Unflyable range with new build
#1
I recently built my first drone and have been facing issues with extremely poor fpv range. I initially used a Akk nano3 vtx and on 25mw it's literally unflyable and signal dropped out at just 10-12m. I bumped up the power to 200mw and the range extended to about 50-60m. I thought the vtx could be a dud so I replaced it today with a HGLRC zeus nano but I still have the same problem.

On 25mw, I could barely take off and fly ahead. I tried on 100mw and I can get around 60-70m before image starts breaking up. I have checked the band and both my goggle and vtx are on the same Raceband 2 with same frequency.

The goggle's I'm using is a Eachine VR009 with one pagoda antenna and other default rubber sticky antenna. I really cannot think of a way to diagnose the issue. Any suggestion is welcome.

Other specs:  mamba 12000kv motor, NamessRC 412t AIO, 2S battery.

Are you definitely using antennas with the correct type of connector on?

If your goggles have SMA connectors on them (with a hole in the centre) then the antennas also need to have an SMA connector on them (with a pin in the centre).

If your goggles have RP-SMA connectors on them (with a pin in the centre) then the antennas also need to have an RP-SMA connector on them (with a hole in the centre).

I just checked again. Both goggles and Antennas are RP-SMA. Goggles with pin and antenna with hole at centre.

OK, so that is any potential issue with the antenna connections eliminated.

Are you MANUALLY tuning your goggles to the exact same band / channel / frequency as the VTX is transmitting on. Using auto search / auto tune in the goggles is prone to issues because it doesn't always lock onto the exact same channel as the signal is being broadcast on, and even if it is just a few MHz off either side of the actual broadcast frequency, that can cause premature signal loss and range issues.

If you are not in pitmode on the vtx and replacing the VTX or the antenna's did not make much difference then it may also be the VRX module inside your goggles.

The only way to be sure the internal VRX in the goggles is functioning properly is to try another quad.

Did you autoscan the channels or manually select them both on the VTX and Goggles?
