New Complicated VTX Channel / Power Configuration in Betaflight 4.1
#1
Thumbs Down
Having watched JB's video, setting up the new VTX tables correctly that were introduced into Betaflight 4.1 is complex mess, and what on earth are those arbitrary mystical "divider" values you need to specify? It seems that VTX manufacturers need to define these. So good luck to those of you with a current or legacy VTX for which the manufacturer hasn't done that.

After watching how this stuff is all configured I can see a lot of people becoming stuck and ending up with non-working SmartAudio or Tramp for VTX configuration via their OSD or transmitter.

I think I have to agree with Pawel's response/views. If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Well would you believe it. It seems that while I was posting this, JB has made his video private so it is no longer accessible other than the thumbnail. I can only guess it was because of some objection to it from the Betaflight devs because I wouldn't say he had too many good words to say about them for having implementing this new "feature". I still have a cached copy of the video in another Chrome tab. I wonder if I can save it somehow. Then again I don't really want to p*** JB off for republishing one of his own videos that he took down.

EDIT: Since JB re-uploaded his video with additional information in, my comment above is now irrelevant and I have now added that revamped video to the first post.

Just be aware that if you upgrade to Betaflight 4.1 that you may end up with some headaches in getting SmartAudio / Tramp functionality working again for VTX configuration.

I'm glad I spotted his video yesterday, watched it and did the Vtx tables setup. I had no idea why my smartaudio stopped working until I saw the video.

For those who didn't see the video: you need the latest Configurator Release Candidate version which adds a Video Transmitter tab where you can set up the tables. The instructions in the tab are easy to follow but as Snow said, the power levels section is a tricky one if you don't know the values your Vtx use. These values are not the power output values, but a divider value which the Vtx manufacturer hopefully posted somewhere.
You can also check for the values in the config file that you download from the link in the Video Transmitter tab.

I got mine working after a bit of fiddling with the values.

Yeah. I think this is going to create a whole load of new problems for people who upgrade to 4.1 and then wonder why their SmartAudio or Tramp VTX functionality stops working. Everyone is going to have to manually set up new VTX tables in Betaflight 4.1 whether the SA / Tramp was working on a previous version of Betaflight or not.

It's a shame JB took down the video because at least it showed you how to go about creating those VTX tables in Betaflight Configurator which isn't a particularly intuitive procedure if you don't know what you're doing, or if the manufacturer of your VTX hasn't provided a pre-defined set of VTX tables for your particular VTX.

Hopefully JB will re-do the video without making any of the controversial comments he did which probably contributed to the reason why the original one was taken down.

I like the fact that you can customize the bands and channels you want active but I agree, it wasn't broken and didn't need fiddling.
I too don't know how to specify the power levels and couldn't find any info on that so far...

Thanks. I've got a copy of his original video so it will be interesting to see what changed or what got taken out of the original one.

I've now added a link for this re-uploaded video to the first post.

Pretty much the stuff from UAV Tech on how to find your Smart Audio version. The rant is still intact ;-)

The ground is for dead people.
