Tweaker 180 what motors in 2019?
#1
I'm looking to build my first quad.  I've been following Oscar's tutorials and will likely go down the Tweaker frame path.  The other 180 tutorial was written 4 years ago and a lot of the parts are not available anymore, like Diatone 180 and Xelites 180 frames.  Also in said Tweaker tutorial, the motors in the Tweaker 180 tutorial, for the Tweaker FPV Addiction frame, are not available. This was T-motor F40 2500kv.  There seems to be new versions T-motor F40 2305 Pro 2400kv and 2600kv.  Are these still good today or is there something better?

Tutorials here with old parts....
2016: https://oscarliang.com/tweaker-180-review-build/
2015: https://oscarliang.com/180-mini-quad-par...uadcopter/

Also, what's a good camera in 2019 for this 180 Tweaker FPV Addiction frame (it has that 3D printer mount - can that be removed)?  Runcam Micro Swift 2 (or 3)? something else?

Let me ask you, are you picking this frame because there is a tutorial? Or are you picking frame because you truly want this frame? And why are you picking 4 in as your first build? 4in can be tough, because it is in between size. For example you can use 13xx-15xx or 18xx-22xx motors depending on frame. You can use 30mmx30mm stack or 20mmx20mm stack. Picking components can start to get difficult.

I always recommend a 5in for your first build. If you truly still want a 4in, then say so. We are will to help regardless.

I'm not stuck on this frame.  I choose it because a lot of the others on the list are not available, and this frame looks pretty standard to me with room for the components, plus the cost is okay.  I want a 4 so i can have best of both worlds, fly indoors and outdoors.  I was thinking to get a whoop but then stumbled upon smaller quads than 5's.  It would be good to have that option of smaller Lipo indoors and bigger for outdoors.

I think you'll struggle to fly any 4" indoors unless you have a massive warehouse at your disposal or are a seasoned expert. We don't know your history so maybe you are Smile Even flying a 75mm 2S brushless whoop can be real challenge in a confined space.

Unless you are already an expert, if you want to fly both indoors and outdoors I would suggest building a 5" for outdoor flying and just buying a pre-built BNF whoop for indoor fun/practice.

At the end of the day it's your choice/decision but that's just my opinion Smile

I guess the question is, what is your end goal with a build? To actually gather your own choice of components and build a quad from those, or mainly to understand and learn the process of building a quad? If it's the latter then another option to consider is a DIY "kit". With these you get everything you need to build the quad but you need to do all the assembly/soldering yourself, and you also need to additionally get and solder in an appropriate receiver. There are currently two reasonable kits on the market that consist of modern flight electronics which are the Eachine 3" Tyro79 at $79 and the Eachine 5" Tyro99 at $99.

What Snow said. I've been doing this a while now and can't fly my 3 inch indoors except to hover.

I’m coming from 1/10 electric RC cars and aBlade coaxial Heli. Actually I was going to go collective pitch it then found out about FPV quads... I’ve built before but not quads. I’ve read that you can simply put a smaller lipo to run a 4 indoors is that not the case? If not then yeah I might default to a whoop but even trashcan you need to put smaller lipo for indoors I hear. I’m excited by the DIY of quad building and the massive choice in parts, but the motors are giving me a headache. You guys are probably more up to date on what motors are good recently.

I just checked those eachine kits... look so good value I’m gonna go for that.. I doubt I could buy all those parts for less... now have to decide 79 or 99! .Thankyou

Yeah. I got a Trashcan and it's unflyable in my house but I'm not an expert pilot. If you look on YouTube some of the good pilots can just about manage it but all say that on 2S it's really designed for outdoor use.

You can put a less powerful LiPo on any quad and/or configure throttle limiting but even then I wouldn't fancy flying anything bigger than a whoop indoors. Not to mention that the 3" and 4" quads have unguarded props so only try flying one indoors if you're wearing Kevlar protective body armour and you don't mind chopping up your furniture and TV when you inevitably crash it multiple times (which you will) Big Grin

There are a ton of videos on YouTube of the Tyro79 and Tyro99 including full build walkthroughs. One of the members on here (Scott_M) built the Tyro99 already and he is currently in the process of building the Tyro79. A couple of his threads on it are HERE and HERE.

No prop guards?! That’s definitely not going in my house. Maybe I need 2 quads... tiny one for the house and not a trashcan by the sounds of it, which means cheaper which is good cause that would prob need different batteries...

Hi Robster
I am with the others on flying the bigger quads outside. I am a new pilot and still crashing a lot. I fly whoop sized quads inside trying to hone my skills.
Think of it this way, I have 2 whoops they are both within a gram of each other in weight. 30 grams with a battery, that is barely over an ounce. It would take a lot to do much damage with it. OTOH that tyro79 weighs over 1/2 a pound without a battery and no prop guards. That would really do some damage.

I have both the 79 and the 99. I call the 99 my scary quad, with the right battery and props it will probably do 100mph. I recently saw a video on the 79 it it does 80mph. So even for a 3" it is pretty serious for a new pilot. I am still building the 79 but have been flying my whoops indoors all winter and getting plenty of simulator time, I hope to be ready for tyro's come spring.

Here is a video of some of my indoor flying

And the crash video

I cannot even imagine the havoc a 4" with up to date hardware would produce if flown indoors, unless you live in a stadium! Big Grin

Seriously, anything above a Whoop is really pushing the limits inside. These little machines are no joke. I started on a 2", a Lizard 95 and thought about flying it indoors. The first hard throttle hit outdoors and it was 100' in the air. Outside only Smile

My favorite quad right now is a 3" Japalura and it has plenty is the power department. I have 1407-3500kv motors and I will say that it is as quick at my first 5" race quad. I considered a 4", but they seem to sort of be "stepkids" and there is a better selection of props and such for the 3"...though that could change in an instant. There are so many motor choices for the 3" and 4" that it would be hard to guess what it best.

Look forward to watching your build come together!

OMG, no one told me it would be this much fun!  Addicted :)

A 4in with 14xx-15xx can probably hit 70-90mph. Can't imagine flying that around the house.
