ZOHD Nano Talon EVO build -
#1
Decided to build a Nano Talon after a year of looking at the airframe.  After my fair success with The Drifter, ordered one and built it out.  Still a spaghetti mess of wiring, but everything woks...so it is just a matter of cleaning things up.

After getting the control surfaces working the way I expect them to, tried test flying it...and have had no success with two repairs.

What I am experiencing with the EVO... AUW with pack is 569gr. Using (or trying to anyway) a 3S-2200mah/35C pack. Have INAV ANGLE engaged, throttle 100%, ailerons trimmed neutral on both wings and had the elevators with a slight up-tilt. I have the CG balanced at the aft side of the marks. On the throw, it starts to nose down and hits the dirt about 7-10 meters out. Cannot seem to get enough air speed quick enough for the main wings to start generating lift.

Went back through a thread on RCGroups and found PaunFD's information regarding elevator trimming and added that too mine to see if I can at least get it off the ground. After the 5th try, broke the motor mount out but I have that repaired. The winds have picked up here, so it will be a few hours before I get to try it again.

Also might shift to a 4S-1300mah pack to see if the extra push will help me. This is my second fixed wing craft, first is a Drift that basically will launch itself with a 10kph head wind...spoiled I guess!

Here is the main repair after tearing the motor mount (and motor) in one of the crashes. .

Will be attempting to get this one airborne again this weekend. Adjust the elevators to add a little up tilt and also changed the switches a little on both this and The Drifter.

Now that the ESC throttle is calibrated, things will hopefully be different.

Modes switch now has POS1-ANGLE, POS2-ACRO, POS3-MANU. Also assigned AUTOTUNE on my chan12 switch so I will try tuning the PID loop on both my ZOHD’s.

Have you considered adding a ZOHD Kopilot to the mix? On Painless360's You Tube channel he has a lot of really good info on the Talon (both original and EVO) and the Kopilot system. The Kopilot system is a bit like using Angle mode for quads. It's a gyro/self-leveling unit that runs about $40. Painless360 loves it and uses it for his Talon. Hard to say how much help it would be with hand launching but he really likes it so maybe it's worth a look?

Painless360 likes everything. Me too if I get things for free.

It flies!!! Damn this thing is fast…crazy fast compared to the drift. It could care less that there is a breeze, it just sort of plows through it. Switched the prop from a 6x2 to a 5x3 and it is perfect. Also flew a 4S-2200mah instead of the 1300 I was trying for originally. Could not get the CG right without adding a roll of nickels to the nose with the lighter pack, the 2200 is perfect.

Have not reviewed the video yet, will get an idea of what the pack will yield later.

I do have a bit of video interference when spinning up the motor. The FC in this has been banged around a lot so I might swap in a Matek F722-WING that I have here. That will work well with this airframe I think.

This is the second throw, the first one netted four laps and a landing to prove I could do it.
