5" freestyle, Rooster vs Remix?
#1
Hey all,

I've been having fun with my 2.5", but i think i want to try something with more heft and grunt. I feel like the 2.5" gets blown around a lot. While i aspire to race some day, i think i have a few years or ten before i'm ready for that. In the mean time i'm thinking a good "workhorse" type 5" makes sense. Solid, durable, predictable, not insane, not slow, etc.

I was looking at the Rooster which looks great. I'm not sure what the impact of the compressed X frame is in terms of tuning, behavior, etc.

I'm also looking at the Ummagawd Remix. It looks tough and i like the design.

What are your thoughts?

I have the Rooster, but I looks into the Ummagawd also. The Ummagawd is a much more difficult build. Mounting the FC upside down. Everything caged up. I think he recommended remapping motors.

Rooster, four screws and the top plate is off and you have access to everything. For the same cost, Rooster is lifetime warranty. I just buy a couple of extra arms at only $5 a piece to get back into flying while I wait for the warranty parts to get here.

I have rooster and I love it. Its durable, kinda heavy. But itis great agile tank for freestyle.
Ummagwads frame is nice, but I preffer titanium camera cage on the rooster and overall. Rosster seem to be more durable. But both frames are amazing Smile

Hi txbdan! A bit of bias on my part but the rooster is an exceptional frame, very durable, has a warranty, and fly’s well. Some slight limitations with stack height when using a 4-in-1 esc, and the camera angle is locked at 35 degrees at its lowest point with the support bar/standoff. However if you ditch the support bar you can set any angle you like (this is what I’ve done with out issue so far). The titanium cage is a tank and has yet to show a scratch. As mentioned above with this frame and some spare arms you will not go wrong!

Rooster sounds great, especially the warranty, but i went with the Remix! hah

I think the more complicated build looked fun. Really, the Ummagawd overview video was a pretty great sales pitch. Lots of interesting features and thoughts on its design. Having the guts below the arms and the battery above makes sense to me in terms of keeping the CG centered. I liked how you can "open the door" to access the guts as well. And I liked that its a traditional X design.

I'll start a new build thread once i have a chance to start thinking about parts.

I guess you already made up your mind. One last thing about the Ummagawd. Having the battery at the same level as the props means you will have a lot of lipo puncture. Any crash the displaced the lipo will damage the lipo pack.

Hahah nice voodoo! Rolleyes

In all fairness my concern too, the design philosophy is interesting but that’s with the assumption that the battery “belongs on top”.  Or there’s the bottom mounted options that avert above and maintain COG.  My issue with both designs is the less stable base to land and launch from.

That’s just my take and it doesn’t matter.  Hope you enjoy it!  It does look awesome Big Grin

FWIW, I got mine to 15-20 degrees and kept the bar.

It just depends on how large you lens is.

Hrm, that's a pretty good point. Also the point about the base being less stable than if the arms were on bottom.

Yeh, i ordered it before i saw the rest of you all's replies. I still think it'll be good, we shall see.

Hmmm interesting, I’ve not been able to achieve that!  For 25 degrees I need the bar removed as the lens hits the bar otherwise.  Dodgy

I assume you used the offset mount instead of the center mounting point on the camera which would provide that degree of angle but would require the camera to flip the image?

Either way don’t fret txbdan, it’s a great thoughtful frame with some attractive features.

Here we go again MarkII...hijacking a thread Big Grin

I have the Eagle 2 cam.  I just used the bottom screw holes on the body of the cam into the top holes on the Rooster frame.  I have no adjustment, it's fixed, but it gives me more of the view I want for landing.  The cam holds it's position with just screw tension.  I did plan to use some thin rubber sheeting between the frame and cam body for additional stiction, but it doesn't need it.

Lol, we did it again!

Ahhh yes, that makes sense. Might have to look into that. No issues with the lens extending beyond the brace? or the frame in view while flying?

No frame in view. The leading edge of the lens sits on the inside third of the cross brace....if that makes sense....I can post some pics if you like when I get a chance. It works well. Just need to figure out how to mount the HD cam at the same angle.... My video that is titled "picking up the pace" is with this setup so you can see there is no crossbar. You can see some prop action though.
