ISDT Q8 keeps restarting?
#1
I just upgraded my charger to the Q8 with this power supply:
https://www.getfpv.com/toolkitrc-adp100-...b3EALw_wcB

It's worked well for the past week, but now I'm charging four 1300mah 6s packs at 5A and it just reboots after 20 minutes or so.  The power supply gets very hot too.  Is my charger or power supply faulty?

You are likely overloading the charger. It is only rated 100W. You are at the charger upper limit with what you are doing charging. Try decreasing the current down to 3-4A. If it is still heating up, you probably have bad unit. If it works, then my theory might be right. Also worth given getfpv an email to see what they say.

I think I understand - so since it's 20V and I'm charging at 5A, I'm doing 20x5=100V which is the limit for this supply, and it's likely shutting off to prevent overload?

I will try at 4A.

You got it. I think you made a typo. 100Watt not 100V.

I will try at 4A.

But the output you're setting it for at 6s (peaking at 25.2 volts x 5 amps) is just over 125 watts. Also what what kind of efficiency is lost going up in volts from 20v to full 6s voltage. Hence the overheating.

At 4s with the same charge rate for 4 batteries and you'd be fine.

I shouldn't have cheaped out on the power supply. Maybe I can return this one and get the 400W one that Oscar recommended.

Maybe consider getting one of those 800W, or 1000W server PSU from eBay, they are dirty cheap (like $15-20) and super powerful Smile
Search for the model name of the PSU on Youtube and you should find tutorials on how to convert them for 12V output PSU Smile Usually they just need to have some pins bridged with a piece of wire.

Thank you Oscar, I'll look into it. I'm very nervous working on electrical stuff - parallel charging is nerve wracking enough as I'm always afraid of burning my house down even with all the precautions Smile

Yes I can totally relate!
I constantly check the packs during charging just to see if they are getting warm (which is a sign of bad lipo).
that's why I really like field charging, just to minimize the risk of charging inside the house Smile
