While waiting for my frames from Armattan (they haven't arrived yet - but it's a holiday here), I decided to run a couple more tests of Armattan's services. You may have noticed the price difference of the two frames in My Store in the posts above. The production cost of 190 4mm frame was almost double that of the 155 3mm frame. I was curious if the difference was mainly due to the CF thickness, or the frame size. So, I decided to submit the 155 again specifying 4mm CF, and the 190 with 3mm CF. (I used the same .dxf files, just re-naming them.) I submitted one of these on this last Sunday evening, and the other early on Monday. Both were approved this morning (Thursday - which is a holiday here). ~3 business days, not too bad. Here are the results: Here's a little summary table: So it looks like the size made a bigger difference (in this case). I don't know if their formula is based on carbon-fiber volume, but that would make sense I guess - that much of an increase in area would add to the volume more than the small increase in thickness. So, if you are trying to decide between thicknesses for your design, a bit thicker won't change things that much. (And you can add a thicker/stronger or thinner/lighter option for your potential buyers very easily.) GREAT HowTo man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i saw the same thing with the volume on my frames i wait also for them!! great idea with the sticker! I'll start with the timeline - I was going to do a fancy timeline, but my inbox tells most parts of that story. (The top item is from the experiment I mentioned in my previous post.) But that exaggerates the timeline a bit, considering that I didn't even submit my first (rejected) design until October 26. For the two frames that are sitting in front of me: - 29 Oct - Submitted
- 1 Nov - Approved and Ordered
- 15 Nov - Shipped
- 25 Nov - Received!
Less than a month from design submission - to holding my very own frames in my very own hands! (I will love them, and pet them, and hug them... *) - I am one happy camper! I am working on setting up my worktable for shooting overhead video - I want to do a proper "Unboxing Video" of the frames (don't you just hate those?), but it's the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend here and I've been pretty busy cooking and eating. If I can't get the video set up by this evening, I'll shoot some photos and post some specs here on Sunday. But they really are here.... (And yes, I've peeked inside, but I haven't unwrapped anything yet.) . Hmm...I guess it will be an "Un-enveloping Video". One note: These were sent to me via Registered Airmail - a signature was required (there was no option to choose when ordering). More very soon.... * https://www.google.com/search?q=i+will+l...him+george Posts: 2,416 Threads: 51 Likes Received: 1,861 in 1,175 posts Likes Given: 3,315 Joined: Mar 2016 Reputation: 74 Wow! Wow! Wow! I finally opened the package and all I can say is "Wow!" The quality of these frames is excellent - better than I had hoped - and I couldn't be happier!! Here is the full "UnEnveloping" video: If you are not into that, well here's a couple of photos. That wraps up this How-to. I am happy to answer any questions (or try to) that you may have about the process of using Armattan Productions' services - just post in the comments here and I will see them. I will create a new thread tracking the prototyping of these designs. Hopefully, everything will be finalized by Spring. In the meantime, thanks for reading this!! This was an EXCELLENT tutorial!! Very detailed and complete! Thanks for doing it.....I suspect I will be using it as a guide at some point. Congrats on a GREAT job! "Damn the torpedoes!!! These are Pod-only designs (working on the pods as we speak). These are intended to be a good bit lighter than other quads of similar size. Hopefully they will be strong enough given the reduced inertial mass. I think they will be - but I will only know for sure by crash-testing a bunch... Here is a sneak peak of a rough idea of the 155 with pod and 2 cameras (the "pod" shown is only the rough overall shape - the final pod will be much more sculptured. The camera angle shown is 15 degrees. It is adjustable 15-40 and both cameras move together - the top camera will be a mobius mini). (Edit: BTW, Those "hard turns" are 1.5mm radius arcs.) Does Armattan (or anyone) have a guide somewhere for complete CAD newbies? Armattan's instructions are pretty minimal. There are a few good videos on youtube (search "QCad tutorial"). QCad also has an e-book in 4 languages that looks pretty good from the preview: http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad/book/qcad...iew_en.pdf (also available in french and german, full book also available in spanish) The full e-book is around $30 and can be purchased here: https://www.ribbonsoft.com/shop/category...ategory=77 There's an outdated (2004 - but free) ebook posted here: http://www-mdp.eng.cam.ac.uk/web/CD/enga...manual.pdf One hint I will give is to start out by picking a template that's in millimeters (I think one of the youtube videos goes over that). The default (at least for me) was inches. Good luck! Posts: 1,149 Threads: 50 Likes Received: 704 in 450 posts Likes Given: 1,189 Joined: Sep 2016 Reputation: 30 I thought i'd just start something. I'm not new to modelling, but it's been more than 10 years since... This is just a first test of how to get the basic layout down. I'll remake parts of it (round off everything etc.), and hand-cut a wood prototype to figure out the rest, don't know yet where the battery will come to rest. Good to see you're getting comfortable with QCad If you didn't go with the Pro version, it's worth it (extra features may not be important to you, but it's a reasonable price and free upgrades for a year). Looking forward to seeing your finished design.
