Meteor75 - camera upgrade?
#1
Question
Hi,

I've now been flying this whoop for the past 3 weeks or so and if I where to knit-pick on it it would be the camera.  There are two things I'm not keen on them, the camera fov (a bit to much distortion from its wide angle), and its low light performance.

The fisheye effect is kind of tolerable but the low light performance not so much, to the point I'm considering upgrading it for something better.

With this in mind, would you have any recommendations of cameras which I could upgrade to were I could have some improvement on the low light and prefferablynot have fisheye? (also compatible with the drone in question, I don't mind having to change the canopy)

thx

Not sure if it will fit or weight difference.. but the best small camera I have found is the baby ratel..and low light isn’t a problem.. have it on my Tinyhawk freestyle..

Thx for the suggestion Rob. It does seem to be a bit heavier than the stock one, almost double actually, so may not be the best option if I want to keep wight down.

Do you get much distortion with it (fisheye) ?

I don’t know if you can squeeze it in there or not with your current canopy, but the Caddx Ant Lite might work for you. I think your current cam is 13mm x 11mm and the Ant Lite is 14mm x 14mm.

Pretty sure that it’s the exact same camera as the Caddx Ant nano, just without the screw hole case.

If you want to see how it flies at night, the flight video about 1/3 of the way down the page below is the Ant nano. Some curving distortion on the edges, not noticeable to me in flight. I think this was a 16:9 version, and this is crappy dvr from my goggles, so it looks a bit better through your actual eyeballs when you’re flying.

Thx Lemonyleprosy. That one seems like a better fit for it and its a solid contender. I'll do a few more searches in case something else is out there, but this might be the winner, might have to swap the canopy with something that fits that one, but hopefully it won't be a hassle.

The video from your drone looks way better than what I get on my current camera. I wouldn't be able to fly under those conditions with it given the amount of grain I'd get on the image.

I just got a new drone and it came with the ant nano, and the difference is crazy. I did a comparison on the underground carpark I fly sometimes and it was like night and day difference. Unless I find something else, this will be the one, albeit probably the lite version..

I’m a fan of the ants. I’ve got a pile of them I picked up dirt cheap when someone was selling off all of their analog gear after they switched to digital.

They’re light, cheap, and have more than acceptable video quality for me.

For tiny things it’s my preferred camera. For larger things I’m a fan of the Baby Ratel like Rob. It does even better in low light than the ant.

Anyhow, apparently the only real difference between the ant, ant lite, and ant lite FPVCycle edition is weight, lens mount, and lens. The ant (non-lite) is the only one with screw mounts, which I prefer so that I can easily change the camera angle, and it’s only 0.3g heavier.

Good to know about the Ratel, when I do start using bigger drones I'll keep those in mind.

The option to move the camera angle would be a plus for sure, if I find a canopy with the vtx mount on them (for the original vtc that comes with the drone) and the camera hole I'll go for them too.

On another note... The VTX from the meteor comes with the 3 pin plug (jst 08 I think or something like that), the ants come with a connector on the camera end only and bare cables on the vtc end. Are there cables for the ant with connectors on both ends?
When looking at the picture on the vtx, it seems there are pads on the other side of the connector. Could I perhaps then just solder the cables there directly and keep the connectors on the board?

You could get a set of these and make your own:

Or you could clip the cable off of your current cam, but that might annoy you later if you want to use that cam for something else and now need to add a connector and/or extend the wires.

Or yeah, you could just solder straight to the board if you’re comfortable soldering tiny things. The connector pins stick out a bit on the lens side so you could just attach there.

Also, some double sided foam tape works well for sticking your vtx on top of your fc or up in your canopy. Hot glue works too, but it’s heavy and the vtx can get pretty hot- haven’t had one melt the hot glue yet, but I’m sure it’s possible.

Thx for the tips.

I didn't think of the foam tape or glue, given how hot that thing gets I was worried if I covered it with something it could get damaged.

So do you reckon I could maybe cover the vtx with a shrink tube and then use the tape or glue onto the canopy? Or would this then be too much for the heat? This would definitely open up a lot of possibilities..

cheers

You could give this a shot:
https://www.racedayquads.com/products/be...f406&_ss=r

Is says it’s for the eos cam, but eos is 14x14 just like the ant nano. Screw holes so you can adjust your camera angle, says it has a vtx mount inside- but I don’t know if any of those holes to mount the vtx will line up with the holes in yours.
Dangerous operations.

Oh, I'd seen that one but I missed that it had the holes for the vtx. Chances are the they will work with my vtx as its from betafpv as well, at least one screw should go and I can reinforce with the tape as you mentioned before.

Thx for the help once again. Smile
