New HD System from Fat Shark?
#76
Now we'll hear it's totally a coincidence that they bind with existing Vistas and AUs. But it's not DJI guys!

So, all the roasted chestnuts aside. Is DJI v2 still technically the best with all the refresh and latency stuff?

For highest frame-rate the current system seems to be the best. If you just care about image quality then this new system could be extremely promising potentially.

Some more evidence of a Caddx / WalkSnail connection. Below is the old Caddx logo. See what is on top of the word Whistling

Interesting enough, I ran into this logo trademark filed April 4th this year.

Alright so I did a bit more lite digging after dinner and it looks like Qingxiang Li is listed as a Vice President and signing authority for both Caddx and Walksnail, as well as the Attorney of Record.

The DJI person you found is also located in China and not too far from there.

JB just confirmed in a reply to a comment under his video that these new FatShark / WalkSnail goggles are only compatible with the FatShark / WalkSnail VTX's. There is no compatibility with existing DJI Air Units or Vistas.

So for anyone buying into this system they would have to start from scratch and buy the goggles for $600 (plus additional cost of the antennas which aren't included) and also the VTX's to go along with them. That actually makes this system more expensive than the current DJI FPV System just to get what is effectively a refreshed menu system and DisplayPort OSD, but also a lower refresh rate due to the restricted 90Hz screens. I don't count the 1080p capabilities because the 40+ms of latency induced by using that higher resolution will be unflyable for freestyle FPV, so most people are going to have to settle for using 720p. You would also need to trust that Caddx / WalkSnail have the ability and capabilities to fix all of the issues in what currently looks to be a fairly buggy system, and that's not something you want when flying FPV because it means the potential for a black screen / frozen image and the loss of your quad. Before anyone considers this system, FatShark / WalkSnail / Caddx need to demonstrate and prove that it's a completely stable system with all known bugs fixed / addressed.

Honestly makes no sense. If they just released firmware that allowed for these to be used with the existing Goggles with the current refresh rates/quality, and with newer Goggles with 1080p 60 as an option, along with using current stuff with the existing rates this would have been a huge hit. You'd get a new 25x25 board option, a different Goggle option, and one general ecosystem. I might have grabbed a pair of Goggles just to fly 1080p for scenic flights now and then (assuming they actually have the panels refreshing at 60hz for that mode), but keep the existing for my race/acro flying, and then have a second pair for spectators who don't get the 120fps anyway, or just use them to HDMI out as a spectator while being able to record DVR on the DJI goggles.

This means it won't support the current DJI FPV Transmitter, which a lot of people use due to not needed a receiver/antenna on the aircraft, and because it doesn't fail-safe as long as you have video.

Seems like a big miss. If they did that just to pretend to be disconnected from the existing technology/companies, they can give up the charade.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, flies like a duck, tastes like a duck…
Is it a NEW duck?

I've read some interesting plausible theories, a couple of which are below...
  1. The person behind WalkSnail is the original developer of the DJI FPV System and has now used their knowledge and skills to develop an independent system that is different but using the same techniques which is why it looks almost identical to the DJI FPV System, bar a change to the UI skin. If this is the case then DJI might still look at the system very closely to see if any of their IP was used or stolen.

  2. WalkSnail have reverse engineered the DJI FPV System (or used the margerine root exploit) and have then built a clone with a re-skinned UI without authorisation from DJI and unlocked / implemented some additional features in the process (1080p, DisplayPort OSD etc.). With WalkSnail effectively being a separate company from Caddx it would mean that if DJI sent in their lawyers, Caddx as a separate company would still be safe from any lawsuit. The only product that WalkSnail seem to have in their inventory is this new HD FPV System so WalkSnail might only exist as a separate company for that reason. The Caddx relationship with DJI would however still probably suffer as a result.

Either of the above scenarios pose a potential risk that DJI could wade in and shut down the product entirely rendering it an expensive brick, so it's something to keep in mind.

If WalkSnail / FatShark were completely transparent and honest about where the underlying technology came from, how if was developed, and if it is licensed from DJI instead of all this smoke and mirrors then this whole Poopstorm of conspiracy theories could have been avoided and people could then at least have some trust and confidence in the product and companies involved, especially when they are being asked to fork out $600-900 on the gear for a single quad setup. By lying or hiding things it makes people wonder what sort of company they are buying products from and what sort of support and assurances they might get so that things don't go belly up.

After watching Cricket's video, I just realised that the the profile shape and grey / white colouring of the FatShark Dominator HD goggles have been designed to look like a shark nose when you're wearing them (see time position 7:35 into his video HERE). So now you have a choice to either look like an alien (DJI FPV Goggles) or a shark (FatShark Dominator HD goggles) when flying one of the DJI based HD systems Big Grin

Compare the goggle profile to the image on Greg's top below to see what I mean Big Grin

I just don’t like all the “lack of information”.. and that they are “dangling a carrot” in front of everyone!
I swear I had to look at my calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st…

Pawel is giving his opinion about the FS HD DJI goggles.
He has some very interesting points.

I just watched it. What Pawel says makes more sense than most of the other theories currently out there. For anyone considering the "FatShark" / "WalkSnail" (DJI) system I would definitely listen to what he has to say. He also makes some interesting comments about the 1080p capabilities and what the reality of that probably is. The whole discussion starts at 6:20 into the stream and goes on for ~55 minutes.

Without a doubt, FatShark and WalkSnail are definitely both a bunch of liars about having spent the last 2 years developing "their own" system, and just like the botched Byte Frost announcement / release to try and counter DJI's new FPV System product at the time, this is clearly just another unfinished / rushed out product release to try and counter the newly announced HDZero goggles that Carl is due to release within the next 6 months. Pawel's advice is to NOT place any pre-orders for this FatShark (or WalkSnail Avatar) system due to the obvious instabilities it has and the likelihood that it will take much longer than the 2 months stated by FatShark to iron out all of the current issues the system still has, but to wait until the product has been properly finished and has some solid independent reviews that aren't from affiliates of Rotor Riot.

Bruce also has a very good / plausible theory about the FatShark / WalkSnail HD system which is similar to Pawel's. It's only a 10 minute long video so a nice concise summary...
