S800 build questions
#1
Hi all,

I read Oscars build log regarding the S800 wing some time ago.
This got me thinking about building one myself.

I already build (and rebuild) 4 quadcopters so I have aquired some building experience in the past 9 months.
I have a FrSky Q X7S with R9.

I selected already most of the components following Oscar's recommendations.
There are however some things that I'm not sure about.

1) I'm thinking of using a micro size camera because those are the ones I already use on my quads.
I tend to use the same components if possible because it's easier keeping spare parts or swapping out stuff.
Question: Is a Micro size easy to mount or would a mini size be better?

2) RX and/or FC
I'm currently undecided on what RX and/or FC I should use.
I would prefer to use an R9 receiver since I have R9 on my TX and it would give me good range.
But I also like the idea of having some sort of autolevel mode.
My quads I fly only in Acro mode and I can fly multiple packs without crashing. So I guess I'm now an OK pilot.

I looked at the following three options.
 - R9 Slim+ (Cheapest)
Pro's: Simple and R9 compatible so good range.
Cons: No FC or gyro so no auto level
Question: I think I can connect the servo's and ESC signal line directly to the CH1-3 on the R9 Slim+. Or am I wrong?

- S6R (Mid price)
   Pro's:  Auto level mode
   Con's: 2.4Ghz so less range

- Matek F405-WING + R9MM (Most expensive)
Pro's:  Auto level mode (I guess since it's running iNav)
            R9 compatible so good range
Future proof looking at the number of ports/pads on the Matek.
Con's: Complexity? I'm not familiar with iNav just yet.
            Cost

Any ideas, remarks and/or advise is welcome.

Also maybe someone knows a good simulator for me to test wing flying.

Thanks!

1) Mini should be a tiny bit easier than Micro, but not by much... but it shouldn't matter what camera size you use as long as you have a way to mount it. The S800 is design for full size cameras. For smaller camera you might need some sort of 3D printed part or just glue the micro camera in foam... you will figure it out Smile

2) As your first wing, I feel like having an FC is kind of unnecessary, it just makes it harder to troubleshoot if you have problems. I like that because of the simplicity, no setup, no learning curve Smile It's definitely worth having an FC and have auto-level capability, IMO that would be the next progression once you've mastered flying a simple wing without FC.

If you go for no-FC route, then you need a receiver with PWM outputs. But I don't think the R9 Slim+ has PWM outputs, only SBUS as far as I know? You need a PWM output receiver to connect directly to servos and ESC. Most affordable option is to buy a second hand D4R-II, this one can easily give you 1Km+ range, more than enough for learning how to fly your first wing. (let me know if you need one, i might have a spare one)

Yes the Matek F405-Wing is a good option for wings, should work nicely with R9MM.

Hi Oscar,

Thanks for you insight. I'll pick just any camera.

During my lunch a looked at some iNav video's.
Seems not so hard to configure if you have already knowledge of Betaflight.
So now I'm leaning a little towards using a FC.
Also because it has a lot of connectivity.
