ExpressLRS is not magic - some downsides

The Configurator requires a total rework IMO, but then so does OpenTX!.  Like books have proof readers, these sorts of high user interaction software need to be tested against people NOT familiar with the concepts and processes!

Consider all of this is developed free of charge... you only need to buy the hardware. But I agree the https://www.expresslrs.org webpage is not easy reading for newcomers to the hobby. But then again, most things in this hobby have quite a learning curve.

Btw. You might want to consider EdgeTX instead of OpenTX. The OpenTX project seems not very active at this time and most think it won't be in the future. EdgeTX however is very alive and considered by many the new standard for your radio..

Turns out ELRS actually works quite well for subs as well:

Yeah I wish ELRS would be as simple as Crossfire is right now. Sounds like in the near future, we may get closer to that level of refinement with ELRS 3.0. Lots of sweet features on the way it seems.

I've been using ELRS since the first 2.4ghz happymodel tx was released and it's definitely gotten better over time. I've only failsafed while trying long range and have gotten close to 5 miles out in my area. Plenty far for me as my video starts getting crappy that far out. Guessing the horizon tree line blocks my LOS when I get that far out. Otherwise no failsafes while flying over water or in bandos or anything. Been rock solid for me. Easier on my wallet too. 13 bucks per rx is nice.

Golden rule of thumb. Never fly over water without a GPS module installed and Betaflight GPS Rescue / INAV Return-To-Home configured and tested. Granted it's not easy to do that on a micro quad (assuming that's what it was) but unless you are happy taking the risk it is safer to just fly larger quads over water which have the ability to run GPS.

Only fail safe that lost a quad.

I flew both 2.5" and 3" toothpicks out over the lake, chasing power boats and seadoo etc.I was out maybe 600m on FlySky with crappy omni black antenna.

So what happened to Sparky.
915Mhz ELRS. Everybody says fail safe is not possible

1. Moxon on Jumper TLite. So only about 90' of angle.
Im also holding it up at angle.. so thats worse.

2. No diversity. The receiver has HUGE nulls. at the tips.

3. Its not full 900Mhz antenna. The mini antenna, range is 1/4.

4. I was sitting on dock. Maybe interference from boats parked to my side.. I doubt it was more than minor.

Went from 100 LQ and RSSI -81 -82 to RSSI -97 and LQ dropping to 20 within 2 sec in slow banked turn 30m up.

Yeah, I've read quite a few stories about failsafes on ExpressLRS so no control link is 100% foolproof unfortunately. Even the 6.x firmware versions of Crossfire seem to have had numerous failsafe issues which doesn't instill much confidence, thus the reason I don't fly out over water or even over dense tree canopies where I will likely have no chance of recovering my quad if it failsafes for any reason. That is why I have now vowed to fit GPS to any quad that can take it (the large quads) or make sure I fly around the outside of such risky obstacles rather than over them.
