[NEW PRODUCT] Original Prusa MINI 3D Printer @ $349
#1
Just announced today. I like the modern colour LCD screen. I guess this will appear on the i3 MK4 when it eventually comes out so I hope they make it available as an upgrade for the previous generation of i3 printers.

Less than half the price of the i3 MK3S at $349 + shipping.

Was thinking of waiting for touchscreen and WI-FI. Hopefully in MK4. And hopefully you can also upgrade.

Yes, it's a shame the one on the MINI is just has a colour screen and not actually a touchscreen like on the SL1, but I guess it's a step in the right direction. I actually quite like controller and LCD display on the i3 MK3S for it's simplicity factor which does the job it needs to and which I find fairly intuitive, but having a user interface like the SL1 would be the icing on the cake Smile

They're not making my life any easier Big Grin
I was decided to buy the i3 MK3S for myself for Christmas, and now this comes out. I'm pretty sure that for my needs, the mini would be just enough and work for all my needs. The price is of course very tempting factor too. One thing that makes me hesitate, though, is the bowden drive. I know that printing TPU is definitely possible with bowden drive extruder, but direct drive is simply a better choice for that. Oh well, I have some thinking to do now.

Plenty of people have no issues printing TPU on the bowden equipped Ender 3's with a minor modification to the extruder assembly.

Knowing how much attention to detail Prusa put into their products, I wouldn't be at all surprised if printing TPU on the MINI "just works" without any modifications.

For anyone who is potentially interested and wants to know a few more details, Thomas Sanladerer interviewed Josef Prusa about the new MINI at ERRF 2019.

I'm very interested in this. I used to have a Prusa i3 clone, it was ok but took a lot of fiddling with to get a decent print. I believe things have changed a lot since that older design, and the Prusa Mini's print size is sufficient for my needs.
I have a birthday and Christmas coming up in December, and I'm already dropping hints to my wife...

This is very interesting but someone at home does not want me to get a 3D printer.. Big Grin

Guess I need to move out of the apartment and buy a house before I can get a printer, but this is exactly what I would get. Small, high quality and good support from the manufacturer

The largest thing I've printed on my i3 (nothing related to this hobby) has been 135mm wide, so that would have easily fitted on the bed of the MINI. Plus you still have the option of orientating the object diagonally on the bed if it's a narrow object which won't fit on the bed width ways.

If I didn't already have an i3 then I think I would be really tempted by the MINI. The small footprint would probably have suited my needs a bit better than the i3 as it would have left me with a bit more free space in my tiny box room.

And don't think that printing TPU using a direct drive extruder is necessarily any easier than with a bowden, because I'm having quite a few nightmares at the moment trying to print TPU with my i3, and I still haven't yet managed to successfully print anything in TPU that is usable or which I am happy with the outcome of Sad

That's discouraging @SnowLeopardFPV. Is it software/settings issues, these things are supposed to be pushbutton? You sound like you know quite a bit already. I'm hot on one of these things so have been looking-over your experience in the forums. Have been looking at a Lulzbot Mini 2 but the Prusa seems like such great value.

Printing PLA is pretty much push a button, yes (as in you can just leave the default PLA profile slicer settings as they are without changing anything) and the print comes out to an adequate and acceptable quality. Of course, you can mess around with fine tuning the settings if you want to try and get a concourse looking print, but generally you don't need that unless it's something you want to put in your show piece cabinet.

TPU on the other hand is a completely different animal and even having a direct drive extruder, I've still not yet managed to do a successful print in TPU. See THIS post.

Another interview with Josef by 3D Printing Nerd. Prusa have already had over 1000 orders placed for the MINI in the first 24 hours of its release so if you want one in time for Christmas then you'd better get your orders in soon Big Grin

Oh well, just ordered one for myself.

Kinda hope they could prioritise my order since I'm gonna pick it up in person from their HQ in Prague, but probably not Big Grin

Nice Thumbs Up I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed. And they come already pre-built too so there is no having to spend 8-10 hours building the thing Big Grin

Did you order both sheets or just the PEI one? And filament sensor, or not?

When you visit, make sure you ask for a tour of the factory. I think they do actually do that if you ask them Cool

I took the whole package - both sheets and the filament sensor. It's not much to pay extra and the value is there.

The pre-built thing is kinda good, because I know I can't mess it up and I can start playing with it right away, but at the same point I'll miss the feeling of satisfaction from building the whole thing from the ground up and seeing it working Big Grin

But yeah, if I have time I'd definitely try asking them. It looks pretty impressive from the videos, must be super cool seeing it in person Smile
