First quad question

Still practicing on simulator, not going to build one any time soon, so I learn stuff. As my first one I would like to build the smallest but brushless drone. And the idea is to use a good FC, radio and FPV components, with only esc's, pdb and motors being replaceable when I'm going to upgrade from tiny size to 210.

So the question is, is it worth to use runcam Split 2 at this point if I want also record my flights, or if a tiny brushless drone capable of using an external action cam? If yes, then which motors should I look at? I doubt 11xx motors can handle that.

Is this for a 2 incher brushless? Search for my build log for a frame called "Ashigaru" as I experiment with various configurations for a 2 inch, 2S using 1103's with a focus on discrete HD cinematic footage (not really acro). I look at both using a Insta360 Go and an onboard split HD cam (Runcam Micro I think it was).

that doesnt match to well, a good 5inch capable board is more heavy, there are better matching electronics for micros - forget about switching ;-) its an addiction and you wont take your first love apart later xD
i would suggest to just build your perfect micro and build a 5inch quad from the scratch later.

runcam split 2 is outdated, doesnt match a micro quad.

THIS!

I keep thinking about taking my 5" components off my GepRC Mark4 frame and putting them into a new 5" frame. So I can build a new quad without having to spend much money.

But that Mark4 was my first quad. I learned to fly on that quad, learned to crash on that quad, learned to build on that quad.

I just can't get myself to take it apart! Wink

Eventually if I break the frame I will, but otherwise I just can't do it.  Not to my first.  It is on a new stack, but original everything else from my first ever FPV flight.  Still flies amazing to this day.

As to the original question, I would just get a good 3" quad and not worry about future quads.  Micro quads normally have different mounting hole patterns than 5" quads.  Micros use 16x16 or 20x20 while 5" will normally use 30x30 boards which are too big for micros.

I would grab yourself something like a crux3 and some 2s batteries, or a GepRC Phantom and some 2s or 3s batteries.

As for recording flights, I wouldn't worry about that for a while.  You aren't going to be able to fly well enough to be worth recording anyway. Wink And that's not an insult, we all started off the same way.  Flying these things is a LOT harder than it looks in cool Freestyle videos on youtube.  I remember being SHOCKED at how hard it was at first; they made it look so easy in the videos!

1. What Mr Solo said. Buy/build 2 quads (in case of crash a spare). Focus on flying. Focus on small smooth corrections. The more *flow* the better you are.

2. We've all been there. Oh Ill just take camera from this one, and use spare motors and temporarily use receiver from...

Yes its only a few wires. But tucking in cables and securing just so is a hassle. Just buy another receiver or camera. Its OK. You dont need to be anxious. or ashamed. Realize that having multiple drones is OK.

Hi KarelSoel,

Thinking  Now here is a thought {it is what I did and many other do as well}.

The two most important components are the transmitter {radio remote controller} and
the googles. These items will last a long time.

If you are on a simulator then you might already have a transmitter. If not..

I would strongly consider a RadioMaster TX16S.

The Eachine EV800D goggles are very good and reasonably priced at around $ 100 USD.

Start with small Bind aNFly quads...maybe whoops or one of the small open prop quads.
The ones with whoops or prop guards are a little safer, but just as fun especially indoors.

For a small quad, my favorite is the 2.5 inch GEPRC Phantom for about $ 140 USD.
This is a nice little quad that is fun to fly and is pretty durable as well. I have had two of
them and have built a couple of clones.

However, there are now a whole lot of small open prop quads from the major vendors.
Flywoo makes quite a variety, iFlight has several, EMAX has some, and many others.

Buy, Bind, Fly, Have Fun.  This is how I learned to fly {no I didn't have a simulator}
I learned to fly by flying for REAL. My GEPRC Phantom and my EMAX TinyHawk Freestyle survived  Wink

You will end having many, many, quads of various sizes for various purposes.

High Five
