Thanks to Hamster for turning me on to this cool little frame, and to Oscar for the nifty little MX MWC-32X flight controller! Parts list: Speck 80 frame: RotoriousFPV.com MX MWC 32-X 1s/2s FC: OverskyRC or Banggood RotorX RX1102-7800kv motors: RC-Drones MX-3A 1s ESCs: Hobby King 1.5mm 3-pin JST-ZH pigtails: Ebay RotorX RX2535W props (cut down to 2 inch): AirbladeUAV Quanum Elite micro cam/vtx (de-cased): Hobby King NanoTech 1s 500mAh 25-50C lipos: Hobby King Custom 3D printed motor mounts: Thingiverse The Speck 80 frame kit comes with a top plate and camera cage (which I did not use), and a nice flexible printed mount for the camera I chose. The MX MWC 32-X FC is neat but required some special consideration to work with the motors and frame. First of all, the motor/esc input plugs are 3-pin and requires ESCs work with only one power, one ground, and the signal. (The MX-3As do - there is also a 2s version of these that I will probably switch to eventually.) Also, the FC's hole spacing was slightly smaller than the mounting holes on the frame, so I filed the holes slightly toward the outside for a good fit. I decided to mount it inverted and it also needed to be rotated. I decided on 225 degrees to get the battery pigtail where I wanted. This meant that motors 2 & 3 crossed over under the FC. With the board inverted and rotated 225 degrees, that makes motor connector 3 point forward. I added M2 nuts on top of the board as spacers for the camera mount. I had soldered on a small pigtail to match the pigtail on the camera (instead of soldering the camera directly), so I could easily disassemble the whole thing later. Weight without battery is around 44 grams. Flying weight is 59 grams! I really like the looks of this little guy. Unfortunately, when attempting a hover test, motor three would not spin up. After tearing it apart and testing motor and esc (again), I discovered that port 3 on the board was not working. USB port also quit working (don't know if related or not). I have a new board on the way, and may go ahead and upgrade it to 2s. The weight without battery shouldn't change - the 2s ESCs are nearly identical. I will probably try it on the 1s first though, just to see.... EDIT: I think I probably burned that port myself. Early on, when I was testing motors, I burned out a motor because my mounts exposed too much screw and the screws touched the windings (I think). It could have been port 3 that I was testing on (not sure). The USB was still working after that though, so I'm not sure what happened there. Also, you'll want these: http://www.banggood.com/MU-3A-2S-Speed-C...00574.html • Posts: 236 Threads: 2 Likes Received: 66 in 45 posts Likes Given: 27 Joined: Jan 2016 Reputation: 17 I wonder if these will be suitable on 1S: www.banggood.com/4X-Racerstar-Racing-Edition-1103-BR1103-8000KV-1S-Brushless-Motor-For-100-120-RC-Mini-Multirotor-p-1072091.html?rmmds=search. But it shouldn't be too hard to rewind them for 2S. These ESCs are way overpriced :-( Also no info on their weight. • Posts: 391 Threads: 23 Likes Received: 50 in 41 posts Likes Given: 56 Joined: Feb 2016 Reputation: 8 Nice build, first one I've seen with a brushless system. But it shouldn't be too hard to rewind them for 2S. These ESCs are way overpriced :-( Also no info on their weight. I think those motors would work well (wish I'd seen them before the 1102s). The 1102s are 3.5 grams with wires. You would still need to make a mount for the Speck 80 though - the only holes on the frame are ~11mm apart. You'd also need press-fit props or some collet-style adapter. The MX-3A 1s ESC's I used are 0.38 grams without wires. I think the form factor of the MU-3A's are the same, so I expect the weight to be comparable. I agree about the cost. Depending on your flying style and prop-size, you could also exceed 3A (on 2s), but I doubt if I will push it that hard for long enough to burn. • Posts: 5,322 Threads: 673 Likes Received: 3,159 in 1,747 posts Likes Given: 2,032 Joined: Jan 2016 Reputation: 139 That looks really tempting! glad you found good use of the FC! I just noticed that Banggood has the same FC (different name) for less than Oversky. http://www.banggood.com/Micro-Scisky-MX-...57409.html It shows a picture with receiver, but not sure it comes with that. You can add your own tiny rx (there are basic indications of how at Oversky). (14-Oct-2016, 11:21 PM)Oscar Wrote: That looks really tempting! glad you found good use of the FC! If you want to buy a Speck 80, RotoriousFPV now has a web-site - went live today. http://rotoriousfpv.com/product/speck-80/ I posted a picture of this over on https://www.facebook.com/groups/RotoriousFPVGroup/ a couple of days ago. It got a good response, and it sounds like Jack is going to design a brushless version of the Speck 80. • Posts: 19 Threads: 4 Likes Received: 1 in 1 posts Likes Given: 0 Joined: Aug 2016 Reputation: 0 I want to build a copter like this. Can you help me to find 1-2S(both) FC, and need an FrSky receiver. Thanks! I think Jack over at rotoriousfpv (see links above) is currently prototyping a modified Speck80 based around the FuriousFPV Piko BLX FC and maybe some (as yet to be released) 2-in-1 stackable ESCs (also from FuriousFPV) with 1104 motors. You could wait and see what develops there. I am modifying mine to 2s using the flight controller mentioned in my original post and using the Racerstar 6A ESCs from banggood. (Not sure it's going to work yet - I'll post results when I'm done.) The Oversky FC can be modified for either 1s or 2s (or you can order pre-setup for which ever you want). Banggood carries these as well: http://www.banggood.com/Micro-Scisky-MX-...57409.html . These FC can also be modified to accept other receivers - they support PPM and SBUS with the adjustment of some solder pads. My replacement board just arrived a couple of days ago, so I'm going to test it on 1s first before I do the conversion to 2s. • Posts: 1,504 Threads: 83 Likes Received: 944 in 654 posts Likes Given: 2,142 Joined: Sep 2016 Reputation: 24 (05-Nov-2016, 09:15 PM)sloscotty Wrote: My replacement board just arrived a couple of days ago, so I'm going to test it on 1s first before I do the conversion to 2s. I got it rebuilt, tested, ran into another minor problem, and before I got it sorted out, Jack released the Speck 80 brushless frame mentioned in a previous post. So I decided to hold off. This is a lighter, stronger frame and is designed for 20 x 20 FC's (Pico BLX, Femto, etc) and up to 1105 motors. Mine should be here in a couple of days. Expect a full report by the end of the year (probably in a new thread). In the meantime, check out the Rotorious FPV Underground Group (you'll need to join and be approved). People are already starting their builds. (Jack released 3 different brushless frames.) • Posts: 42 Threads: 9 Likes Received: 2 in 2 posts Likes Given: 0 Joined: Aug 2016 Reputation: 0 If someone is interested in building brushless indoor quadcopter from scratch here is an interesting project to look into: http://fishpepper.de/projects/pepperf1sh/ It's definitely in top 3 on my projects list Cheers. • |
