fly in summer
#1
Hey Folks

Our country is hot and may reach 50 degrees Celsius

What tips do you give us about flying in the summer?

Fly in the evenings and early morning. Avoid the middle of the day. TBH, hot lipos isn't such a big thing. They work better when warmed up, so wouldn't worry too much about that aspect. Give your quad time to cool down between packs.

The only thing that the high summer temperatures and hot sun effects is ME.
I have never had any issues flying in temps over 100 with the quad itself.
Me, on the other hand, do not take it as well as I once did. Now, it is ME
that overheats, not the quad.

… get a cheap straw hat that u can cut holes for antennas… lots of bug repellent (or net on hat).. sun screen, water, keep ur lipos out of the sun if possible..
And yes . Try to avoid mid day flights.. just because of the direct temp.. I think I’ve crashed / damaged more quads from sand gnats biting me or crawling into my ears rather than “heat”… would be great to have a “pause” button… hit it, kill the bug… return to flying..

Citronella spray can be found in many shops in the world. Works well if you can't tolerate DEET. Safe to spray on clothing. If you are setting up at a bando, you could light a mosquito coil or citronella candle if it's really bad.

Rob is right about flying insects, the number of times i've been flying and had to adjust to a hover or perch or land so I could swat something near my face. Wasps are the most annoying. DEET will keep them away. They also hate certain essential oils like tea tree oil.

Over here we don't generally get crazy temps in summer. Like 20-30C is becoming the norm, but 40C+ is unusual. Main thing to take with you is water and electrolyte mix of some sort (or put a pinch of salt and sugar in your water). Dehydration is bad, even more so when operating machinery.

Beyond that maybe a tent, gazebo, sun umbrella. Basically portable shade, if you are flying somewhere without any.

Check the motortemp frequently, warm lipos give more power, less cooling from warm air can bring an issue paired with better battery performance, it can come to burned windings without coution about motorheat.

Where I fly there are quite a lot of blood-sucking insects. I bought a lightweight tent with mesh, size 2.1 meters by 2.1 meters, height 1.5 meters, price $30. Inside I put a chair, a car battery to charge the batteries, and a small table. I take off and land at the threshold of the tent. Using a small cordless vacuum cleaner with a check valve, I catch the rare insects that fly inside the tent.

Do you recommend that I put the batteries in a cool box?

It wouldn’t hurt, but not required.. heat is the biggest enemy to lipos and electronics
Correction .. crashes Maybe the first, heat is a close second

Flying in summer SUCKS

They are always buzzing. Citranela doesnt work. Keep crashing and getting ...

Ofcourse, Im talking about kids running over ..
But also the bugs are super annoying. Every time out there I get 10+ mosquito bites on the one area of calf or elbow where I didnt spray DEET.

Wow 50C, I guess you must live near a desert. Probably better to fly early mornings or just before sunset.

I’ve resorted to accept the sacrifice in range and video quality… just fly from inside your car (passenger side)..

"o you recommend that I put the batteries in a cool box?"
No.
The batteries best temperature is 40degrees celsius, i recomand to preheat the batteries to 40degrees.
https://intofpv.com/t-performance-increasement-for-free

Its just a huge difference in performance between the same lipo on 15deg celsius or 40deg celsius.
The pid tune can be very wrong if used once with a warm lipo and tuned by cold temps, the more omph can give a need to tune freshly.
If your motors get very very hot, you will need to adjust, check the temp a few times after flight for caution.

Oh man, at 50 degrees you are starting to cook! Where I live 40 is about as hot as it ever gets and I'm done flying by then. I go early on hot days, I stay in the shade when flying a quad because of the goggles. When I lived in Phoenix everyone was out early and late.
I never thought about you guys having to deal with all those bugs! Yuck. Where I live now we don't get many bugs. Not the flying biting kind. Freaking lot of spiders though, you're more in danger of getting your whoop caught in a web than getting bitten.
