that's cool. It also takes a lot of patience to switch out the filament like that to get the different colours.

If you look closely you can see that he's got an MMU2S unit on the top of his Prusa i3 MK3 in the background that takes 5 different coloured filaments, so no manual filament swapping is required Cool

Unfortunately the average Joe doesn't have that though so for most of the rest of us it's a labour intensive task.

Wouldn't it nice if one of these days, all you need is three primary colored filaments and the print can print any color you want.

Imagine if you had a few resin tanks on a resin printer that just feeds in the required amount of resin, and mixes RGB to make whatever colour you want? Could do gradients etc and even have a clear one and flexible resins so you could vary the flexibility of a part and vary the translucency of a part?

Sounds like a slicing nightmare though lol

Have you seen the guy who uses sharpies on his filament before they hit the hot end? It’s awesome!

I have, but it's not a economical as one might think.

In actuality, you need to use proper sharpies for it to work well, which are around $2 each, and after being open for a couple of hours they are no good. So for a 12hr print you might be $10 down in sharpies...

It's a cool idea, but it makes a lot more sense to just use different coloured filament.

Oh man, I used to sit at my printer for 4 HOURS, waiting for the layer to finish. I would cut the filament and then slowly, painfully feed a new color into the extruder as the PLA got fed into the hot end. Good times. Unfortunately, I do not have enough to get  a Prusa, but my good ol Folger Tech printer still works :-)
If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!
