1) If I select a profile in configurator and save - is that the active profile?
2) Is there any way to tell when out in the field? (I dont use and dont really want to set up a transmitter switch)

If you just want a quick adjustment of PIDs, use the sticks to enter the OSD. (YAW left + Pitch up). Then adjust PIDs, then hit Save + Exit at bottom.
If you want to get a bit more in-depth tuning, I have just started using the Speedy Bee Adapter to have full access to everything in Betaflight, but on my iPhone. It works great for tuning in the field. I have been using it a lot lately.

I'm using DJI/Nebula, pid profile name doesn't seem to show in the osd. Probably just one of those things dji doesn't support

0 NB: Profile x on the Betaflight Configurator PID Tuning tab is Profile x - 1 on the Configurator CLI, which is Profile x on the Betaflight OSD Menu.
E.g.
PID Tuning tab Profile 1 = CLI Profile 0 = OSD Menu Profile 1.
