Using SD card in DJI air unit for blackbox recording
#1
Flying a Transtec Beetle 2.5 HOM with DJI air unit. Fab little machine but want to improve the tuning further and want to get blackbox data. My FC has the new F405AOI HD which does not have any on board flash memory. I am using FrSky R-XSR for the receiver rather than the DJI air unit which means the RX and TX from the air unit normally reserved for the reciever are not being used.

As one of the RX/TX lines to the Air unit is not being used, (the one normally used if the Air unit was acting as a receiver) I wondered whether it was possible to connect to another UART to save blackbox data via a serial port to the SD card in the flight controller.

Has anyone tried to do this - I am struggling.

I know the other option is to get a separate logging device, but this would be so much cleaner....

Cheers

The DJI Air Unit can't log blackbox data so if your FC doesn't have onboard blackbox logging then your only option is to use an external module like the Airbot Openlager device connected to a spare UART.

How do you tell if the FC has onboard blackbox logging? Is it simply a matter of having a FC that has onboard flash memory?

Yes, either that or an SD Card slot on the FC. If you go to the Blackbox tab in Betaflight Configurator the dropdown will also show an option for SD Card or Onboard logging if your FC has either of those capabilities.

Thank you. I did suspect as much as the DJI unit is already doing a lot of work with the video recording. The FC does not have any flash memory when logged into Beta flight so I will solder in an external unit.

Thanks for the quick response SnowLeopard - great to have such a helpful community!!!
