buying goggles without a receiver - is that a thing?
#1
I'm planning on building my first drone, but I couldn't find on ebay any goggles that use 2.4Ghz instead of 5.8, which is illegal where I live.so my question is, is it possible to buy the goggles with the screen separately, then use a separate receiver?

Yes you can buy a receiver/goggles/etc separately. Although i have no clue if they still make vtx in 2.4GHz variants. One for someone who knows.

Just curious, what country doesn't allow 5.8? I know countries where 5.8 is limited to 25mW, but none where it's outlawed altogether. 2.4ghz fpv equipment has always been a bit obscure; for example I hacked some 2.4 nanny cams for FPV 10years ago. The results were far from stellar (modern 25mW 5.8 is probably better).

FWIW, I found the Herelink, which is a 2.4 setup available now (but HD and very heavy/spendy):

Not sure if you can find a set used, but there's also immersionrc duo 2400. Pretty sure you won't find any place with them still in stock though.

Gal Kremer is Israeli, AFAIK (some signs in his videos are in Hebrew) and he flies regular quads, presumably on regular vtx.  So I would make a point of researching that further.

okay after digging in some government websites I'm pretty sure 5.8Ghz actually is allowed in my country

Use of the 5.8GHz frequency on drones used to be illegal in Israel. We had a previous member on here called doronba who back in 2020 had all sorts of problems getting hold of 5.8GHz equipment but he managed to purchase hardware from abroad and just used it illegally. However, on 1st April 2021 the 5.8GHz frequency was legalised for use on drones in Israel, so the original restriction no longer applies.

Prior to April 2021 Gal Kremer was doing most of his flying illegally in Israel, but he lived out in the middle of nowhere so no-one was going to come after him. He has since moved to the USA.
