Was DJI recently sold?
#1
Ok, first let me say this is what I have HEARD. Please don’t ask me any questions regarding this.
Recently there was a “drone incident” (in the area of my work) and I was privy to some information. The source is VERY reliable, has had to recently become very familiar with drones / FAA, and is in constant contact with people on the federal level.
What I HEARD is DJI was “bought” by a BIG company and DJI is no longer supporting “tracking software”(whatever air armor / armor air or whatever)..
Some company is selling another “tracking software” that is $500,000 and incorporates “airport radar”.
I’m guessing some kind of remote ID on steroids..and the phrases such as “terror acts , safety, national security , high target probability “ were things I also heard..
What I can say is THIS, if you have /own a “camera” type drone, use it for business / non business .. get your 107, keep VERY GOOD records.. if u have any question GET A WAIVER…
If u do something your not supposed to.. don’t be surprised if ur contacted by SOME form of agency..

The device you are taking about DJI no longer supporting is DJI Aeroscope. It's a box of tricks costing more than $10,000 and sold to authorised companies who want to track any DJI drone that might be in the vicinity in order to view the telemetry data and get the owner details. It's true that DJI have discontinued it and authorised companies can no longer purchase one. I'm not sure if existing ones will still continue to work or if they require an active DJI subscription that DJI can just terminate if they choose to.

I not previously heard about the other $500K device you refer to.

I thought most people rooted their drones and switched all that stuff off. I know you can use the root method to wipe out the NFZ map functionality on most Mavics and Minis.

While the Drone-Hacks stuff disables the NFZ and height restrictions to name a couple, it doesn't disable the broadcast of DJI telemetry data that Aeroscope uses. Some of that data is needed by the DJI controller that is being used control the drone anyway so disabling the data isn't possible otherwise you will also lose safe control of the drone and/or telemetry data displayed on the screen of the controller and/or in the DJI GO / DJI Fly apps.
