EV800D vs EV800DM
#1
Sad
After extensively reviewing numerous opinions and posts, I find myself still unable to reach a decisive conclusion. Regrettably, I lack access to either option for a hands-on test to formulate my own judgments. Consequently, my only recourse is to seek the insights of my esteemed colleagues here.

Many commendations for the EV800D emphasize its removable screen as a future-proof feature, potentially accommodating upgraded goggles. However, armed with a 3D printer, I discovered that transforming the EV800DM into a portable monitor, as exemplified here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5774128, renders this purported advantage less impactful.

Regarding screen size, reviews vary, with some praising the EV800D for a supposedly more immersive display, while others argue that the reduced size of the EV800DM enhances the drone piloting experience. Additionally, the option to incorporate removable magnifying lenses to amplify "immersion" adds another layer of consideration.

In terms of comfort, it appears that the consensus favors the EV800DM across multiple reviews.

I would greatly appreciate hearing your perspective to aid me in selecting my inaugural goggles.

I suggest you have a watch of the video linked to in the post below which talks about the Eachine EV800DM goggles compared to the original EV800D...

The problem with his review is that he wasn't able to focus his eyes with the EV800DM, I highly doubt I will have this problem considering I don't even wear glasses.

hello sir,

let me help your purchase decision by hearing from someone who owned both goggles at the same time. i shall let you know my personal opinion as a user instead of mentioning the feedback from YT reviewers.

first off i wanted to learn fpv in a more affordable manner via analog equipment and basing my initial purchase from reviews so i bought EV800D! calling the more immersive field (larger screen) and detachable screen as a benefit did not do me any favors at all. the fit was uncomfortable. the face plate was a rather small area that supported the weight of the goggles against my face. it was usable nonetheless BUT it crept lower on my face the longer i used it. the front biased weight of the “detachable” monitor constantly pulled on the straps which i had to adjust everytime! i also needed reading glasses which rendered the goggles useless unless i found a way of installing a magnifier inside the box.

SO i bought the EV800DM hoping the adjustable focal length could help my use case. sadly the adjustable range was short by a bit which did not provide sharp focus. BUT these goggles fit very well compared to the EV800D although it did have a smaller screen by comparison. from my perspective, i can live with either goggles having a larger or smaller screen but priority lies in comfort first. the EV800DM does have a HUGE advantage over the EV800D as it has a proprietary magnifier lens which was sold separately. i bought one and it snaps into catches in the box where it granted me usable sharp focus.

the magnifier was so good i bought another one and diy’ed a mounting bracket which i managed to install inside the EV800D’s box opening closer to my face. this custom install immediately gave it a sharper, and even larger image than the EV800DM.

both goggles served me well for an entire year learning fpv. BUT battery life was a serious issue with both especially if you wanted to fly for extended periods of time so i had to connect an external lipo when the internal pack runs low. a cable is provided for this purpose.

both goggles also had a wonky UI which was not entirely intuitive at all especially for a senior citizen like me! i stop flying for a few days and i am once again caught in a gauntlet of operating a set of buttons that did not make any sense or logical sequence at all!

i have sold both goggles after learning fpv then migrated to dji gear. BUT if i had to recommend or buy another affordable analog box goggles again then the EV800DM wins! while it had a smaller screen, i discern the image quality and color saturation was actually better than the EV800D which looked a bit pale in comparison. hence larger is not always better. it also had a superior, more comfortable fit due to the wider opening which held the goggles firmly on my face.

if you deem the detachable monitor will fit your use case then you may choose the EV800D. i never for the life of me ever thought about flying fpv using a monitor! the concept was like a video game which never appealed to me. i only bought it coz it was more affordable at the time over the EV800DM and thought the larger screen and stock focal length would meet my needs which it did not.

notice “i” kept everything in the first person perspective by using “i” as it is my very own personal opinion. BUT i glean these observations may closely match that of others. of course YMMV. cheers! HTH!

Simply impeccable. Thank you very much, without a doubt I will choose the EV800DM now.

Thank you, was a pleasure to read and incredibly helpful. As comfort is one of my main concerns I will choose the ev800dm.
