Motor under water
#1
Hey

I see a lot of people diving on the surface of the sea. Does this affect the Motor ,FC ,ESC , etc?

motors arent really bothered by water, as the windings are covered in an enamel. FC/ESC/VTX's have to be waterproofed in order to handle getting wet

It's not the actual water which is the issue. It's the impurities and other minerals in it. If you fly over the sea, salt water is both conductive and corrosive so will kill a quad. You can protect some of the electronics with conformal coating but you can only do so much because It's impossible to coat everything.

People who fly over the sea should really rinse their quad in distilled water after a flying session to get rid of any salt because that will corrode parts of the quad over time if left. You will always get some salt spray onto the quad which will be impossible to avoid.

If you're planning to fly over the sea I would dedicate one particular quad for that task and expect it to eventually die.

If you happen to crash a quad into the sea and are lucky enough to be able to retrieve it, most of the electronics will likely be a write-off and certainly not something you could continue to trust.

Do all engines have enamel on them?

Yes, the internal wirings do, or the tightly coiled windings would short out. Distilled water will not attack the coating but minerals like salt will.

Also, don't forget that while the windings themselves are enamel coated, where the enamelled wire is then joined (soldered) to the flexible motors wires, that part is bare metal (copper wire and solder).
