A question that came to my mind [maybe silly],Is there anymore old timers like me in this hobby? If there are please let me know,it's just my inquisitive mind. It's higher than what many people might think. Even though you do see quite a few youngsters in the multirotor hobby, it's not a particularly cheap hobby to be in and most of the people with a load of spare cash to burn on such things tend to be those who are in the upper age limit where some of their main responsibilities such as mortgages etc. have mostly (or all) been paid off. There was a poll on here some time last year put a majority of members in the "middle-aged" or higher bracket. A number of regular members are in their 60's, and I believe that Keyboard Kid is also in his 70's too. The addrenalin rush for me is greater plus it also involves electronics and comp. abilities. One thing is for sure i'll always try to make the most out of it,specially with the help off all you guys. Yeah, for this hobby you should be young, full of energy, or retired with plenty of time - or any two. • Posts: 3,533 Threads: 265 Likes Received: 2,610 in 1,545 posts Likes Given: 3,893 Joined: Feb 2018 Reputation: 78 I'm a 60s old fart here. I'm newer in the hobby of FPV too. I've only been doing FPV for a little less than 2 years. Like you, I have been into RC for about 40 years. I started with planes, then cars and finally helicopters. FPV hands down is the most fun. It fills that desire to fly that life prevented me getting my private pilot's license. My only regret is that I didn't get to expose my father to FPV. He was a huge aviation aficionado, Free Flight and RC guy too. • Posts: 3 Threads: 0 Likes Received: 0 in 0 posts Likes Given: 2 Joined: Nov 2019 Reputation: 0 07-Dec-2019, 03:04 PM (This post was last modified: 07-Dec-2019, 03:16 PM by MacCool.) I’m about your age (mid-late 60’s) and have been flying RC since 1972. From then to today, the hobby has seen incredible change. Back then, we had to worry about every truck driver going down I-80 (about a mile from our field) with a linear amplifier on his CB radio. Now, we get distressed if we have a little snow in our FPV video link from our plane flying 2 miles away. I routinely send my Phantom 4 on these three-mile autonomous missions while I sit on the deck with a cup of coffee (my Phantom and Mavic 2 are about photography, not flying). I got interested in FPV when my wife gave me a pair of DJI RE goggles for the Mavic 2. The Mavic is a fantastic machine, but not particularly exciting flying. Right now, I’m stumbling my way through Liftoff with my new QX7. What a hoot!! I’m not sure what quad I’m going to build....I’m going to open that can of worms once I can finally finish a course in Liftoff and can acquire some rudimentary understanding of the electronics of FPV. ETA: One guy I fly with is 93. He used to fly 747s on the Asia route for PanAm. He’s just getting into quads and just bought Liftoff too. In fact, he helped me troubleshoot getting my computer to recognize my controller. Remarkable man. • Posts: 5,869 Threads: 47 Likes Received: 2,779 in 2,241 posts Likes Given: 7,635 Joined: Jul 2019 Reputation: 97 16-Dec-2019, 04:35 PM (This post was last modified: 16-Dec-2019, 04:36 PM by iFly4rotors.) Yeah, I am an old fart too...late 60's; retired IT software developer; only been in RC and FPV a little over a year. I fly small scale tiny whoops and toothpicks; these are cost effective for me and I can fly the whoops indoors when I can't get to the field. Also, I would like to get into long range if I can find some place to fly. Currently working on a 3" Rat Kwad. • |
