Mounting those tiny ELRS antennas on larger quads
#1
Ahoy guys, just a quick question.

I'm making the jump on ELRS as the control link on a larger quad.

At the moment they have all been crossfire running on a QX7 but with my new TX being this: Tongue

I'm now rocking an xlite pro with HM ELRS PRO nano module TX.  Cool This TX is a thumber's wet dream, lol..

I trust this TX more than my jumper t-lite and its crappy battery bay.

So I'm in the midst of rebuilding my badger 6" frame due to a nasty crash.   Gumtree 1, badger 0 Sad

I'm wondering where to mount these pissy little 2.4GHz antennas.   I'd thought I would go with an arm mount, staying away from the VTX components.   These antennas a no immortal-T's like crossfire, they are VERY much mortal... (see what I did there? lol...)

Here's where I'm going with the placement for now:

Two zipties for rigidity and I will most likely heatshrink the dipoles with a piece of plastic as a splint/brace for strength.   Already though I don't like it....

What's everyone's thoughts on mounting a ELRS 2.4GHz antenna on a large(ish) quad like this 6" badger frame by armattan?

Cheers,

ph2t.

My preference would be to design a 3D printed mount and mount it off the back. If you're worried about the frame blocking the antenna elements then mount it at an angle so the antenna clears the frame / LiPo. I've also seen a few people cable tie them to the VTX antenna like the following which apparently works fine without any signal interference issues from the VTX antenna or vice versa.

Thanks Snow. Unfortunately I don't have access to a 3d printer anymore, I changed jobs last year. I didn't realise that ELRS doesn't interfere with video, I thought all control links that have telemetry would cause some interference (ala crossfire).

Telemetry links do not cause issues on all setups. 5 out of 6 quads I currently have do seem to be affected by the telemetry issue. The only odd one that does only does it on a mini immortal-T.

Try placing the antenna close to the VTX antenna and see if you get interference else mount it elsewhere.

Actually on the Armattan Badger I thought we can mount it below the camera cage with zip ties but aluminium is more conductive than carbon and you better test it first.

I have a crappy roll of black TPU left but works well enough for simple mount designs on my Ender 5 bowden setup. If you have a design you like on thingiverse then I am happy to print a mount and post it to you.

Thank you Kafie, that is very generous mate! I will hopefully test today, bloody crappy weather....

The wet weather over SA has not been any better. Miserable to go out and fly.

Below is a link to the thread on Facebook where the photo in my previous post came from. If you read through the comments you can see the poster stating he/she has no interference issues with it mounted like that. There have been other similar posts in the past showing the same mounting technique but once a week has passed there is virtually no chance of finding them again in the crappy FB interface.

Congratulations on the job change (assuming it was by choice). Now you have an excuse to get your very own 3D printer Big Grin

I have my ELRS antenna mounted like shown in the picture above.  So far with about 30-40 flights under my belt there has been no issues with interference.
