UJ's Ronin MK1 Build Log
#1
Exciting times. One of our own has designed a sick frame and it is so nice to see the support.

This build is a bit of a no idea what it will be but I have some bits lying around so figured i'll use them and see what happens.

I am going for a fairly light build but as the vtx I have is only 500mw and I have yet to consider if a GPS is going to go on it I reckon it will be a bit of a zinger around which will hopefully stay aloft longer than 10 minutes.

The components and weights are as follows.

So hopefully an under 120gram build. I have purchased 1 x 450mah and 2 x 850mah 4s batteries so flying weight will be approx 180 to 230grams depending on battery used.

Just waiting for the motors and camera to arrive so by next week hopefully I will show some progress and the more important pictures Smile

Thank you UJ!!!!

No naked gopro or HD cam? Dude that is gonna be super light. If you go that light, you could likely lose the brace plate and just use M2.5x6mm screws to stay flush with the clinch nuts. The first prototype didn't have a brace plate.

I crash too much so need all the strength possible lol

So close but yet so far. As mentioned in the chat I missed the small fact that I didn't order the camera when ordering parts. Not as bad as it could have been as I don't have any batteries either. Hopefully both will arrive Monday or Tuesday.

That weight adds up so fast. Its up to 94.3 grams so far as shown. I probably have 2g of tape and heat shrink on it but I reckon that's worth the weight as it will make it more aerodynamic and hopefully reduce vibrations. Still on track to be very close to 120grams.

I also couldn't get any 850mah batteries either so will be flying on 450's and 650mah batteries.

It's going to be a very quick little quad mwoohahaha

Have to come up with a name. At this stage I think I will name it Roger  Big Grin

I'm curious how it works out on 650mAh. Also curious to hear what you think about those Mini Immortal T's. I'm getting LQ warnings really close by with them.

Hi UJ,

I guess I was lucky, I already had all the parts so the only thing I needed was the frame.  Smile

I just did a rough estimate on the weight and it comes out to be about 130 grams at this point which is lighter than most of my other 4 inch builds...So... I am excited about that. If I really wanted to shave some weight, I could shave off about 10 grams by direct soldering the motors and use a smaller capacitor. On the other hand, I like the connectors on the motors since I plan to swap for different ones as I go. I have a Plan  Dodgy

I intend to use my standard GNB 3S 1100 mAh battery.

Yeah, man, you got to name it. I named mine before I started my thread Ronin-MK1 ONE.

motor connectors Undecided be aware it can decrease the efficiency and performance. i believe on 4inch the tiny cam connectors arent well well suited.

I put my cam connectors and camera together before I put onto the frame.

If you really really want to decrease some weight, are using 1404's, and happen to have 6x M2.5 x 6mm screws lying around, you can actually lose the brace plate. (Stacking washers 2mm high to compensate for the brace plate might zero out the weight savings.) You will take a hit on your gyro_scaled but still well within range to push the PIDs with aggressive filtering (Dynamic and RPM only).

Hi Ronin,

I just used your bolts without the brace plate and seems to work fine for me. The do stick up a bit, but I will just use a nylon spacer for the FC, maybe a 5mm tall one will work, I always use a nut to hold the bolts anyway, so I will just use the threaded spacer instead. I doubt it will add much weight over what I would have used anyway which would have been a steel nut. We will see how mine works out.

Ok just be very careful man. And for sure conformal coat. Aside from the conductivity risk, the shorter screws actually add up in weight savings. So as an alternative, maybe consider washers instead. You're a wash on the weight difference probably and for sure better off on the clearance. Or maybe combo of both even.

Hi Ronin,

Ok, I will fess up. I was going to use your bolts "just because"; even though the center 2 bolts would require some additional spacing for the FC. But NOW, I have swapped out 5 of the bolts for shorter 6mm ones {fit perfect} which might balance weight for the one 16mm bolt that I will use for antenna mounting. Yeah, I already had a couple of those divider boxes with an assortment of stainless steel M2.5 bolts  Wink

Nice lol I don't know anyone that keeps M2.5 hardware handy so that's awesome. Between the brace plate (~3g) and not having to use washers / using shorter screws (~1g), that's nearly a 5g savings. Maybe not much in itself but could add up with other measures (using 3 instead of 4 motor screws, direct wiring / no connectors, etc).

Just keep an eye on vibrations. Should be perfectly fine with 14XXs but you might recall, the frame couldn't handle 20XXs without that brace plate.

So close to my target weight. Will be a tiny bit heavier as I will probably put a cable tie on the power wires

Maiden flight tomorrow Smile

I agree. They sound and fly totally different to tri blade. Massively torquey imho. I am starting to prefer them. I haven't really looked but have yet to see 4" tri blades that will fit these motors. They have a 1.5mm shaft and need screws.

Batteries have arrived as well Smile

I have never done the black box tune thing so will more than likely have questions about that eventually. Although I probably wont as I normally I just set it up and fly lol. I don't have a preferred setup across my whole fleet other than switches. I just fly the quad how it flies. I do the feel motor thing initially and always my motors are not even the tiniest bit hot when I land. Meh I should do this but just lazy I guess.
