Happymodel CrazyF4 ELRS AIO 5in1 FC
#1
HappyModel has announced the first AIO whoop FC with ELRS (900MHz) built-in:
http://www.happymodel.cn/index.php/2021/...z-elrs-rx/

Specs:
Weight: 4.85g
1S Only
F411 MCU
1.5 UARTs
5A ESC (6A burst)
BLHeli_S O-H-5 FW
900MHz ELRS SPI RX
25-200mW VTX

Kind of a weird mix of features. The 900MHz ELRS link has been shown of being capable of 30km+ @ 10mW, which seems excessive for a 1S 5A board. Fortunately, the ELRS devs said HappyModel already has a 2.4GHz version with a ceramic antenna in the works which should be lighter and provide much better performance (500Hz)!

here we go, longrange radio gear for 1s :-)

So given Happymodel's history of questionable reliability and QC on their flight controllers, hands up who is going to be brave enough to take their 1S quad out on a long distance flight using the CrazyF4 ELRS AIO board Whistling Big Grin

For me, a GPS is mandatory for Long Range, but I don't see where or how to connect one to this FC. Even if you can set up SOFTSERIAL, you still need pads to connect it.  The other thing that I question is that little "whoop like" receiver antenna...wonder how much range you really get with that?  I think that I will stay with FC board that has an F7 or maybe a 405 processor for my long range craft.

I have a feeling that the integration of ELRS into these CrazyF4 1S FC's is really for a more reliable link and "a bit more range" rather than long range, because we all know how crap the integrated FrSky, FlySky, and DSMX receivers are on the AIO whoop FC's. Hopefully ELRS should give more confidence of not getting a failsafe even for close proximity flying. The only odd thing is that they opted to use 900MHz ELRS which requires a fairly large antenna which isn't really suitable for a micro quad. I think 2.4GHz ELRS would be a better integration option for these 1S AIO boards.

+1 for using 2.4ghz instead of 900mhz.

Yes, 900MHz is a strange choice. The explanation I heard was that HM reverse engineered the R9 mm to incorporate it into an AIO before consulting with the ELRS devs. It sounds like they've since straightened them out and we can expect to see a 2.4GHz version shortly.

At either frequency, ELRS should easily be able to outfly the integrated VTX. There are videos of people going out 3km+ at 2.4GHz with the tiny ceramic antenna, so this should be a HUGE improvement over the usual SPI RX we're used to.

why not 900mhz?
900mhz wont be for close proximity performance, not for the usual whoop flystyle.

i would like to see a 4inch or 5inch settup performance with this board :-) i would like to try by myself, but the priority is to low. it seems there are new options with 900mhz onboard combination

Hi Bat,

I want to see this board with at least an F405 processor, maybe and F7...more URARTS Please. Also, may make the antenna removable via a U.FL connection {like they have done with the VTX} at least then there would be options for that antenna as well.

As SnowLeopardFPV mentioned, for me, it is about being able to fly around my backyard or local playground without having to worry. The builtin SPI FrSky or FlSky hardly fly 100 meters. With built-in ExpressLRS, I can build and fly my micro around without having to get Crossfire installed.

It sounds like a great way to get a super lightweight build with a decent receiver. Something that will not stop working if the house blocks the line of sight. I am excited with the new 2.4GHz options. I think I can live with the QC of most manufactures' for the type of flying I do. I understand not everyone flies in their yard or local playground, hopefully there are enough flyers like me to make this a reasonable option. I am willing to take the hits if it will give us better options in the future.

its a solderjob but other antennas is still a option.
f411 is standart for lightweight boards, it would have a free uart for a nameless rc gps. what else would be needed? its under 5g that seems like more benefit than downside from uarts.

We also need a 2S-4S version of this FC with higher rated ESCs like the Crazybee F4 V3.0. A 1S only board with just a 5A ESC has quite a limited use.

Hi Bat,

How would this board have a free UART?   From everything that I have seen, the receiver needs a UART and the SmartAudio needs a UART (rather the TX part of a UART) so there is your 1.5 UARTS...where would you put the GPS??? Even if you did something like SOFTSERIAL, you still need pads for the connection. So far, I have not seen an F411 processor based FC with more than 2 "Hard" UARTS {some of the Flywoo F411 boards do have SOFTSERIAL set up and pads for the connection}.

f411 are limited to two uart, every has two uarts some fc layouts doesnt provide pads for them.
you shouldnt need an uart for a receiver or a vtx as it is serial onboard, not sure how it works with smartaudio. the uart1 might be for smartaudio?!?
an onboard serial receiver does save an uart port. there is nothing else needed to connect to this board than the gps.

Using the link provided in the original post, I have found DIFF settings for the CrazyF4 ELRS. Happymodel shows the Betaflight ports tab as follows:  UART 1 is Serial Rx, UART 2 is the VTX (TBS Smartaudio). Even though the Rx is internal, it appears as though it is still taking a UART. The Smartaudio is on UART 2.

If Happymodel is correct with these Betaflight settings, there really is no UART for a GPS.

Plus there is really only a "Pad" for the RX2; TX2 is really not a pad, but rather just looks like a tiny solder connection.

Call me confused  Confused   So...how do you get the GPS wired up and working with this board  Huh
