5" toothpick at 150g
#1
Going through a toothpick phase at the moment Whistling I wanted to see how light I could get it.

Using 1505 motors I was able to get it to 150g dry.  Using a naked walksnail vtx (full size version at > 700mW) helped.

I pulled the neutronrc AIO from the tadpole frame it was in, that was a fun quad but a little heavy on the (1207) motors it ran.

In the end I put parts together as such.
  • OddityRC 5" toothpick frame
  • LANRC 1505 2650kV motors
  • HM EP1 rx
  • Walksnail vtx (1st gen, full size)
  • that neutronrc AIO that we've all be stuffing around with Big Grin
Getting the vtx apart was pretty easy, you can just pry it off, lol.  I left the smaller heatsink on the main IC.  I removed the 4 pin header for power/uart and used two dipole antennas.

Not shown in the photo above but very important is to have at least two screws mounted in the back of the camera to keep the pcb on!  I just use two, facing diagonally opposite each other.  In the end the weight was 8g.

The vtx mounts into the betafpv digital canopy really well.   The install was pretty straightforward, and the camera is using the shortest mipi cable.

The AIO setup is pretty quick with the added simplicity of it being a large toothpick,

This build was a breeze compared to the smaller toothpicks, I liked the integrated nature of the canopy for the vtx housing.   I just hope it is strong enough.

The 1505 motors perform well, ultimately because the quad is light.  Bi-blades are the flavour of the day for now but I do have some (t-mount) triblades I may try as well.  when going small motors, keep your prop weight as light as you can get away with.  this helps greatly with acceleration.

Ready for maiden!

the video below is goggle DVR.  Vtx was set to 200mW, 1080p, regular bitrate.  Time will tell how good the two small dipoles are.  I will try to get it out into a field tomorrow.
I have included sound in the video below cuase I love the sound of bilades!

That thing sounds mean! I like the additional mounting ears for the betafpv canopy! Might be something I will consider next for micro frames I design. Betafpv canopies are my favorite as they seem to have the most durability and protection overall. Also great cam/vtx mounting features. Looking forward to seeing more action on it! Looks like it needs more space to stretch it's wings!

Nice build!

With the light weight of that thing, it might be a 5” that I wouldn’t be afraid to fly on my property.

How are you liking the NeutronRC aio now that most of the kinks have been worked out?
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

looking good. could you elaborate on use of the walksnail naked please? do you just get it in the air quick before it overheats? any issues if you crash and it takes time to recover with battery still plugged?

thats not a toothpick, thats a true ultralight :-) i would like to try it.

the motors are a bit small for my taste of rotor response.
there was a 4,5" triblade by gemfan, if thats still available, it might be a try i would do :-)

@Lukeman, yeah I'm surprised it's not more popular, especially now with walksnail and hdzero vtxs in the AIO footprint.  I know of the betafpv x-knight series that also did the oversized canopy and associated mounts.  The TBS podracer (4" and 5") also has the oversized canopy and canopy mounts.   Both of these came out before digital AIO vtxs so they don't fit them easily.  The new betafpv canopy is great as it is designed for these AIO vtxs and works well.  So far I've noticed improved cooling due to the seperation between the vtx and AIO fc.  Also the 3 screw mount doesn't seem to introduce any jello.   So far the canopy has held up well is is surprisingly strong.

@lemmers, thank you mate.  Yeah I'm digging the AIO and am happy with it.   It took us a while!  Big thanks to Alka for the quick response to help sort out the AM32 esc shenanigans.   Like you I am getting the OSD flicker issues when low voltage, I've yet to try that setting you posted though.

@nobby.  Sure the setup is running without the outer heatsink.  I've left the small heatsink on the main SOC chip.  I've only run it to 200mW so far.  I always use standby mode.  This helps keep the temp down when the quad is not armed.   I've had the video drop out when the quad is on the ground, approx 100m away, using standby mode.  Each time I would arm (turtle mode) I have to do this by memory, then the video comes back as the vtx switches from standby mode to normal power.   Leaving it in the grass after 15 seconds the overheating warning appears.  I had the vtx approx 90deg as I walked over to it.  So yes, in naked form, even with standby mode, it will overheat if you don't get to it by 30 seconds.  After that it ramps up to and over 100deg by 60 seconds.  Then the vtx overheating protection kicks in and you see the green led on the vtx flashing.  Ideally not the best to be in this mode for too long, lol...

Needless to say that I've had to make some changes/improvements after the first maiden flight in some real outdoor space.
  • The linear pigtails are quite shit.  I'm going to use the stock walksnail, yes I know they're shit too but not as shit as the pigtails.
  • I needed longer t-mount propellor screws, the ones I used only went into the motor approx 1.5mm deep, just not enough.  I came down from flying to find the props hanging on by a thread, lol...
  • I rotated the vtx to get access to the onboard DVR port.
  • Performed a tune where the PIDs are upped a bit and filters sitting around 1.4 each.

Thanks man, I like flying the ultralights, they are not as loud as a 5 inch and I like that. I’m rebuilding the 4inch toothpick as well, I’ want it to stay as a 2s bird since the neutronrc at32’aionwas removed and put into this 5 inch toothpick.

Hugs, I found those triblades you mentioned in my props box, I’ll try them out next rip! Smile

Wow this looks super fun - nice build!

What kind of battery are you using with this?

Wow. That is really impressive!!

All my 5" toothpicks/ ultralights are 165g+, and analog.
1505 is really underpowered. Not even 2004.

I tinkered with similar underpowered, but came around, and consider 2005/2204 to be best balance.

my ul5 is 145g on some bh vy 2004 3150kv motors, they are pretty lighteight. unibody might save some additional grams, an old diatone m-515 frame with durable aloi top.
