ESCs won't even power on
#1
A friend of mine has had a string of bad luck since he started FPV a few months back, and gave me a bag with some parts that don't work.  Among those parts are 4 Airbot Wraith 32 v2 ESCs.  I've been trying to get into learning to fix stuff where I can instead of buying new parts so this is practice for me.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32971264288.html

Anyway, I hooked the ESCs one by one to a power supply and fed them 8 volts at .5A, but they don't even light up.  I followed Dronemesh's video on testing mosfets and out of all 4 ESCs, only one had continuity, which turned out to be due to a missing capacitor on the other side, which I then replaced (one of the boards is pretty noticeably damaged so that's the donor).  So even now that I get no continuity on the mosfets, nothing powers up.

I've been watching a bunch of videos and it seems most of them deal with diagnosing mosfets but little else.  Can anyone offer any advice?

What are you using as an indication to determine whether or not they are powering up? Are they connected to a standalone voltage source applied directly to them or are they also connected to an FC? Maybe post a photo of your test rig to show how you are connecting them.

I have a standalone power supply clamped to the positive and negative leads, and the indicators I'm using are the LEDs on both sides, which do not light up. I'll get a photo when I get home.

By default the LEDs don't light up. If you want them to illuminate then you need to configure them to do so in BLHeliSuite32 with the colour of your choice.

Below you can see the "LED Control" setting in the top right. You set each of the 3 rectangles to either Red, Blue, Green, or OFF to control the overall colours of the RGB LEDs on the ESC. In the example configuration below they are at the default setting of OFF.

Ok. He's telling me some were programmed to light and some weren't. But shouldn't they at least chime when they power up?

I'm going to have to find a PDB and FC or something to wire these ESCs to, as I've never used single ESCs before.

Only if you have motors attached. The start-up sound comes from the motors.

I use the same ESCs on one of my quads with a PDB. The Holybro Tekko 32 version which are identical to the Airbot Wraith 32 V2's...

Oh, for crying out loud, and I knew that...*facepalm*...sorry, I got a lot on my mind.

So at the very least I should be able to wire a spare motor to see if there's some sort of connection.

Also, dang - that's a clean build and a really good build thread!
