ExpressLRS - open source, low-latency, long range RC firmware

(17-Jun-2021, 12:55 PM)SnowLeopardFPV Wrote: Very nice work. That is probably the most comprehensive ELRS setup guide I've read Cool

I've seen a few reports of people getting some failsafes on some of the release candidate firmware versions of ELRS, even the latest V1.0.0 RC8 version, so there is clearly still a few bugs to be ironed out. I'm sure ExpressLRS will become more and more reliable as time goes on, but people just need to keep their eyes open and be aware of the risks of running unsupported Open Source software that is still relatively new and is constantly evolving, especially the non-final firmware releases. I probably wouldn't run an expensive quad out to a long distance on it just yet.

I also read something about improvements to the hardware, so it appears that the hardware is also still evolving to make it more reliable / stable.

I will probably think about jumping on the bandwagon myself once things level out and have stabilised Smile

Thanks Snow!

I worked til 4am last night to publish it, and already there's outdated info that needs to be updated. Apparently OpenTX nightly is no longer needed as it's made it to release candidate LOL Big Grin

Yea I think ELRS has a bright future. It performs great and is affordable. I got 6 receivers and they are only 10 quid each Big Grin And they are really tiny!

I was looking for additional information on how to best set RC SMOOTHING and ff_interpolate.

I use 868, and I guess it needs to be changed a bit.
how about ff_interpolate_sp = AVERAGED_2
and RC Interpolation Interval to 12ms (for 200Hz) ??

Sorry, I am not sure about the 900Mhz system.
I think you probably have to experiment different settings and check it in Blackbox, that's how people found good settings for the 2.4GHz system with 500Hz.

sure! it was however a point of departure and comparison!
I like to try .. practically I just do that! hahahahah  Big Grin

yes opentx 2.3.12 out of a couple of days makes the nightly useless!

I think the recommendation is just
Code:
set ff_interpolate_sp = ON
save
to keep ff smooth with minimal delay. AVERAGED_2 or AVERAGED_3 will just introduce additional delay and not make a difference in smoothing. You don't need to change rc_smoothing_derivative from defaults for 200Hz.

I did 4 quick tests,
correct me,
it seems best is with 12ms rc interpolation
if i put rc filter auto smoothnes 10 i see some ladders.
quite right?

can you see from the pictures?

Nice work, Oscar! Yep, it'll be half time job just keeping it up to date, its moving so fast. Since my last flight with expressLRS I have like four things to update. haha

Something looks off, but I'm not sure what. I'd ask on the ELRS Discord: https://discord.gg/dS6ReFY

They look smooth, but I expected the delay to be less. I guess it depends on your FF settings as well. If you're trying to eek every last bit of performance out of your system the guys on the discord can help, but I'm sure it will fly great as is!

ahhhh, ok I get it, no, I just try to make it smooth! and now it is!
I really like the feeling of flight

the delay I have not measured, but very zoomed in the image. thank you!!!

HGLRC have now also jumped on the bandwagon with a new module. It looks a bit nicer than the Happymodel modules and makes use of a USB-C connector instead of micro USB, plus it has an XT30 socket for optional external power which is a nice touch...

I have been testing the Happy Model 2.4 GHz Tx module together with the EP1 receiver for two days now. I must say that I am absolutely thrilled. While so far GPS rescue has always been activated after FS, with ExpressLRS I have to activate it manually, because DJI VTX is long gone. The range is excellent even on a 500 Hz framerate. Any drops in RSSI below -100 dBm are always caused by short-term inappropriate orientation of the antennas. I test the horizontal polarisation for two days, but when turning the model, there is always a problem with a decrease of more than 10 dBm. The photo shows the horizontal polarisation of the EP1 receiver antenna, I think that the horizontal polarisation cannot be done better so that the battery does not shield.

Guys, tell me how to do good vertical polarisation on this quad. If the antenna is placed close to the frame, the frame itself with the battery will shield ... in this, the 900 MHz antenna has the advantage, it is longer and extends beyond the frame and the battery.

Today I tried vertical polarisation on both sides. So far, I only attached the antenna with electrical tape. The result is about +9 dBm obtained on the same test spot ... and that's a really big difference from horizontal polarisation. I also tried vertical polarisation on the transmitter and horizontal on the quad. In this case, the range is smaller, but when turning the quad back, the dBm reduction is smaller than from purely horizontal polarisation.

I confirmed the assumption. Now all I have to do is figure out how to attach the antenna so that its bottom doesn't go into the propellers, an attachment that will look acceptable and will be durable.
