The Future of Analog/Digital |
22-Jul-2020, 12:59 PM Well, let me be clear; I am not questioning the quality, nor that it would be really nice to have, nor that it is the wave of the future (although pretty far out as I see it). At this point, it is just too expensive to experiment with something that might not even work for me. Now, the primary issue for me (and it is a big one) is the goggles; extremely expensive with almost no options, certainly no lower cost options and no competition, but even that is less of concern than my eyeglasses. I can not wear my glasses with most goggles, especially the thin, dual screen, variety (like FatShark), period. Even most "box" goggles can be challenging, if not useless. At this point, the Viper goggles are the only ones that fit comfortably while wearing my own glasses which allow me to use different strengths when I need to. I know that some goggles have diopter options, but I am not sure I could get the strength that I need. Additionally, it just means extra cost and one set may not be enough. I don't know if DJI has diopters, but still, this option is way to expensive to experiment with. For me, the uncertain results and value does not justify the cost. So, if I can't see it clearly, it has no better value than analog (for me). Yes, goggles are a pain because you can't "try before you buy"; nowhere that I know of. Also, I hate trying to use a monitor attached to the transmitter; the sun, the glare, the visibility makes these things horrible for me to use. Even if you start where you think you can see (down here in the bright sun those are few), one shift and the d*mn thing appears to be black (you know, just like a lost video signal). No thank you. I am sure that in time, in the digital FPV world, things will get better (like TV...yeah I have a story there for another day - @voodoo, yes I remember...black & white and only 3 blurry channels - how about sub-standard, but we watched them anyway). Eventually, there will be competition, lower prices, smaller components, more options, and a variety of goggles (some I might even be able to use). At this point, however, progress appears to be slow on that front and may take (many) years. When the price drops and there are goggles that I can actually use; then we reconsider. Am I the only person with this perspective Maybe....or Maybe Not 22-Jul-2020, 01:21 PM (This post was last modified: 22-Jul-2020, 01:21 PM by SnowLeopardFPV.) You can wear your own glasses with the DJI FPV Goggles because the space inside them is big enough to do so, so you don't need diopters. I think DJI purposely designed the goggles to be larger than strictly necessary for that very "feature". I'm sure it was no accident. 22-Jul-2020, 02:55 PM Thanks Snow. Well now, that does change things. I need to find somewhere that I can try on a set ; see how they fit and feel with my glasses. If that works, then I just need to see about the finances (yeah and figure out how to justify it to my wife ). It is still a little out of my budget right now, but you just pushed it up on the list. Being able to wear the goggles changes it to purely cost; still an issue, but workable in the future. Ah, the wheels are turning Thanks Again 22-Jul-2020, 04:08 PM (22-Jul-2020, 02:55 PM)iFly4rotors Wrote: Thanks Snow. The DJI store has a 14 days return policy. And 30 days if you are a select member. You can buy, try and return if you don't like. I would double with other people on how their experience went before going this route. 22-Jul-2020, 04:11 PM (This post was last modified: 22-Jul-2020, 04:12 PM by SnowLeopardFPV.) If you look in the Live Chat window (link below), you will see that the boss made a comment about this very thing on 19th July. So straight from the horses mouth It's also mentioned in numerous YouTube videos as well. https://intofpv.com/index.php?action=sho...566#sid566 The biggest problem with digital is for people who have a garage full of analogue quads, some of which might not be very old. What do you then do with all of those because I doubt they will get used (much) again once you've experienced the beauty of a digital image. You could of course upgrade some or all of your quads to digital where that is a possibility, but that's a very expensive and time consuming task. I think this is probably one of the reasons that some people are reluctant to switch, because it's true that ignorance is bliss and they don't want all of their existing expensive quads just ending up as permanent wall mounted ornaments. 22-Jul-2020, 05:06 PM Snow, thanks or the link ; very interesting. Counting my new Katana-LR4 build, I only have five open prop/brushless quads and about a half a dozen tiny whoop class quads with cameras. On the one hand, that is not too many. On the other hand, I likely wouldn't want to upgrade any of them; the brushed motor whoops just don't have the power or the space and there just isn't any room in the fuselage of my open prop quads to hold the digital gear (except maybe the Katana frame, but it would be tight if even possible). The GEPRC Phantom frame is just too small for the size of the digital package; everything is a tight pack in there already. For me, going digital would only be with a new BNF that already came with digital or a new build. I do have a new "secret" project in the concept/design stage; I will now allow space for a digital hardware option. This build is quite a ways out so I have some time to investigate, work out some details, factor in the weight, and work out the finances. Also, I would only use it for the video, not the flight controller. Voodoo, that is interesting about the trial period / return policy , however, I am generally reluctant to do that with such a high price product . I will do some research and see if I can find a store close enough to take a little trip; see if I can try some on. RDQ is not too far, so I might try them. I'm not ready to pull the trigger just yet anyway. I will do more research and see where we go. Digital is now on my list of options (and it wasn't before). Thanks I'm about to buy the system next week or so. So after that I can share my opinion as someone who has been flying analogue only, using quite old Skyzone SKY02 and only average or below average quality cameras (well except Runcam Phoenix, that one is great). Let's see if my mind gets blown. I do have to say I'm quite hyped now I'm also getting 2x TrueRC X-AIR right from the beginning to get the most out of the system (but the cost, oh boy). I'm solving the analogue issue with buying the Digiadapter that Oscar reviewed and recommended as the best solution (again, the priiiice). I have an Eachine pro58 module lying somewhere in the parts bin, so I'm gonna flash that with the Pirx firmware and that should get me going. So in few weeks time, I'll be back with the results. Expectations are high 22-Jul-2020, 08:37 PM I have a feeling there will also be a few more members from the forum who will soon be jumping onto the digital age bandwagon with the DJI gear. FatShark are unfortunately taking too long to bring their product to market, and when they eventually do I think it will sadly fall below what DJI have already had out for a year. 24-Jul-2020, 04:15 PM (22-Jul-2020, 08:37 PM)SnowLeopardFPV Wrote: I have a feeling there will also be a few more members from the forum who will soon be jumping onto the digital age bandwagon with the DJI gear. That is what happened with the orqa goggles. I don’t want to buy the dji system too early because it’s in the midpoint of the product life cycle. I want to move to digital. I read rumors that dji was getting closer to releasing next gen goggles. I am waiting on the next gen dji system to make the move to digital. 24-Jul-2020, 04:50 PM (24-Jul-2020, 04:15 PM)MH1980 Wrote: I want to move to digital. I also see a lot of references to v2 goggles but no one has yet been able to post a credible source much less even a dubious source. It's always just, "I heard a from a friend who has this barber who heard from his plumber that ..." 24-Jul-2020, 05:00 PM (24-Jul-2020, 04:15 PM)MH1980 Wrote: That is what happened with the orqa goggles. I don’t want to buy the dji system too early because it’s in the midpoint of the product life cycle. The next generation of DJI FPV Goggles are at least 6 months away, probably longer. You only need to look at the product lifecycle and history of all of DJI's other products to see the pattern, and the FPV market is just a minute percentage of DJI's whole business portfolio, so any resources they have (and they have less now because a lot of DJI staff got laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic) will be getting diverted to their other more profitable product lines. DJI also have a history of milking every last penny out of one generation of a product before they release the next generation of the same, and their current FPV Goggles are still selling like hot cakes, (even more so with FatShark dragging their heels on Shark Byte), so all the while that is happening you won't see a new version. This happened with the Mavic 2. It was ready for release to market months before they actually launched it, but the Mavic 1 was still selling well so they held off launching the Mavic 2 so they could continue to make as much money out of the Mavic 1 while there was still demand for it. DJI never release two products close to each other even from different product lines, and there are strong rumours that the Mavic 3 will launch in September. So don't expect any new version of the DJI FPV Goggles until January 2021 at the very earliest, if that. One other thing to keep in mind is that DJI never release a new generation of a product unless it has ground breaking technological changes to the hardware. All the time that they can keep the original version running with just firmware updates they will do so, and one thing they are clever at doing is making their hardware future proof so they can unlock new features just with firmware releases, and while they are able to do this they won't release a new version of a product. If any sales of the DJI FPV Goggles appear, then my advice would be to jump straight on it. 24-Jul-2020, 05:01 PM (22-Jul-2020, 08:37 PM)SnowLeopardFPV Wrote: FatShark are unfortunately taking too long to bring their product to market, and when they eventually do I think it will sadly fall below what DJI have already had out for a year. I did bite the bullet and send HDZero an email to get an update. All I got back was "Thanks for your asking. VTX is on the final testing stage. And it should be ready very soon." lolllll oh well. So much for that. 24-Jul-2020, 05:07 PM (24-Jul-2020, 05:01 PM)the.ronin Wrote: I did bite the bullet and send HDZero an email to get an update. All I got back was "Thanks for your asking.
