Worth Going Down The Blackbox Rabbit Hole?
#16
Ow that you probably have the best knowledge of blackbox tuning among all of us, you can be the resident expert.

Whoa that means A LOT coming from you voodoo. Admittedly at this point I am barely scratching the surface with a million questions and needing to go back to source material constantly. But with that said, I'd be happy to look at any traces to see if there's anything I might be able to spot.

Blackbox is so hard to keep up, especially with every release, so much of the flight algorithm and add flight features. I think I gave up somewhere when 3.0 BF was released. Stock PIDs are flying so well these days with little tuning. Blackbox tuning is great to know if you can't tune it visually.

It is a head spinner. I'm finding that a decent amount of the legwork in learning this stuff is reconciling to new features. RPM Filtering is big one.

But what made me a believer was the actual stick feel of (at least what I think) is a properly tuned quad using blackbox. It's important to realize this is something you can not see in videos. Perhaps more important to realize is that it's something you can't even tell yourself - precisely because your upper bound reference point stops at your own tune. Put another way, I always felt my quad flew great realizing only after the fact that I was completely used to the lag and (relative) unresponsiveness because I knew no better.

Yes, huge kudos to you for doing this Cool

Because my quads have generally flown to an acceptable standard on defaults PIDs and I'm only a mediocre pilot, I've hardly bothered with any tuning, let alone going into the blackbox tuning maze. As long as I don't get oscillations, jello that I can't put up with, or bounce backs, then I am happy because the limited time I get to fly means I just don't want to waste half of that time trying to perfect flight characteristics. I just want to fly the thing and have a bit of fun. Plus every new release of Betaflight seems to change the way the engine works which means having to re-tune all your quads all over again every 3-6 months unless you are happy to stay on an old version of Betaflight and lose any new features that those new versions might bring.

For those that hare happy to visually tune instead, I recently stumbled across this great video which I think does a pretty good job of explaining it in simple terms with demonstrations on what the changes actually affect: https://youtu.be/04Ixyomu9d8?t=0

You now need to change the caption under your member name to "Blackbox Wizard" Big Grin

LOL more like blackbox n00b.

At the end of the day and not to sound corny but it's as true as can get ... if you're having fun, you're doing it right!! Never forget that.

JB made an interesting comment in his live stream yesterday (HERE -> 43:37 - 45:15). In a nutshell, he said that a lot of the great pilots just use default PIDs and don't bother with tuning (it's a different story for pro racers however). With default PIDs in Betaflight being so good these days, if you focus on stick time then you don't generally need to worry about PID tuning, unless you have some real issues with the way your quad is flying.

I can totally see that.

I think what I am failing to really make clear is that, at least to me, a blackbox tuned quad FEELS a lot better. In a video between a tuned-by-gut quad vs a tuned-by-blackbox quad will in all likelihood look pretty much the same. But I can tell you the feeling is noticeably different. I am performing the same split-S. But now what I'm seeing in my goggles seems to be happening much faster in response to my stick movements. With feed forward properly tuned, I'll tell ya it almost feels like the quad is moving before I tell it to! There can be an argument I guess that over time this makes the pilot better and more precise therefore his flying is better. But really I think the immediate benefit it from the FEEL not the VISUAL. I really hope that makes sense.

Looks like you’re getting the hang of it all, awesome.
I dont use BB much, but when it comes to tricky oscillations it can be a huge help in figuring out which axis needs tweaked for me.
