Cometh the Storm: Fat Shark Byte Frost [PASS ON THIS!]
#76
With the Caddx collaboration, honestly the only thing I don't like about DJI now is the looks of the goggle. I know sounds lame but I really hate the looks that much. With that said, given my investment in time and $$ into Byte Frost, I'm not sure I'd make the switch now.

Quick feedback on the most recent firmware ...

* The OSD additions are great but I don't use GPS so no real additional value to me. However, the PIDs and VTX adjustments via radio are MUCH needed and work great.

* The "improvements" in the DVR ... it is a deterioration. I am seeing MUCH more stuttering and picture noise. It's a step (or three) backwards. Equally if not more annoying, it is splitting up DVR files in an arbitrary manner - as short as 1 second lol wow. Super annoying ...

Ok so speaking with Divimath, this thing is very speed hungry as far SD cards are concerned - it needs more than just class 10.  As much for my own benefit, here's a running log of what's worked and what hasn't...

Good SD Cards
Bad SD Cards

I also did some low power vtx testing. I had been seeing a lot of static at the full 450mw setting and was worried my 35V caps were underpowered. But it became clear that it was the antenna and not the capacitor. So I lowered the power down to 25mw to do some testing. I forgot I lowered it when I flew this morning and had to unarm in midair because I just completely lost signal once the quad was facing me. A lot of people were complaining of poor reception using SMA pigtails which is what I am currently using. On top of that, I am using a stubby antenna.

So I had suspected this may be an issue. Here is a quick video showing how bad the image gets when the drone is facing me (you can see me sitting near the corner of the street) ...

So I will first try stubby Triumph antennas which clear the lipo more than the Axii stubby. Then I will try a direct MMCX connection antenna. That was my setup on the Acrobrat and I never had poor reception issues.

Quick update on "ByFr" development ... I think all the cool kids are going with that abbreviation now lol.

An update to the proper SD card ... basically any U3 Class 10 SD card should work.

Also, my hats off to Divimath. The guy is constantly working on this thing. And by constantly, I mean I'll email him in the middle of the night and I'll get a response in a few hours in some cases, with an entirely new firmware patch to address any issue - even issues I didn't think were really issues lol.

An emergency patch was released by Divimath earlier: https://fatshark.helpscoutdocs.com/artic...byte-frost

This patch only updates the groundstation for reports of desync. I myself experienced this issue but only once in all the times I've flown and it happened after landing and trying to rearm. Others look different mine looked like this ...

Divimath was kind enough to provide me an early release of the patch with specific instructions. Don't bother with fatshark's confusing instructions. It simply replaced the groundstation firmware (HDZERO_VA.bin) in the prior OE.F4.24 update. If you have already installed that update, you just need to flash the groundstation with the new bin file - the vtx is untouched. If you have not installed that update before, just replace the bin file and proceed with the update as normal. (Why he can't just write those two sentences, I have no idea.)

To me, there was actually some video degradation with this upgrade. Can't really see it in this video but it seemed very apparent to me in flight. I've been going back and forth with Divimath on this he seems to think there is very little difference if at all. He may be right but I will keep an eye out for any other degradation ...

I was mentioning in another thread that I was pretty much done with Byte Frost after flying a quad with it perfectly fine, setting it down to fly an analog quad, then going back to that Byte Frost only to find that for absolutely no reason (there was no crash or any issues during that flight), the Byte Frost stopped working. Quite literally, out of nowhere.

I've since pretty much sworn off Byte Frost and will be converting the 2 quads I have back to analog. But I just couldn't leave this super-stupid thing alone.

It turns out it is the Runcam Racer HD. I replaced the camera with the one used on the other working Byte Frost build and the VTX worked fine. This evidently is a common issue since Divimath predicted this might be the problem when I emailed him. So now in addition to this super finnicky VTX, the Runcam Racer HD, which is the only camera that works with the Byte Frost in 60 FPS AHD (analog HD) that you can only order direct from Runcam via China slowboat ... is a total hit or miss.

So.

Done.

With.

This.

I went DJi and am done with Analog. Even with the analog module adapter the dji goggles make excellent fpv goggles.
When DJI fixed the latency issues, I was sold.
Goodbye analog.

I'm sticking with analog.

But if anyone that was hell bent on going HD asked me ... DJI.

It's a shame you decided to throw in the towel on this one. You were our "inside man" on Byte Frost and I think there were some high hopes that it would eventually pan out and end up a success. I gave up following the Byte Frost thread on RCG a long time ago so you were the main source of info.

I don't know where you stand on this, but I guess all the gear has a least a 1 year warranty even though it was classed as "beta" kit? You spent a lot of money on all the Byte Frost stuff, money that could be better re-purposed for other FPV gear. If it was me, I would so my damndest to get a refund of all the gear under warranty as being "not fit for purpose". Unless there was some kind of exemption in the small print for the purchase of the Byte Frost gear then I would expect you to be covered under normal consumer law (although I admit that I don't know how well consumer law covers buyers in the US compared to that of our laws here in the UK). GetFPV have to take some of the risk and responsibility of purchases by selling a "beta" product, so I would put their warranty policy to the test and try to get a full refund.

Eh, I don't think that's going to fly with getFPV. Also, although I plan to swap everything back to analog this week, I do plan to hang onto this stuff into February where evidently there's some "big news" coming out (at least according to this fanboi extraordinaire on RCG). I'm also curious to see how much of a cold splash of water going back to analog on the 5 inchers will feel like. I flew a bit of analog with the long range rig but I was more focused on seeing through static rather than admiring pixel fidelity lol. So if it's just too miserable for me (which I doubt), I'll still have the option to go back. Otherwise ... ebay.

So the big Feb news is that they are working on a goggle module set to debut in the spring.

Does that solve all the issues you're having though?

To be honest I'm suprised they didn't start with the goggle module, the screen seems like its for the wrong target market.

The goggle module is a huge deal and I completely agree - they ought to have started off with that.

But really the reason I've stepped away is just the reliability. It's way too on / off. For no apparent reason. The last straw for me was actually not HDZero's fault but rather Runcam's. Their Racer HD just went broke on me quite literally out of nowhere. I was really looking forward to flying that drone too as it was quite a drive. Luckily that drone was not my primary reason for driving out that far. Still, I had had enough. And since the Racer HD is really the only camera that works with the unit and can only be ordered direct from China, it just put me over the edge.

The severe level of fanboi-ism surrounding this thing and Greg's high school girly way of approaching things didn't help much either. As I mentioned I am hanging onto my gear for now but just flying analog on all my builds.
