Flight controller started smoking
#1
Hello,

I recently turned on my home made quad and my motors were spinning for about 10 to 15 seconds and then I saw smoke comming from my FC.
This is the FC that I am using: 9g 30.5x30.5mm Omnibus F4 Flight Controller AIO OSD 5V BEC Current Sensor for RC FPV Racing Drone
After I saw the smoke comming out I turned it off as fast as possible and saw that 1 or maybe 2 components fell of the FC. If I now turn my quad on it does not smoke anymore and it works fine (so far). I haven't tried to fly with it in its state but I tought maybe someone knows if it is a problem or not and how I maybe can replace the components.

I will add some pictures from what is left of it. At the left of the picture you can see where it started smoking.

Thanks already for looking into it.

It looks like you've smoked the large shunt resistor and 3 capacitors (at the bottom of the circuit board in the image below).

The capacitors are likely to be part of a noise filtering circuit so you may get more noise in the circuit without them (you can fit an external low ESR capacitor to mitigate that noise). And the shunt resistor must still be OK if you are able to power the board from a LiPo.

You must have had a serious short somewhere to cause so much current to be drawn that it melted the solder holding those components on. You're lucky the FC is still working. The best thing to do is take your quad out for a hover test flight and see if it all seems to be OK.

And always use a smoke stopper when doing any maintenance on the bench.

A bit dangerous to use it like that, but as long as you know your new limitations it's fine!
Snow already covered all of it.

The only thing I could find after the accident was a tiny wire that is part of a bigger wire from my battery cables making a short circuit and when I fixed that it didn't smoke anymore so I think that was the problem.
Thanks for you advice!
