Curious about Resin 3D Printers
#1
Hi everyone!

I was looking into getting a Resin 3D printer.
Do many of you using them?
If so, what were the features that made you decide on the printer you have?
Also, what has been your experience with the resin printing process?

Thanks in advance!!

I think there are only two of us with resin printer on this forum. bffigjam and myself. I have the Prusa SL1, which is a little more expensive. Bffigjam has the Creality Resin printer.

I personally love my resin printer. I can print most of my FPV parts with it. And now that flexible resin is also available. There are some caveats. Depending on the resin you use, the fume can be very strong. A good ventilated room is best. I also recommend a washing and curing unit. Makes clean up that much easier and less frustrating.

Resin do cost more depending on the country. If you are here in the States, the resin is pretty reasonable and does not really cost that much more.

The resin are said to be toxic, so clean up do take some PPE. Gloves mostly.

The print quality cannot be match compared to filament printer. Prints come out so nice. You can see some examples from the link below.

I have both resin and filament printers. I find myself printing on the filament for prototype, because it is quicker in most cases. Then do my real print on the resin printer.

Resin printing isn't as accurate as filament unless you use the right resin. Resin tend to shrink more, so you will have to adjust for that. Usually a 1-2% increase.

I am surprised that not more people are using resin printers.

This is awesome thanks!

What are you finding easy or hard about the resin print process?
How much space do you need for your setup?
Are you able to do your prints in the house or do you print in the garage?

Thanks again :-)

The hard part about resin printing is the cleaning. aside cleaning the model, as I already mentioned, a washing/curing unit is key. but the other cleaning is the print vat and the FEP cleaning. if you don't probably clean it well, you can't get the first layer to stick. When you get your printer, I can give you tips that will make your life that much easier.

The other difficult part is model orientation and support. My slicer has an optimal orientation and suggested supports for my printer. I haven't used any other slicer. But if you don't oriente properly, the first layer can peel away and ruin your print. I also more carefully check my model for proper support, more so than when I filament print.

The easy part is not having to finish you model. Most resin prints come out practically finished. The other nice thing, if your print messes up, the clean up is easy. Not like filament, which can be a big hairball and clot extruder.

Spacing isn't too much. But you do need space for the printer and washer. A little bit of room in front of the washer and printer to do some cleaning and set down stuff on the table.

I have a separate room in the house where I can open the windows. It depends on the resin you use. So have very strong smell and other do not.

I'm Clearly late to the party, and it looks like you already shared my reviews voodoo, thanks!

Resin printing is fun and different. Definitely recommend a wash and cure unit. Agree with most of what Voodoo has said.
