ImmersionRC RapidFIRE and TBS Fusion apparently not fitting the Skyzone SKY04X or Eachine EV300O goggles, because there seems to be some confusion and/or misinformation going on somewhere...

Yes. I would like that as well. I have specifically emailed Daniel at Skyzone, and followed on the Skyzone FB page (I HATE FB). Still, to date, I consider that there has not been a clear response. Daniel wrote to me that the Fusion module would fit but the RF did not. Seems odd if they both adhere to a common standard.

I see you found the Thingiverse link to the Skyzone made RF cover. I don't know how much care they took to print one, but from the picture on their FB page, Yesh! Looks like crap!

I'm ecstatic about the image (coming from SKY01s). The larger image makes my flying easier. I can see clearly now ... I would agree with the comments that IPD/focus need some locking mechanism (so that once set they don't change on you while handling the goggles).

I'm disappointed with the fan on mine. I posted a video on their FB page showing how noisy the fan is (not just air displacement; sounds like a shaver!). After being asked to remove the cover - to check for something loose - I posted a 2nd video showing the same issue even without the cover. I am emailing support to complain.

"...Daniel wrote to me that the Fusion module would fit but the RF did not."

That is far more descriptive, and accurate. I usually think of it as a single module, but I did upgrade the RF board, so yes, it really is two, and the RF is way too big. One thing though, this doesn't speak to how far out of alignment the pin sockets are, even if you get the Fusion in the bay. I suppose it's just a technicality though since the module simply isn't usable in these goggles. Why make it have module bays, if only the skyzone module fits? I am fortunate to have great vision too, so the adjustable focus/ipd is nothing but an annoyance that comes at the cost of losing the replaceable protection of the blank diopter. Lose/lose.. I really wish these were SKY04Os (an incrementally updated 03O,) instead of 04X.

The reseller is involved in my support inquiry since a few days ago, and still no response from Skyzone. In comparison, this is some of the poorest [non] support I received in some time, and I'm not interestedf in waiting further. How long will they take to correct this, if they take weeks for just the initial response? I have requested a refund. I really dont know that Ill bother with the effort of posting video at this point either. The incompatibility is verified right from Skyzone, so if people still don't believe it, they can spend their own $500 and see for themselves first hand.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, and the info from your contact at Skyzone. Glad to hear you agree about the focus/ipd adjustments too. For any person with good eyesight, the adjustments shifting out of position all the time is just undue torture.

Good (hopefully) news my skyzone's are coming in a couple days!!
I'll check back in after I use them.

There seems to be quite a few complaints about the Skyzone SKY04X goggles on the Skyzone FPV Facebook group. Noisy fan, freezing picture image, and of course complaints that pretty much none of the 3rd party modules fit the goggle module bay. Hopefully some of the things that aren't hardware related can be fixed with firmware updates.

I'm happy to help if and when I can. I find it challenging to keep the several 'threads', from different sources, in sync. I also find it frustrating that the information that is conveyed by Skyzone is, all too often, lacking in details, confusing, or misleading (even if not intentionally). I'd attribute it to overworked staff members, that are fielding too many issues at once, and a language barrier adding to their challenge. The initial customers, many of whom appear well versed in the subject, are often contributing information to others based on their experiences. I was the vocal FB member to post a video of my 'noisy' fan. There's a replacement fan on the way. I have yet to see the replacement instructions. My concern is that the installation procedure causes the fan body to be damaged (which is how the root cause of the problem was described). I have not had any freezing image, yet. That would be frustrating. It was presented as an issue with specific 'cameras'. I have not seen any specific 'cameras' at issue listed. Skyzone posted a firmware update. Whether that problem is fixed by the FW update remains to be seen. When a user asked if the FW HAD to be updated, the answer was no. So I didn't update. No problem that a potential FW update could fix (or break something else).

That said, coming from a SKY01, I am ecstatic about the image in these goggles. It's still analog, but the image is so much bigger! Helps this old man think his FPV skills have improved. :-)

I am aware of one person updating all available firmware (module, goggles, dvr,) and the screen rolling is not fixed. It seems they are going to need people to report to them with which cameras the receiver module is having trouble. I'm not interested in paying SZ $500 for the privilege of working for them. I have over 30 quads, and the very first one I tried does not work, and that particular camera is also my favorite out of nearly every name brand nano camera made, accounting for 1/3 of the fleet. Maybe they will issue the fixes quickly, but not likely from what I'm currently seeing.

There is a pile of evidence which qualifies any purchase of the SKY04X as, "significantly, 'not as described,'" thus qualifying them for chargeback through Paypal, and/or the issuer of the credit card that was used. In my case, this is both. Paypal requires that I pay the return shipping though, while my card issuer covers these costs. Thankfully I didn't have to invoke anything more than the mention of this fact to the reseller, who, after taking the Skyzone approach by going silent for nearly a week, quickly issued a return label for the goggles.

If I didn't have experience with the truly superb 03O's, I can see that I possibly would hang on to them, despite all the trouble, simply by not knowing better. The fact that I have a better alternative in my hands changes everything. An RCG user has gone through effort of summing up the comparison between the two as follows, and I am mostly in agreement:

"Sky04X Advantages

Bigger screens / FOV. The difference isn't just noticeable, it is like oh wow these are HUGE. I never found the screens in the 03o to be too small but this is a very big step up, feeling like you're twice as close to the screens.
Modular bay to swap out the receivers. The reception in the included SteadyView / RapidMix module is, ech alright, so I can see people wanting to swap it for a Rapidfire. I'll also list this as a disadvantage. The module holes are small and I can't fit my PRO58 in them even after cutting the circuit board to make it in the opening. The SteadyView module lists itself as V1.2 on the PCB where RapidMix are V1.1 so they're not exactly identical to the Eachine.
Quadversity! This might be a better feature if the receiver modules were better, but I am certainly not going to drop $80 on another lackluster module.
The scrollwheel get a double mention. It is so much easier to navigate the menus / DVR replay with the wheels instead of the buttons.

Wow that's all the advantages I can think of? Geez you'd expect more for $100 more than a SKY03o

Sky03o Advantages

   Weigh 15% less
   Cost 20% less
   Use 10-15% less power
Don't suddenly turn themselves off with no warning. This has happened 3 tines now on the 04X and I know it _can_ beep to warn you, it just has only done that once and prefers to just turn off. I switched from a 2S to 3S 18650 because of this, since there seems to be a limit around 6.5-6.7V where it just will turn off (with voltmeter calibrated).
The lenses are big enough to see the whole screens. The 04X lenses are slightly too small so I always have the corners of the screen cut off. The only way around this is to use them without the foam which is uncomfortable as heck so I just gotta live with picking which part of the screen I want to see per-eye.
The screens seem to have a greater dynamic range. I never messed with the image settings on the 03o since it looked good right out of the box, but the 04X screens have a tendency to blow out brighter areas into just white blobs and I've spent a ton of time in the menus messing with brightness, contrast and OLED luminance trying to bring out the detail without losing all the detail in the shadows.
The buttons are actually labeled. Not sure why Skyzone said "eh, two buttons two wheels, you flippin' figure it out" but they opted to put it in the 04X manual instead of on the goggles.
Has a camera. I mean who wouldn't want a camera versus no camera? I only turn this on by mistake. I've tried walking 10ft with the camera a few times instead of raising my goggle and I did not feel like it was the safest way to navigate.

Overall I'd say the reception is maybe slightly better with the SteadyView than the 03o, at least when it comes to sensitivity. The 04X seem to flash brightly more than the mild breakup I'd get on the 03o, but the 04X gets wicked dark at the fringes of reception instead of the regular breakup I am used to.

Are the 04X an upgrade over 03o? I have a hard time justifying their price over the 03o. They're a better goggle than an HDO2 at the same price I'd say, with better DVR and a less green-tinted display. Skyzone support is via China though so if you ever need something fixed, expect to wait a couple of months longer than Fatshark's warranty service. How about this? The SKY03o is the best value you can get for your goggledollar, with the SKY04X having a couple advantages for a 25% more money."

One major point where i differ is calling the larger FOV an advantage. While I didn't get a ton of time with them, I found the larger FOV to be mildly stressful, and fatiguing to my eyes. I have to literally look my eyeballs to the edge of their range of motion in order to see OSD elements, and I could not fit the goggles in a way that allowed me to see crisp corners and edges of the screen, so some of the image is lost. And when you move your eyes to see one part of the screen, you are no longer seeing another part of the screen. For example, I literally have to, "look away from the wheel," in order to check vBatt/etc. I also experienced a strange effect of the image not being overall centered. When I moved the googles in attempt to center the image, they felt crooked on my face. Certainly it's my face that would be crooked, but oddly I don't experience this effect with the 03O's. So, losing the larger FOV as an advantage alone tips the scale such that I cannot reasonably keeps the 04X. But I'll continue.. The modularity of the goggles is moot, given only Skyzone's modules fit, and their receiver itself lacks compatibility with some current cameras, at least for now. And, "quadversity?" I had that with the EV200D, and it's rather heavy, not to mention using anything but stubbys renders the overall form unwieldy, approaching down right ridiculous. Finally, I agree the scroll wheels are the perfect input and menu navigation mechanism, but my fingers find them too small to use comfortably, and the index 'click,' when scrolling menu items, progressively falls out of sync with the menu selection indicator, one full click every 5 or 6 items.

edit: my post was somehow truncated, and is missing the last 1/3. Whats more frustrating than that? lol  I don't have the endurance to rewrite it at the moment. Maybe I will try later...

edit2: i tried, and failed miserably, to recapture my summary here. Perhaps my next *action* will convey the message instead. Since a substantial part of my motivation for buying the 04x' was to have a spare set of goggles to share, I will likely seek an exchange for another set of 03O's, and store credit, instead of a refund.

Thanks for that. Now I can tell my wife ... "I don't have too many quads! LOOK! Santiago has 30!" ;-)

I haven't updated the firmware as of yet. I've experienced the image roll a few times.Though I recall Rapidfire/TBS Fusion also having image roll issues at low signal (from JB's YT video).

I'm one of the ones that has to replace the fan (cause I'm not into shipping my goggles to a repair center - back around the other side of the world; like shipping your vehicle for an oil change!). Skyzone sent a replacement fan, but I was not too happy to have a message from Skyzone Daniel telling me I had to cut the wires and solder the new fan in!!! Fortunately (in my misfortune - having a noisy fan and needing to replace it) he posted the goggle disassembly procedure in picture & video details on their FB page. Still, it's annoying to have to replace a part on something new.

Current suggested approach with SZ firmware is the pretty universal, "..if it ain't broke.." approach.

Also, I am only familiar with single receiver, and standard diversity vRx's. If screen rolling is normal for these video feed fusing vRx's, when at the edge of video transmission range, that is, 'low signal,' then I have no use case for them. I can fly through heavy static/snow long enough to recover signal, but when the screen rolls, I can hardly stay standing.

I'm sorry to hear about your fan. Not really acceptable imo, but I'd say it's on par for the current state of the 04X'. Having to cut wires on a brand new $500 product in order to repair it, and repair it yourself no less, is... ..well, the plight of an early adopter I suppose. I can't really say why I assumed SZ abstained from this now common practice, but I am definitely on guard going forward.

Oh hey! Can you be so kind as to share the disassembly, and any other procedures, here in this thread or a new thread, for folks that are outside the walled garden? There aren't many of us, but I personally would extend to you the gratitude of a thousand rescued dogs if you could.

Yes, by all means you can use me as reference for, "absurdly multi-rotor obsessed." My lovely ex- says they are like my kids, and that they have my eyes. LOL! Among her many strengths, lack a cracking wit she does not.. Anyway, I will hope with you that your lady doesn't immediately realize that the comparison, making you appear reasonable, is but another paver in your own path to 30. ha! Indeed, while I've acheived some of my top most frustrated moments doing it, I enjoy building these things as much as I enjoy flying them, maybe more. This is why so many.

To be clear, I understand why, and respect that you will keep your goggles, and endure the growing pains. While it's impossible for me to completely omit my personal bias, I've aimed to provide details of my experience here such that they may be useful to others, by sparing them the hassle, or preparing them for engaging it. And if you're engaging, don't stop giving them h***! ..so as to avoid lowering the standard of expectation for all.

I tried to upload the video (320MB), but I keep getting an error.

The pics assume you've removed the head band, Rx covers and module.
Removing the fan cover is shown in the video. Simply remove the 4 screw. No prying required.

The head band can be removed either by pulling it to one side and slipping it out by its edge or after you've split the 2 halves of the goggle case. The former is easy enough.

Lift the 'SKY04X' label off the side of the goggles. I used tweezers, slipped under the label from the middle by the seam in the case, and slowly pry. It is reusable.

Remove the 3 screws and separate the 2 halves of the goggle case by releasing the clips at the front edge of the goggle case.

The clips are part of the lower half of the case, thus gently press on the lower half where the clips are shown. Note that the Rx module bay (black) cases are attached to the top half of the goggle case.

Unplug the power button before opening the goggles further.

The goggles can then be opened faced, hinged by the front edge.

Unplug the ribbon cable. I used tweezers to pry the plug up. you can also unplug the fan (note polarity) at the front of the main board.

You can then unscrew the main board by removing the 4 screws shown.

The video shows well how the fan can easily be removed. The fan is slipped onto 4 plastic stems (which the fan cover screws into). Essentially, once the 4 screws (holding the fan cover) and the fan cover is removed, the fan can be removed by gently prying it up for the first 1mm or so. Then it can easily be pulled up. Use a finger to hold the main board (and whatever is above it) spaced far enough to allow the fan wire/plug to clear the goggles.

[RANT]
I expressed my annoyance at Skyzone for sending me a replacement fan for which the wires had not been pulled out of the case. Especially given that the root cause of the noisy fan is explained as having pulled on those wires too hard. I extricated the fan wires from the fan case by holding the wires near the case using wide nose tweezers (not the ones pictured) and twisting the wire sideways before rotating the case against the tweezers. It would have made more sense for Skyzone to do this and test that the fan was not damaged in the process before shipping a replacement half way across the world.

You are now ready to install the replacement fan. Re-assembly is done by reversing the steps above.

You pushed the new fan onto the stems with the wire towards the front of the goggles. You'll have observed how the fan wire was tucked on the main board in the front of the goggles (pictured in above post). To re-connect the OLED ribbon cable, I used the wide nose tweezers to hold the ribbon cable plug aligned and a finger to push it back in place. My fingers were too big to try to hold the cable end aligned. Once the ribbon cable is reconnected, you are ready to close the goggles. Be aware of the following cautions ...

Ensure the light block pads are placed properly. Slide the IPD adjustment to ensure they are.

Plug the power button back in. Ensure all wires are tucked in.

Ensure the ribbon cable and all internals are clear of the case before snapping the halves together.

Hope this helps and was not too pedantic.

I'll see how I can get the video up as well.

You won't be able to upload a video to the forum, and if you could it wouldn't be a streamable video so everyone would have to download it first before they could watch it. Post it on YouTube or Vimeo and then paste the link back here and the video will get embedded into your post as a streamable video.
