Help Getting Started with Tiny Whoops
#1
The short version of the question:

Can someone recommend an inexpensive antenna setup for getting into indoor tiny whoop flying with a WhoopFly16? Especially I do not know if I need left/right/linear or if that's even the right question to ask. The product page lists the drone antenna as: "5.8g copper tube antenna 70mm".

Longer version of the question with some background:

I was watching a couple of Nick Burns videos and he convinced me to try out indoor Tiny Whoop flying and maybe sign up for IGOW4.

I'm currently flying digital with DJI Goggles V2 and I'm thinking my best bet is to get a conversion kit to enable me to fly analog.

Here's what I'm thinking that entails buying:

  1. Conversion kit: BDI Digital Adapter V2
  2. Video receiver: TBS Fusion
  3. Antenna: ???
On top of that I'll need to get batteries and an ELRS setup going (which is something I was planning on doing anyway with my BabyHawk 2).

The whole shopping list is getting just a bit intimidating.

  1. The drone
  2. 2 1S batteries
  3. A 1S charger (I assume my ToolkitRC M4AC cannot charge 1S but shout at me if that's wrong)
  4. Radiomaster Zorro
  5. 2 batteries for Zorro
  6. Plus the 3 items needed for receiving VTX
It's looking to be in the $500 range to get all setup. Which gives me a bit of pause because I could get a GEPRC CineLog20 with DJI O3 for that.

Thanks for the help.

I like the ORT Vee antennas better than the little rubber thingies, gets noticeably better reception especially going around & behind things. Still pretty cheap too.

You meant 20 1S batteries, right?

If it will work, I like the Foxeer Wildfire module I have on the goggles now. Dramatically improved reception, picture quality, and worth the price to upgrade.

I know there's other models newer & faster and all, but . . . 65s were born to Whoop around your house, apartment, closet . . . it's small & fast and fun . . . a Mobula 6 with the 19kvs is really plenty fast, unless you live in the mall, and more power & punch than most all need for inside. They have a 25kv version too, and is much faster, but you also lose a bunch of air time, & the best I've got from the 19s is about 4 minutes on some 350 batts. It's well protected with the full canopy, and can take a good bashing & tumbling around in the house. I do fly my 75s in the house, and can do about 90% of what the 65s can, but the 65s still do inside better, and will be easier to get comfortable in the house with it, especially since you're already flying FPV.

I have two, and one is 5 years old, just grabbed another one from those sellers.

that antenna is for the radio, not the Whoop . . . and your radio better come with an antenna already . . .

Sorry, but BetaFPV batteries are garbage, and their BS connector is proprietary garbage, and does little to nothing over a solid pin PH2 in real life, except costing more. I have bought from them before, but Rotor Riot's prices aren't that great either.

I still don't like flying an open prop through the house after 5 years, and would most definitely not start out FPVing through the house with it.

I'll probably get those ORT Micro Vee's. Thanks for the recomendation!
Also, the Mobula 6 is my other front runner for the drone. Good to hear that they "can take a good bashing." I think I'd prefer the 65 over 75, my main reason for looking at the FlyWoop16 was its claimed durability.

Yeah, I just tried to keep everything on the rotor riot store for the 10% off, the webleedfpv 1s lipos are a lot better than the betafpv ones from what I have heard. But I can not say for myself because I only have 2 1s lipos and that is just from research that I have done, Brian would know better than me.
Would the open prop on a drone that small hurt or damage the house?

Didn't want to seem picky, but I've had, as well as too many others had bad experiences/batteries from Beta going back to brushed stuff. They don't make a lot of their own stuff, just re-branded, which nothing wrong with that if you pick a good source . . . which at least hasn't happened to them yet. . . . although they seemed to have bought out RacerX & their Twig line. I think they made that stupid little proprietary connector because their batts sucked and couldn't compete, so they came up with a connector nobody else has to fit their batteries with the other side . . . which nobody else has. They only have a real improvement at almost & full throttle, and even that is negligible. Plus their over priced.

I've used Rotor Riot before looking for special parts & looked over their site, & I'd buy from them again if they had something I wanted now. GetFPV is kinda the same way, might be a little bigger shop. I'll mostly go to RDQ or Pyro, they both have a great selection, reasonable prices even with shipping compared to overseas, especially if you want it in a few days. I always look for their sales, and you can usually save a bunch.

1S batts for my 65s, I usually use either GnB 350HVs, can usually find them in 6 packs on Amazon for under $20 shipped, my last order. The 380s are a bit more than their 30 mAh are worth to me, plus a little weight. 1S Crazypony batts are great too when you can find them, and are usually lighter. Don't like URUAV batts, poor quality, and actually fall apart. Not real crazy for HM batts either. RDQs are rebranded GnBs, but I've just used their bigger cell batts, but those are great with great air time.  Tattu are always rock solid, good average performance, but a bit pricey for a good brand, but not a "premium" brand, although they do make a good specialty line. Talons are great if you can find them too. Out of all those choices on the good side, I think the ones that are on sale when I want them are the best . . . till next time anyway, and I won't get hurt.

For me, just an average flyer who likes to whoop around in the house over Winter & rainy days always, and any excuse, really, but do have a lot of time & batts in them. I don't feel the cheapie batteries are worth it. You may get a couple, or even a good pack, but the next three that went out were the usually not so good. I also don't buy the "premium" batts like the Nitro Nectar. Those are what Nate (Shutterbug) compared identical Whoops with a solid pin PH2 & the other the proprietary BT Beta plug. Said the difference was like flying a Nitro Nectar vs a "regular" Tattu or GnB like we all fly. I would never know if that was just one of my batts working a little better or not, and sure wouldn't pay the premium price for next to nothing.

My brushed 65s get over 5 minutes FPV on the GnB 350s. My M6 & my M6 clone with an iFlight 1S board, both with the JESC upgrade, the M6 will just get to 4 minutes & mine about 4 1/2. I have a set of the newest 802/20,000kvs coming that even at the higher kv, should get noticeably better air time, and maybe I'll finally get my 5 minutes on a standard 65.

There's a lot of people on here and the other forums who have a lot more experience than me, and if you've seen any video from Nick Burns reviewing a Whoop running through his house, even an 85 . . . that's not me, not even close with a 65. I'll race myself around the house, have a nice circle through with a medium hall, a family room, and a good long run downstairs to the bar & back, but I like doing chair & table diving, the U turn back through bedroom to the kitchen, and am always nicking a table leg, or over or under the chair rail and go tumbling. That what the ducts are for, you bounce off what you hit, you're light enough to not cause damage to anything with some weight to it, but of course can always hit something the wrong . . . or is it the right . . . way and break it. With open props the props are going to be hitting first & keep spinning & hitting into what ever, and be thrown across the floor or carpet more with the props spinning like wheels . . . plus all the carpet fuzzies, threads & general dust . . . and easier to break something expensive  . . . ducts are waaay cheaper than divorce attorneys . . . .

Yeah, I can see that
Because if you clipped something the open prop would get thrown across the floor in the other hand the ducts that would not have that happen. Yeah, I do not have much experience with many drones because all I can afford(being a kid) is the cetus pro kit which I ordered from rotor riot and was happy with their customer service. The only knowledge that I really have is based on a lot of research that I have done on them in my free time.
Thanks for the info!

Dogcom 1S BT2.0 are apparently ok as well. I just found a supplier that doesn't take the piss over here.

I use BT2.0 Lipos and the BetaFPV branded ones are definitely not brilliant. But then i find PH2.0 to sag even more than BT2.0. My suggestion is to make your own mind up. There is also GNB27, but the connectors don't seem to be very strong and they end up deforming after about 200 uses. If you were going for a 2S capable whoop, you could also go to XT30. GNB do 1S XT30 Lipos. I just use 300mAh BT2.0 Lipos for my whoops. I get a couple of minutes of flight time.

But if you have any sense you will only need the divorce lawyer once (or maybe if you had sense you wouldn't have got married to start with). Tongue

If all I had was cents, it wouldn't be worth divorcing me . . . so she has the good sense not to . . . at least yet . . . on top of all else, we're still best friends after well over 40 years. She has graciously put up with all my hobbies, joined in on some, no interest in others, but has her own things she likes doing to keep her busy. Never has said anything about my purchases, and I do spend a lot more on my play time, but I'll also pick up some of her craft stuffs & get her gift certs here & there just for the helluvit. If we would get a divorce, it would be to protect our assets if one of us would end up in assisted living, so they just don't take everything we have and worked for & leave us sol . . .

Dober, you can still have a riot with a brushed Whoop, I still fly my brushed 65s through the house almost as much as my brushless, and can still get in trouble just like the brushless too. You can fly them outside, less wind the better, but a little wind also helps your flying by compensating for it in all your moves. If you have room inside, you can line up chairs & tables, or more chairs in different layouts (courses) to practice on, and when it gets easy, change it around. I've seen some kool small courses with squares & circles lit up with LEDs to fly through, and people get pretty creative.

Hope you do enjoy it, and get enough that you're comfortable with general flying, then it really starts getting fun. Run into problems or questions, post away, that's what these forums are here for, and your solution probably helped a ½ dozen people who didn't ask. Best of luck with it.

Solid Pin PH2 connectors don't do that, and last a good long time too. Also gives you a ton more battery options and battery charger options.
