Why does my quad just drop out of the sky for no reason?
#1
I was having a issue with my Frsky X4R loosing signal when I would fly more than a couple hundred yards away and I had actually lost my previous Nazgul5 from the same issue, everything is normal and then all the sudden the RSSI alarm goes off and then it was gone. It had happened several times and I have lost 2 quads because of it, so I switched to Spektrum tx/rx. I have had success in the past with Spektrum stuff and other than the compatibility issues, it is great. Then today I went to my usual spot to fly, wide open fields, and did a lap and as I was going back around the quad just lost signal and tumbled out of the air. I was 100 yards from where it dropped and I can't wrap my head around why this is happening. Obviously, the Tx/Rx doesn't seem to matter, so I am wondering if its something that I am doing. Could it be the way I have the antennas set up on my quad (ty-wrapped to the arms of the quad on the bottom)? Could it be something like signal interference?
I am absolutely addicted to flying my quad, but I am scared to fly it anywhere that's not within eyesight for fear of loss! I would really appreciate any input anyone might have so that hopefully I can get this thing fixed and back to normal!
Thanks

Maybe there is a lot of interference at that frequency at the spot you fly. You could try upping the power you transmit at, but even at a low power 100-200m away should be no problem. Unless you try to go behind a hill or something. Perhaps a different frequency like TBS Crossfire @ 915mhz might work better. Or 915mhz Express LRS.

I use Crossfire myself, even though I don't do long distance flying. I like it because of the solid control link, I don't have to worry about failsafe. If it's good enough for those crazy long-distance flyers it's good enough for me. Wink

I would also check for any problems, like the antenna on your radio being lose/broken.

What controller are you using? My buddy had a similar issue with his xm+, I gave him a Rxsr, the problem returned… he installed crossfire and that gemlin showed back up… He did some research and found out his controller suffered from poor soldering… he resoldered ALL the joints and the problem never came back..(fingers crossed)

I am using a DX6 with a Spektrum 4649T receiver, and I actually used to have a Taranis x9d with a XR4 and the same problem used to happen on more of a regular basis.  That's why I switched to Spektrum, but it seems like that wasn't the issue.

I recently had to troubleshoot RC issues on 2 quads. FrSky and Flysky.

On little 3" micro I was getting failsafe within 20-40m.. turns out both antennas not clipped in. Similar issue happens with those glued on soldered antennas. With stress, can be "cold solder" where its not 100% connected.

On 5", had weird sporadic failsafes with punch outs. I think it was touching the CF or picking up noise from ESCs. I wrapped receiver in electrical and then aluminum and electrical.

If you are using a not popular receiver, also double-check firmware. Bad firmware is often responsible for failsafe within 100m.
