Walksnail Avatar HD / FatShark Dominator HD Firmware Downloads
#1
The official download area on the Caddx website is linked to below. It appears that Caddx have removed any previous firmware versions so their website only currently lists the latest firmware version...

https://caddxfpv.com/pages/download

For access to the current and all historic firmware versions, D3VL from the FPV.WTF and B3YOND teams has created a dedicated website hosting all of them at the following link...

https://walksnail.app/firmware

D3VL Wrote:Hey all,

You may know us from B3YOND or DigiView!

We've made a simple site to make finding firmware updates nice and easy -> https://avatar-firmware.d3vl.com/
Make sure you bookmark it!

It's open-source and we'll be adding new firmware as they're released.

We also plan on adding a mailing list so you can be notified when there's a new firmware release!

Hello:

Three months ago, I purchased the Fat Shark/Walksnail HD kit. I've flashed firmware updates twice, following the instructions and haven't had an issue.

I had been running 26.30.6 until I came upon https://avatar-firmware.d3vl.com/ and flashed 28.32.10 to take advantage of more font choices. At the same time, I also did the "FC osd fonts update" from the CADDX site. Everything went fine for the installs/flashing.

The Walksnail is mounted on a 3kg hexacopter with a Black Cube FC. The WS is connected to the FC via telem cable for OSD information. All appears to work well until today.

On the FC side, the OSD is a single panel, using the default "Clarity" font. At this point, I freely admit I do not have even a basic understanding of the relationship of the ArduCopter OSD and the Fat Shark goggle OSD/fonts, font table indexes, Ardupilot fonts vs BetaFlight fonts, etc. and how all of it interacts.

Today, I tried to use a BetaFlight font, set in the goggles via the "Font Update" in the Menu|Settings|Device page. After that selection, I powered down both the hexacopter and goggles and powered back up. I had done this before, though not seeing any change taking place.

The first difference I saw was that the OSD display items had shifted to the right. Since the firmware update to 28.32.10 also had an "OSD Position" menu item which I had already used, I tried to get into the goggle menu via the 4 way button.

Nothing happened if I pressed the button down to enter the menu, though the control did beep as normal. After a few power resets, nothing seemed to get me into the menu. The video record button also now does not work and strangely, the 4 way switch button can start and stop the video recording.

At some point, I assumed this was a firmware issue since I was still receiving video from the Walksnail and followed the "Downgrading" instructions by re-naming Avatar_GND_28.32.10.IMG to Avatar_GND_29.32.10.IMG, hoping to get back to 28.32.10.

Following the flashing instructions, I get to the point of pressing the RED Link button for the required time, but the goggles never enter the update mode - black screen, beeping sound. The display never changes from the standby screen.

I tried that procedure a couple of times and even re-named 26.30.6 to 29.30.6 and tried to flash that file, to no avail.

Are there any procedures that I haven't tried or have not used correctly, to get me back in operation with the goggle menu?

Thanks in advance.
Ron

I’ve done the same and now have two bricks in two crafts. This was the final nail in their coffin as far as I’m concerned. WS/CADDX are not an option any more for me. I have one more WS VTX but I’m taking it out and will switch with O3 or HDZ 2.

Did you ever get a working flash? Would give me some hope on recouping costs.

For Ron, it sounds like his goggles was having problems when he tried to use his custom BF Font. Maybe his font file was corrupted, and could try reloading a different custom font file to the goggles.

You say you are having the same problem, do you mean you cannot update the firmware on your goggles and cannot get into the menu? Or are you having issues with your VTXs? They are not working, or you are unable to flash them? And were they bricked in a failed flash (such as low/disconnect power during flash?) or stopped working in flight?

If your goggles are bricked, it maybe this might help (for the v1, not the X)

Getting back a bit to the OP, thank you. I found this helpful video for anyone wanting to roll back their firmware versions, hint, there's a trick to it:

In my case I had to return my CaddX GogglesX. I purchased a set of Fatshark Dominator HD goggles. The Fatshark website lists 37.42.4 as current but then provides 37.42.3, that is weird. Since my Walksnail quads are 37.42.4 and my new Dominators are (limited to?) 37.42.3 I get the warning to update firmware before each flight. I do not know what risk is involved in skipping this step. I also do not know what risk is involved in rolling back the quads to 37.42.3 using the trick in video linked above. I also do not know if CaddX firmware downloads are identical to Fatshark Firmware downloads. They have the same names. Coming at it from another angle: I do not know if I can take Firmware 37.42.4 from the CaddX site and install it on the Dominators. Or if I should? Maybe Fatshark is not releasing 37.42.4 for a reason? Firmware 37.42.4 and the new heatsink wreaked havoc on my GogglesX. There's a hell of a lot I don't know and I haven't heard from Fatshark about that in a few days now.
For the moment the Dominators are powering up, linking, and I am flying my quads with the mismatched firmware. I much prefer the Dominators to the GogglesX. No drama, just turn everything on and fly, incredible...

And for anyone considering these goggles, RotorRiot has them on sale this week for $342. A few $ less than the Integra, but you'll have to add your own antennas.

Who would have imagined 1080p OLED digital goggles being sold cheaper than analog goggles. Maybe that is the only FPV component that has significantly come down in price instead of increasing along with everything else? I guess we have to thank Caddx for starting this price war.

FatShark only manufacture the goggle shells. Caddx supply all the electronic hardware and associated firmware. Any files you find on the FatShark site are just copies of what Caddx provided them with, and with FatShark being FatShark they can't be bothered to keep their hosted files up-to-date with what Caddx have published.

Just use the firmware files from the Caddx website or the walksnail.app website linked to in the first post of this thread. There is no reason  to get any firmware from the FatShark website.

Excellent.
The code for the Dominators from Rotor riot is: RAMPAGEFS10 Figures they go on sale right after I bought them!
FYI for my Dominators I bought a pack of 4 DJI antennas from NewBeeDrone for $19: https://newbeedrone.com/cdn/shop/product...1616097439
I also ordered the TrueRC combo with the patches but the little DJI are easy and durable for close in stuff, whoops, etc. I saw MadsTech using them in his Dominator review.

Looks like Walksnail is up to 37.42.7 already, LOL. But it's Beta. With my newfound knowledge I guess I'll just use the firmware files from CaddX and bring everything forward to a stable release. With DV3L I won't have to keep updating the whole fleet thank you very much. They deserve a coffee for sure.

Are you sure about the number?

I have been using 34.40.15 on my Fat Shark Dominator HD goggles and 3 different quads with different Walksnail setups.

I just downloaded 37.42.5 stable from the Caddx website.

34.40.15 is old, it is dated August 23 , 2023. Maybe it is a newer firmware that makes you have to "skip" a firmware mismatch between goggles and quad before you fly, if you are not getting it. But yes, I could put stable 37.42.5 on everything and just use that going forward. Ending the merry go round of fleet updates would be nice. I flew all 5 of my Walksnail quads today with mismatched firmware without issue.

Yes I know 34.40.15 is old but you said "Looks like Walksnail is up to 32.42.7 already, LOL."

32.xx.x, that to me is older than 34.40.15. So how can 32.xx.x is still beta when I am using 34.40.15 and it is not beta? Unless you had a typo. Big Grin

There is no 32.42.7 firmware so it was likely a typo, which isn't really a surprise when a company has released 27 firmware versions for their product in less than 2 years, so it's easy to get lost in the myriad of firmware releases and version numbers. Maybe one day Caddx will have a solid stable firmware release that people don't have to keep updating, but we will probably all have died from old age by the time that happens.

Sorry, after looking at the other numbers I sort of figured there is a typo somewhere. I was surprised when I had to update the firmware on my Walksnail system. They sure come out with new ones fast. Hard to keep up.  Big Grin
