One might say "that is not the same", but isn't it? Even though one can do something (and get away with it), does that make it right? It really isn't the same though. Anyone can operate any motor vehicle, regardless of size, on private property. The FAA, however, has declared, All your sky are belong to us. There is no private sky to retreat to. Well, indoors I guess. Probably because it's more or less impossible to fly FPV without breaking the law. You round up a spotter and check your weight/RID/permissions. You take off, fly around the 3' tall bush in your own back yard, and boom, you're breaking line of sight and the law... Jumping a dirtbike over your house is fine though. Same thing for shielded operations. Am I really expected to believe that other UAVs are going to be loading up the space under my trees in my yard? Think we've got bigger problems if that's the case. • Posts: 3,533 Threads: 265 Likes Received: 2,610 in 1,545 posts Likes Given: 3,893 Joined: Feb 2018 Reputation: 78 I will say this thread was very entertaining to read. But nothing new is being said, just the same grumbling and wringing of the hands. It is obvious many have ran to the safety of sub 250g. Sub 250g is all well and good for the various short range parts of the hobby, but I'm not a fan of the "fat whoops" for long range. As I have said many times, be smart, fly in remote places, i.e. low chances of witnesses, fly a couple batts, and then move to another spot or call it a day. and change locations often(new areas to fly are the best anyway). None of these regs change a damn thing for the long range hobbyist, even in a suburban area. Understand what the violations you are committing and the rules of evidence and levels of proof for the violation are. I'm not going into it again in this post as I have several times before. The level of investigation, evidence collection and burden of proof is substantial to make a case against you if they don't catch you in the act. So come on guys, quit sniveling, just be smart. Don't worry about what is right or wrong about your activity (you aren't hurting anyone, this isn't a moral issue, and these regs are just gov. overreach). Enjoy your hobby, knowing the odds of getting struck by lightening is much higher than getting handled by LE for drone violations. Krohsis, all good points HOWEVER.. being hit with a “fine” is far easier and minimal “proof” is required.. In a court of LAW, yes.. proof, investigation, is not worth their time..unless u do something REAL stupid and they want the issue to cause a impact.. like say..flying a drone during a major event like a NFL or MLB game.. Any one ever got a “citation” from a traffic camera? Doesn’t matter who was driving.. it didn’t go against the driving record of the operator.. it is the registered owner of the vehicle that has to pay the fine.. if not.. it gets added to the renewal But I agree, fly smart.. “Rip-n-Dip”… Posts: 3,533 Threads: 265 Likes Received: 2,610 in 1,545 posts Likes Given: 3,893 Joined: Feb 2018 Reputation: 78 (01-Aug-2023, 03:41 PM)Rob Axel Wrote: Krohsis, all good points HOWEVER.. being hit with a “fine” is far easier and minimal “proof” is required.. And yes you could get handled by LE, have to pay for an attorney, miss work etc. But the bottom line, most of these laws are civil laws and they still have to make their burden of preponderance which is "more likely than not" or 51%. Sounds easy, but isn't. The way they get those cold is catch them in the act. If that happens to someone, well, being stupid hurts. As we always said on the job, "we don't catch the smart ones". Ah hell, I'm going flyin with my big 10 inch! Cheers! Oh yeah, be careful about posting videos. Just saying. Posts: 185 Threads: 7 Likes Received: 40 in 32 posts Likes Given: 59 Joined: Mar 2023 Reputation: 3 I have about 10 ESP8266s that showed up the other day. I figure making some "drones" and having them fly 24/7 will give them something to do while I fly in my yard. Below the tree line. As I do daily. If I went up to my limit of 400' AGL, I would hit a plane flying over my house anyway. And B4UFLY "approved" my flight plan anyway, regardless that I am on the edge of the SFRA/FRZ, just telling me to "watch out" for dangers. The fact that there are too many apps to use just to stay legal, too many sites to peruse to stay legal, and too much conflicting information from the people making the laws, to stay legal. This shouldn't be a full time job to keep up with the laws. If cops aren't required to know the laws, how is the onus on us peons? • Posts: 3,533 Threads: 265 Likes Received: 2,610 in 1,545 posts Likes Given: 3,893 Joined: Feb 2018 Reputation: 78 (02-Aug-2023, 01:49 AM)sevro Wrote: • Posts: 771 Threads: 5 Likes Received: 443 in 325 posts Likes Given: 209 Joined: May 2021 Reputation: 14 • Posts: 4,073 Threads: 75 Likes Received: 2,549 in 1,858 posts Likes Given: 3,949 Joined: May 2021 Reputation: 121 Until the FAA updates their website with a new date or otherwise says its been pushed back, I’m gonna continue to look at the September date as my “no more flying above 250g” deadline. Dangerous operations. Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about. I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose. So what, if they push the date down a month, two, or even three. If just delays the inevitable. This is like a train that we have watched coming down the track, then at the last minute we jump onto the tracks, in front of the train, and yell "STOP". Well, the train might slow down a bit, but it is coming anyway and not much we can do about it. Remote ID has been 3 years in the making. Why have folks not gotten prepared? One would think that they would, at the very least, considered their options and how to approach this. I can't imagine any adult or business person who has a drone has not been following this or is just now hearing about it. Well, all of my quads are sub 250 gram with the notable exception of my Rescue Quad. Yeah, I only fly purely for my recreational enjoyment; FUN. So I am pretty much good to go. By the way, I agree with Lemony; I want to see it in writing. Hearsay just keeps the pot boiling. • Posts: 21,408 Threads: 595 Likes Received: 9,035 in 6,687 posts Likes Given: 1,428 Joined: Jun 2018 Reputation: 796 (03-Sep-2023, 11:07 PM)iFly4rotors Wrote: Yeah, some folks are just hopeful, however, I am not sure what that will get for them.
