ELRS 2.4 RECEIVER options
#1
hello all,

i would like to get user feedback on possible ELRS 2.4 dual/diversity receivers. i see the HM EP1 dual TCXO, radiomaster RP4TD true diversity. both of these being dual receivers, not antennas.

there is also antenna diversity with the radiomaster RP3V2. i know there are other brands some more popular than others.

i do recall chancing upon a thread here where there are issues with the radiomaster dual and in the same also mentions that the HM or betafpv variants fare much better. but when i checked with an HM pilot regarding their stuff he swayed me to choose radiomaster! although the guy does mostly proximity flying i did not dig deeper into his sentiments.

now i am wanting to base my decision from actual user feedback instead. cheers!

What size craft are they going on and what type of flying are you doing?

Here's how I would rank the ELRS receivers:

1. True Diversity Receivers - Have two full RF chains, can receive from both antennas simultaneously. All have PA/LNAs (power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, increase telemetry output to 100mW and amplify the received signal). Can also work in Gemini mode with a Gemini TX (eg BetaFPV SuperG, Jumper T-20 Gemini)

Examples:
BetaFPV SuperD
BetaFPV SuperP
HappyModel EP1 Dual (TCXO)
Radiomaster RP4TD

2. Antenna Diversity Receivers - Have one RF chain connected to two antennas via a switch.

Matek R24D
Radiomaster RP3

3. PA/LNA Receivers - One antenna, but have a PA/LNA.

Examples:
BetaFPV Nano

4. Standard receivers - Smallest, 17mW telemetry output.

Examples:
HappyModel EP1/EP2
BetaFPV Lite
Radiomaster RP1/RP2

For a long range craft or something you want to ensure the best possible signal, I recommend a true diversity receiver. The BetaFPV SuperD is available for less than $20 and is an excellent option.

For flying where you don't need two antennas but still want to maintain the best possible telemetry, something with a PA?LNA like the BetaFPV Nano is great.

For smaller builds or things that won't be flown long range, the tiny EP1/EP2 style receivers are perfect.

I use the dipole style, non diversity boards pretty much exclusively. I never could do with the ceramic tower antennas or flat antenna. I also don't fly very far (generally). On the dipole / ufl style boards and the SPI AIO based implementations I've never had an issue out to maybe 500-600m, but in fairly open environments with very few obstacles. Saying that i have flown them in a couple of complex bandos with lots of stone, brick and concrete without any issues too, but not 500m away, like 200-300m max.

Settings wise I use 250hz, 1:32 ratio, 500mW and Dynamic On, on ELRS 2. YMMV on ELRS 3 and V-22 is your best bet for that info. I don't have/use ELRS 3. Wink

It would be cool if you told us what your usage case is.

i did not get any specifics on the quad and type of flying with reference to the issues of HM receivers. so unless anyone here can validate this i suppose any of thei offerings should be good to go.

i suppose going for the true diversity is the obvious choice here for LR purposes. what would be the better option #2 as betafpv stuff is seldom available this side of the pond?

cheers!

I've never seen the BetaFPV with PA/LNA in the UK, nor the SuperD or SuperP, but the HM TCXO range are available and the RM RP3.

I'd start with a HM TCXO EP1 assuming you can find one.

i can purchase any of the dual diversity RX from the leading brands online. i may start with the HM TCXO since it’s available from a local seller already.
