Bad motor?
#1
I went to fly today and the quad was acting weird. It would have a random twitch and it SEEMED to happen during left yaw/roll commands. I brought it closer and could hear the twitch so I figured it wasn't my feed. When I landed the motors were warmer than usual. Anyways I brought it inside and ran up the motors and one sounds different than the others. Harder to hear in the video but you can definitely hear a different tone/sound. It's the first motor in the video. When I spin the motors by hand I can't really feel a difference between them. I come from speed running RC cars so I'm OCD about motor temps and check them all the time. I flew this quad a couple days ago and everything was fine. Thanks for any input!

Might be time for some new bearings. Your shaft looks straight.

Edit- or maybe just a tear down and cleaning. Crash in any dirt or water recently?
Dangerous operations.

I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

I was thinking that but I have only had this quad since late June. No crashes (not counting a few tumbles into soft grass at low speeds, lol). Would bearings have gone bad that quick? Outrunners are new to me but even in south Florida my bearings in my car motors last a long time doing 130+ mph passes.

I burn through bearings quickly than most, but, I fly in the rain a lot and crash often and hard- so I’m not a good judge of how long a bearing should last if you don’t abuse the hell out of them. Big Grin

You probably already know this, but the quickest way to tell if it’s an esc issue or a motor issue is to swap motors and see if the sound follows the motor or stays with the esc.

If your shaft sticks down below the motor mount, it’s also possible that it’s rubbing on the frame. Loose motor mount screws is another possibility for causing weird sounds.

Edit- or a loose arm screw, but I’d expect to see vibrations on the arm if that was the case.

Ok thanks. I'll clean the motors just to be sure and go from there.

Personally, I’d start with swapping motors between positions. 6 solder joints is quicker than a proper tear down, clean, and rebuild of a motor.

Well it wasn't a motor at all causing the twitch. I replaced the motor and still had the issue. So I pulled up the log and could see a step in the RC command when inputting left aileron. I had an issue with my Tango 2 pro recently and reflashed the whole radio and set it up all over again. My buddy told me to rebind even though I had connection but I didn't listen since it worked. Long story short, I just reflashed just the XF and FreedomTx again (not the SD) and reset the XF nano, and rebound it. For good measure I recalibrated the sticks also. Bam, no more twitch. I'm still curious as to why that worked but hey, I'll take it.

That’s a weird one, but I’m glad you sorted it out. Certainly wouldn’t have been on my list of potential causes.

Happy flying!
