Firsly: welcome to the site!

Secondly: your parts list is very out-dated. I'm not one to chase the latest tech for the sake of it, but especially the FC and ESCs are obsolete for a reason. For the flight controller you want something with an F4 processor that can run Betaflight, and for ESCs you want either BLHeli_S or BLHeli_32 compatible ESCs. Just making those changes will save you a tonne of grief in the long term!

The motors are underpowered. Some people run 1806 on 5" props, but they tend to be extremely light-weight setups. Consider motors in the 2206, 2207 or 2306 range.

For a receiver, I'd switch that out in favour of a FrSky XM+ or R-XSR. Smaller, lighter and more up-to-date. But it's much less important than the above.

Also, consider going straight into a 4S system. If you're worried about the extra power you can always limit the throttle.

The ground is for dead people.

Thanks for welcome Banelle!

Admittedly the build lists I have been using as a template to create my own where a few years old. I know technology in the drone world is moving quickly but I did not think these parts where obsolete. In hindsight I should have posted my list before purchasing the items but I am just too darn keen to get building!

If I continue with this build will it fly OK? Or should I cut my losses and upgrade the FC, ESC and motors?
Bearing in mind that I am new to this, it will be my first time soldering and, if I do get it flying I expect I'll crash a lot!
Is it naive of me to think I can prioritise the FC,ESC and motor upgrades as I break things and subsequently become a better pilot? What kind of headaches would I expect staying with the obsolete components?

Thank you for your reply!

What type of flying are you interested in? That will make a difference.

Have you purchased everything already? If not, we can suggest a couple changes to your list that aren't too expensive.

If you've already made the purchases then I'd tough it out. It will get you in the air!

Those parts will lose you some of the more modern conveniences, though. For example: you will have to calibrate the ESCs, which isn't necessary for digital protocols. You won't be able to run Betaflight (the most popular flight controller software) beyond version 3.2 and you'll lose dynamic filtering, which helps the quad fly nice even if the balance is off, or your props are a little beaten up.

In terms of general build tips:
  • test fit all the things! Before you solder anything, get the basics of the frame put together and place all the parts (and their cables - connectors take up space too) to work out where everything will go and if it will fit
  • do a wiring diagram before you start. Don't be afraid to post it on here and the experienced quad-squad of IntoFPV will be able to tell you whether you're about to solder your RX to the wrong UART. We've already made all the mistakes, so you don't have to!
  • don't build tired! I know I rush to finish things late at night, but it always takes longer and leads to dumb mistakes. I fried a flight controller at midnight once before I wasn't paying attention
  • get a smoke-stopper, and use it!
That should be enough to be getting on with ;-)

The ground is for dead people.

I agree that your list is very outdated. I would go look at Rotor Builds for build components ideas.

https://rotorbuilds.com/

Oscar Liang is also a good source.

And Joshua Bardwell FPV know it all ultimate shopping list. This is very updated.

Banelle hit it on the head Wink Some parts are dated and motors small, but it will get you to the skies. Voodoos recommendations are spot on as well.

Let us know when you're flyin' Wink

Even if it's dated, you're learning and like you said, will be crashing (fyi, it doesn't ever really stop Tongue
So just fly it 'till she breaks then put in updated parts as the budget allows.

Thank you for all the great tips!
I have already brought my list so I guess I'll tough it out for now. Good to know what challenges I'll face and what parts I'll need to upgrade. No doubt it won't be long before I'm hungry for new tech.

It's awesome to know there is such a supportive community here.
Will keep you updated with my progress!
