Project 399 Super G+
#31
Ok, a real flight in this video.  I got my wish, and it was only 59* at 4am today.  Usually our overnight temps are in the mid 80s and shortly after the sun comes up it's 90*+.

A few things were learned today.

One, I forgot to setup the RX to read LQ, so my RSSI gauge didn't work.  Prior to taking off, I didn't know if I had a problem giving me a low RSSI or if it was a setup issue.  I decided to fly and if the RSSI started to get worse as I flew away, I would come back and land.  I have since fixed the problem.  I also got rid of the bold white Foxeer writing in the OSD at the bottom.

Second, when I flew yesterday, even though it was a very short flight the motors were very warm.  I figured it was due to ambient temps and being in direct sunlight.  But just in case I hovered for one minute in the lower temps.  When I landed the motors were hardly warm at all.  Also after flying around the motors were still barely warm.  So, I think my decision to not fly in these summer temps was a good one.  I can see how things will overheat with a quickness in high ambient temps.

As you will see in the DVR, there is lots of interference by each house as I go back and forth, but yet none at our house.  That's because I turned off the 5G side of our router.  This makes me wonder how 5G will affect our quads when it goes full live in a few months.  Those of you that fly in urban environments, you may need to switch to 1.3Ghz for your video.  We will see.

Flying FPV skills have some perishablity.  I haven't flown for over 3 months and I could feel it.  Pretty rusty, but it felt good to be back in the air.  Hoping for a cool morning tomorrow.  I will test the Session on the quad and see if rotor blades are truly out of view.

Finally, I absolutely love how this quad flies.  It feels like my 6 inch in the sticks, light and responsive, unlike the 10 inch which feels heavier.  I expected that for the most part, but this quad feels the best of any quad for its first flight.  I haven't done any of the changes recommended for a dead cat design either.

Oh, as Scott pointed out my first video was 5 minutes in length for a 30 second video.  Well that has to do with the newest version of Hit Film.  They have made changes, some of which I haven't figured out how to get around or even why they did what they did.....oh well....

A short video of today's flight....in the video  you see a hot air balloon in the distance.  If this hadn't been a first flight and I had a proven quad I would have flown over to them.  Not a fan of these guys in the neighborhood, and neither are most of the community.  But that's a different story....here's the video.  The first minute or so is from my wife with her phone, and then the second half is through the goggles/DVR.

And a shout out to Snow!!  I used the smart audio to mess with VTX settings today.  It worked perfectly!

Thanks....too early to know yet about the ESC.  I have heard only good things about it so far.

The build is done.....

I was going to have DroneofPrey print me some landing gear, but I couldn't find any that I like.  So I went with PVC pipe like on my 10inch. Highly functional just not beautiful.

All that is left is to program the motor layout to the dead cat standard, and any tuning that might be needed.

I hope to fly in the next few days with the Session and see if I have any jello.  Keeping fingers crossed, because finding the source of the dreaded jello can be challenging at times.

Bad azz John! Looks totally Black ops awesome!

How far back does your battery sit? I might have to tweak the base layout of your gps/antenna tail.

Well Steve, that is a bit of an unknown at this time as I haven't ordered the batteries yet.  CG on this quad is about where the rear arms attach.  I will try to get the length of the battery I will buy and give you an idea.  At this point, I'm pretty sure the battery will hang past the end of the tail....not sure but likely.

Thanks guys.

I went with the blackout look as part of a theme and named after my granddaughter.

Her name is Ravyn, and like a Raven, the quad needed to be blacked out.

The next Super G+ will be yellow and black, and I'm thinking a name of either Super Bee, from my youth and pony cars.  Or Twisp, which is what the Salish Indians from the Methow Valley in Washington State called Yellow Jackets or Wasps....

No worries. All we will need to do is recess the mast/tail back some to fit up against the battery, kind of like a book-end. Then make screws recessed into the base so its flush with the battery pad.

Sneak peak time for everyone else Wink Still a bit to get done today. Rx antenna mount and the SMA mount coming out the rear, similar to where you have it positioned now.

Actually just noticed your battery strap is mounted to the bottom. If its bottom mounted the GPS mount won't interfere lol Doh ROFL
