If only I was not heavily invested in Crossfire besides it does what I need it to do.

I am tempted but feel I don’t personally require any lower latency than what I can sense nor do I need crazy long range that goes beyond my video signal.

But I do love supporting any OpenSource community.

I am in the same boat by having invested too much in Crossfire to fully jump ship, but unless TBS release a Crossfire receiver that has a ceramic antenna on it then I do still intend to get some ELRS hardware and install it on some of my micro quads.

elrs works great, I jumped from flysky to elrs, happy model 915Mhz and 2.4Ghz JR Tx modules, works great on my Jumper T12 .

new in 1.0.3

Produce more meaningful name to firmware targets (thanks to @justinlampley!)

This is very nice before all firmware were named the same thing rx and tx were all called    firmware.bin   no matter what they were

Device target selection by category, device (Thanks for @justinlampley!)

Target selection by category device .... This is great ! As the list of manufacturers grows so does the target list. This is a much tidier solution Smile

First select the manufacturer, for me HappyModel

And then select the appropriate target

If anybody needed a size comparison
Here is a Frsky XM+ with a HappyModel EP1 with T antenna, and a 5mm prop nut.
Keep in mind that the EP2 has an onboard ceramic antenna that only adds a little height to the rx.

I just looked on RDQ and although "out of stock " the RX's are $13.50 and the JR bay TX module with case is only $29.00.

It sure is making it easy to abandon Frsky.

I have 3 new RXS-R's from before Frsky went bonkers that I am going to sell and replace them with these.

I am watching the Express LRS offerings.

From some of the "how to" articles that I have seen, it is still overly complicated having to update {flash firmware} everything?

UNLESS, the articles are not painting a clear picture and updating is optional {hopefully this is the case}.

My Question is this:

Can I buy the module and receivers, plug in the module, wire up a receiver, select it and GO...
without updating anything.  So, will it work without doing firmware updates??

You have to flash your own firmware at least once in order to set your own unique binding phrase. Also, because this is still a very new system and still a 1.x release, even the full releases are going to have a number of bugs in that will require fixing until the firmware matures and stabilises over time, so you are likely want to going to keep upgrading to the next minor / revision release, at least while the firmware is a version 1.x.

If you haven't already seen it, have a read through Oscar's article a the link below...

With the configurator app, flashing over wifi or via Betaflight pass-through is extremely easy. The firmware has been pretty solid since RC9 at least, and now that v1.0 is out I'm at least as confident in it as I am in Crossfire (and wayyyyyy more than FRsky).

If you're starting from scratch, I'd recommend the 2.4GHz hardware. Even the happymodel stuff has been pretty bulletproof, and it's dirt cheap.

And even though it's a completely free and open source project, the support you get on the ELRS Discord channel is second to none. Their dev team has been incredible to watch, and everyone is super approachable and friendly. Plus, everyone is spread around the globe so you can get a quick answer to any question pretty much 24/7. It's been really incredible to follow, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Hi Snow,

Yeah, it was Oscar's article that made me realize this is way too involved for me to embrace.

The Very First thing....Flash the Latest version of OpenTX... well now that is the first issue. I am running the original Jumper TX that came on my original Jumper T16. At this point, I have no intentions of changing that. My FrSky receivers (both XM+ and R9MM) work fine which I am thankful for. I have everything set up, models set up...and... it all works. By the way, I did NOT have to flash to OpenTX for any of this to work. In fact, my R9 module is just as it came from the factory, I haven't upgraded it. So...if OpenTX is required, then I am out right from the start.

In my opinion, the module should contain what it needs and work with pretty much any version of OpenTX including the original Jumper TX fork. Surely, this is not asking too much. Consequently, if it doesn't work with the Jumper TX firmware then I am out of the game...at least until such time that I find some REALLY COMPELLING reason to move the transmitter to "real" OpenTX...OR... until I determine I need a new transmitter with OpenTX.

By waiting, perhaps the ExpressLRS will mature and stabilize enough that any new transmitter will work with it without the necessity to upgrade the OpenTX on it.

Yeah, think I will just wait and watch.
