TBS Fusion Module V2.15, V2.16 & V2.17 Firmware - Major Update
#1
TBS have just released some major firmware updates (V2.15 & V2.16) for their Fusion module. Details of all the changes are below. Use TBS AgentX to update your module via USB as per usual.

EDIT: There are now even newer firmware versions available for the TBS Fusion module. See another post HERE which contains a list of all the past and present firmware versions.

Massive TBS Fusion UI/UX/Cloud update!

Over the past 3 months we've been refining and polishing the TBS Fusion. Massive shout out to George Chrysostomos and Steele Davis for all their work on this! If you want to skip my rambling and hear it directly from the source, check out Steele's Analog Goggle 2021 video here:

There's too many changes to list individually, but the highlights are the unification navigation, the new in-goggle user interface, and all the improvements in the spectrum analyzers / visualizer modes. These changes make for an entirely revamped Fusion which is now just a dream to use!

Under the hood we've also been getting ready for big TBS Cloud / Wifi module updates. For now, the new feature is the ability to connect directly between Crossfire / Tracer and the Fusion, bypassing the phone as your hotspot! The connectivity allows synchronizing your VTx and Fusion to always be on the same channel, and you can get a "TBS Core"-like OSD of all the Crossfire telemetry data projected onto your video feed, without the need for an OSD chip on your drone! And you can configure all of your CRSF devices, including Betaflight / KiSS FC parameters, right through the Fusion as you would through Agent Lite or the Crossfire LUA script. All of this happens without the need for additional hardware. Just upgrade your wifi module software, the Fusion, and done.

You will need the latest v1.41 TBS Cloud firmware, which you can download and install with the link below. Please keep in mind that the Wifi firmware is still alpha version, with a final release around the corner. So upgrade only if you are living life on the fast lane:

Last but not least, Orqa is currently working on a plastic injection molded cover that will be sold with Orqa goggles, as well as sold separately. We're very excited about the future collaborations that this will enable! In the meantime, we do have 3D printed parts on the TBS Fusion product page (link at the bottom).

As always, a huge shout out to our alpha and beta testers who have helped out tremendously in getting all of these ideas verified and perfected. We've got a few more exciting announcements coming over the next few weeks! ?

You can get the TBS Fusion from any of our dealers or the TBS website: https://www.team-blacksheep.com/products...tbs_fusion

Release Notes

V2.15 [2021-03-05]

OLED Improvements
  • Main Matrix screen new graphics and better arrangement in elements.
  • Master Menu and Sub Menus redesign.
  • Auto Lock user interface which is more interactive and easy to use - move through the best channels, and choose what to watch.
  • Multi Lock (Spectator Mode) improved interface, fast scan the entire 5Ghz and watch the channels found with the Up/Down button.
OSD
  • Band Scanner improved to perform like a Spectrum Analyzer:-
    • From the OLED you can check each band with the Up/Down button.
    • From the OSD side you can check optimal noise level, current noise level and RSSI spikes. Select band with right click.
  • While you choose your channel from Matrix, you are going to see two scanners:-
    • A broad ultra quick Spectrum Analyzer from 5Ghz-6Ghz showing noise.
    • A dedicated Band Scanner where the user can overview the entire 5GHz spectrum in one click.
  • Focus Target - A square or a cross in the center of your screen for better focus on a track.
Functionality
  • Locking joystick - Unlocks with one click (left, right, up, down). Selecting the channel with the Enter button tunes to the channel and locks the joystick again.
  • Left click is always used to exit from every feature (except Matrix).
  • Menu options are selected in list format.
  • CRSF menu enrichment with all the settings of Fusion.
  • Custom frequency - Push and hold center button, select a custom frequency with Up/Down by 1Mhz and with Left/Right by 10Mhz.
  • TBS Cloud / CRSF Synchronization (requires latest Wi-Fi firmware connecting Fusion to your Crossfire / Tracer / Tango 2).
  • Bypass TBS Cloud - Fusion can now directly connect to other Wifi devices, bypassing mobile device and online connectivity.
  • VTX Synchronization:-
    • Follow: Fusion automatically selects the current VTX frequency.
    • Lead: User chooses from quick menu of Matrix (push and hold center button) to send Fusion frequency to VTX.
    • Auto-Lead: Every change in Fusion frequency, the VTX tunes to that frequency automatically.
    • Dynamic VTX Power: New algorithm with quick ramp up and slow ramp down.
    • Telemetry OSD: Check Battery, VTX data, Crossfire LQ, GPS info or all of them together from your OSD.

V2.16 [2021-03-17]

OLED Improvements
  • Matrix replaced with a real-time overview for current band similar to the OSD. Furthermore main screen received huge Frequency and Channel name letters.
  • If there's a VTX sync or not (lead, lead auto, follow), a small label appears bottom right corner.
Bug Fixes on OSD
  • Telemetry CRSF OSD added the RSSI of the TX.

V2.17 [2021-06-11]
  • Bug fixes on CRSF menu.

Does the VTX need to be connected to the CRSF RX to use the dynamic power and auto-lead features, or can this work through the FC via SA?

Yes, unfortunately for the Lead and Auto-Lead feature to work you have to connect the Crossfire RX directly to the VTX using either SmartAudio or CRSF connections. If you do this you them lose the ability to use VTX features offered by Betaflight such as low power disarm. I assume the Dynamic FTX Power requires the same.

The Follow feature states that it can work with an FC in between the Crossfire RX and the VTX, but I don't know how that can be possible because the Crossfire RX would somehow need to know what the power of the VTX is and relay that back to the Crossfire TX and then the Fusion (over WiFi). I always fly alone and just stay on the same channel so I've never tried using the any VTX channel switching features from my Fusion Module before. I just tried it right now on my one of my quads using the Follow feature and it doesn't seem to work. Unfortunately TBS don't seem to have published any example wiring schematics for the Follow feature like they have for the Lead and Auto-Lead feature.

I might raise a support ticket and ask for more clarification because information about setting up and configuring those features seem to be sparse, but it looks like the VTX switching features may be of limited use unless you bypass the FC and wire SmartAudio direct to the VTX. That would also mean that any VTX switching features won't work with Tramp enabled VTX's.

The Fusion module does appear very interesting now with the updates and all this integrated functionality coming its way. (Although there are still bits and pieces around the TBS cloud that are a work in progress).

I am now wondering if I should still continue using my IRC RapidFire module that has not had a firmware update for almost 1 year.

Off topic but related:

There was a CRSF passthrough functionality request in Betaflight (somewhat similar to blheli_s or blheli_32 passthrough) that could have enabled some of these cool features by connecting the VTX direct to the FC via a UART rather than SA but the Betaflight devs could not get much traction on this : https://github.com/betaflight/betaflight/issues/9030

So AFAIK we would need to bypass the FC and directly connect the tbs vtx to the crossfire/tracer rx via crsf protocol.

I am not even sure SA would support these functions (I have not seen any published tests/examples) although I have read often at time that it is bi-directional (half-duplex) communication protocol.

Gal Kremer put out a comparison video between TBS Fusion and IRC Rapidfire (using the latest firmware updates):

One important take away from the video and various comments is that the onboard Fusion wifi module seems to cause interference.

I would assume most would have wifi turned ON by default to stay connected with the cloud and benefit from follow/lead/dynamic power etc modes.

I am sure TBS will make this better once they get more feedback.

He's also using a FuriousFPV Dock-King which is known for not playing well with the Fusion (and also some other modules) for whatever reason, so it would be good to see him run some more testing with the WiFi switched off and not using Dock-Kings.

Yep, this looks like it's a fight to the death in both the RC Link and Analgue VTX arenas.

In the red corner we have ImmersionRC, and in the blue (black) corner we have Team Blacksheep Big Grin

All of this hot competition is a win-win for the consumer whichever of those two companies products you own.

IRC launches products with a big bang but later slow down.

My Rapidfire has not received an update since last year.
My PowerPlay DVR has been on beta firmware since last year.
Tramp HV or Nano’s have no firmware updates.

TBS on the other hand is keeping things fresh even with old hardware along with the fun stuff they are planning with the cloud integration.

For anyone interested who also missed it, TBS Fusion firmware version 2.17 was released a couple of weeks ago on 11th June 2021. All it actually contains are some minor bug fixes for the CRSF menu so you might not consider those worth the effort to update the firmware for, but it's there if you like to be on the latest version.
