I wanted to classify them as freestyle, racing, ... long range? That's when it dawned on me that this term has stuck for 4 inch lightweight builds because, well, there was no other term. It's like back when we went from quads that could barely fly to those that could actually be nimble enough to weave around trees and go through cracks ("gaps" wasn't even a thing then). But what do we call these things? Well, we flew "in proximity" to things ... so we called it "proximity" lol. It wasn't until well into Cleanflight and these crazy good tunes that people started pushing well beyond hitting gaps and performing very technical maneuvers ... often times not in proximity to things ... what we call that? Freestyle. So it occured to me this class of FPV really needs its own name. It's really akin to still referring to today's freestyle as yesterday's proximity. At least for my own purposes, I'm calling it "Endurance." Freestyle, Endurance, Racing, Long Range, Cine are the general classes of FPV drones I'm going with. Like flying 8 kilometers of laps in the yard. While the overall distance traveled is long, it is all accomplished in about a 250 meter circle. Not really long range, just long overall distance traveled. SoCal Kaity :D OMG, no one told me it would be this much fun! I def think doing laps would count as endurance. Shoot man I think we just started a trend. We need a secret handshake. Who's making the t-shirts? In my mind Endurance is indicative of time while Lang Range is indicative of distance. So endurance fits perfect for those flying laps because ultimately you are measuring how long (time) you can fly and the distance (laps) is a by-product. On the other hand while flying Long Range you're ultimately measuring how far away (distance) you can fly, regardless of whether you take 30 minutes or 3 minutes to do it. The time it takes to do it is a by-product. So in my mind they are two distinctly different things. And these two things come together as a single goal is when you group them with weight and they become the "challenge". Then you have three different goals merging into one objective. Any direction. Sum of horizontal movement Endurance Time.. in this case flying. case1. only great range. 900Mhz CF whoop. You could still fly it 5km away. But 2min battery, so low distance and endurance. case2. only great distance. 5" 6S on FlSky. Flying fast, following it on highway in car with big tailwind. You covered 10km. Great Distance. case3. only great endurance DJI drone. You broke the antennna. You cant fly far. You cant fly fast.. so you hover for 40min. • Posts: 288 Threads: 56 Likes Received: 47 in 43 posts Likes Given: 13 Joined: Sep 2020 Reputation: 2 (07-Mar-2021, 11:50 PM)the.ronin Wrote: I didn't even think of that Katy. I’ll buy one or two of them Posts: 277 Threads: 54 Likes Received: 54 in 48 posts Likes Given: 10 Joined: Mar 2020 Reputation: 3 I am relatively new to FPV. In meeting random people that don't fly, it can take a lot of explaination to cover the different niches of drones. Tiny whoops, cinewhoops, toothpicks, 1s, 2s, 6s parallel. Cruising, Freestyle, Bando. Mr.Steele vs Bubby style. Build or buy. AIO, VTX, CRSF? Long range is also hard to describe. Long -distance- can be relative to the size i.e. nano long range vs 7" 6s parallel li-ion with a ground station. My interpretation of long range is how far can you go without losing signal, barely, and just enough battery to get home, or, ok, 2.85v...Wings obviously have the advantage, so..not the same class. So, subcategories of battery size to distance away? Or distance .. traveled? Power to weight to distance ratio? This could get complicated. Either way, it's all fun! Do we really need to label it? Too many labels already lol • Posts: 5,966 Threads: 47 Likes Received: 2,798 in 2,259 posts Likes Given: 7,776 Joined: Jul 2019 Reputation: 97 Consider this: FPV is just flying a drone {specifically a quadcopter} from the pilots seat; you see what the drone sees, period. Just one explanation. So, drones have Racing, Freestyle, Long Range...everything else is just flying for fun. Racing and Freestyle actually have competitions so they need to be classified. Kind of like auto racing; dragster, stock car, championship, CanAm (I think that is what they call it). Each style race has cars tailored to meet specific needs. All the rest of the stuff is just components and could apply to any and all categories. • Posts: 4,731 Threads: 392 Likes Received: 3,231 in 1,827 posts Likes Given: 3,214 Joined: Apr 2019 Reputation: 101 (11-Mar-2021, 04:27 AM)luispequeno Wrote: So are we really making t-shirts?
